When pop rocked Slane

Rock hasn't always ruled the roost; pop has reigned, too, says Ed Power

By Ed Power

Friday May 27 2011

The previous occasion was 1999 when Robbie Williams, then in his pre-UFO obsessed pomp, silenced all those who questioned whether a mere pop act could fill the boots of U2, REM, Thin Lizzy, etc.

A super-sized personality with songs that go down as easy as ice-cream floats on a summer afternoon, he turned out to be the perfect Slane headliner.

Crucially, Williams recognised the importance of not taking himself too seriously -- and the last concert of the decade was a breezy affair, without the histrionics that often attend arena shows.

It helped that the bill was arguably the most eclectic in Slane's history, with pre-fame David Gray playing alongside goth-popsters Placebo and charmingly lovable lairy Mancs Happy Mondays.

Slane was always a big draw, had some brilliant line ups there back in the day & no health & safety back then

Gawd knows when we will see live gigs again, not in the near future I'm guessing, has to v=be very hard on musicians & others who depend on touring for a living
not before 2021 and if corona continues even longer. I am wondering if these bad times for live events will bring out something new. Humans are inventive and hundreds of thousands musicians need to live

This was posted on RW.Com and I thought I would share it here.

This was the Robbie that caught my eye and kept me interested. And my goodness - how    was he in 2003?

It was before family life and he wasn't always happy back then - but from a fans point of view - I miss this version a little bit.

regarding the 60 minutes clip. I watched it and this cheekiness is unbeatable. He was handsome, sexy, smart and challenging devil all in one. I did not know about 2003 Robbie as I became a fan only end 2006. but the time between Slane and 2006 was special with 2003 the cream. I wonder when Rob did Rudebox which I like, but was a challenge to his fans and wanted to resign after what was considered a failure and he had known that he would never really come back and that times change and new Rob's would come (in another way as today's stars are all very PC) and that social media would ask for other kind of stars to be at the top, if he would have acted like he acted. When he will be at one point of time go back on tour he needs to adapt his act to the PC rules. And this will be the challenge as being not PC is what is part of his aura. I think that this is his hugest challenge for the future: He does not appeal to most of the younger people because he is everything they learned is not fitting the model popstar and rolemodel. He does not fit his old fanbase and the 30/40/50 something ladies like in the past anymore either. I one read that part of his success is that he is everything these ladies does not have at home. Now he lost this sexual cheekiness at least with wife and 4 kids so his old fanbase and casual admirer is also not that much in him anymore. At least not in a way which grants him superstardom. I would not like to have Rob as what was already labeled on him several time: The new Cliff Richard.

I think any artist can only be themselves elisabeth.

Anything other than that just isn't authentic.

He's a chameleon - he can fit in anywhere in any kind of company or situation from the most working class setting to a Royal wedding. But he's also a decent, talented, kind man who works hard for his family and has a big heart.

He can only be himself and people decide whether they follow him or they don't.

The day he changes to try to fit in with the beige landscape of the modern PC world - is the day I'm off.

Robbie does his thing his way, that's why I like him . I always said he was a leader, not a follower.
