I always took it that he meant that when you take drugs they make you braver and "you can be anyone you want to be".

 

I think he's saying that while he was doing drugs - he lost Faith, that he didn't believe - like a lapsed Catholic

he turned against religion

 

 

He's saying I think that with drugs he found that he didn't need to believe in anything else .

 

I wonder how he feels about it today

If 'drug' as medical term than yes, it's scientific.

But if 'drug' like a narcotic... not sure but maybe too if we remember Mr White :))

 

Anyway, sometimes translation of his songs is really difficult task and I would like to be a native to understand its meaning better.
