#005 Indian Wells “Cascades” Debut: 9th July 2017 / CR: 49-35-23-14-07-03-01-01-01-02-02-05-08-11-15-20-27-35-41-46 (20 weeks)

Ah yes, my failed return to BJSC in the summer - well “Cascades” is the highest placed dance track in this year’s Top 100 and WHAT A TRACK. Many thanks to Tom Ravenscroft (son of John Peel) for introducing this to me on his 6Music recommends show, when I first heard it I was a little underwhelmed but it grew on me massively through the summer - enough to crack the Top 10 and spent three weeks at number one. Indian Wells is the pseudonym of Italian music producer Pietro Iannuzzi, and the slow build of “Cascades” - which peaks at the halfway mark as this synth line drives along the amazing bassline and dreamy melody - was the lead single from his new album Where The World Ends.

#004 Danny Brown “Ain't It Funny” Debut: 2nd April 2017 / CR: 50-36-26-17-12-07-04-01-01-01-02-03-04-06-08-13-20-28-38-45 (20 weeks)

Whether its the quite literally batshit crazy horns on this track, or the fast-paced lyrically dexterity of Danny Brown I can't even begin to explain to you how much I love this track, if only more urban songs had this kind of fun energy and exciting sound to them. The song is announced by the aforementioned brass section with Danny soon following atop some militaristic drum beat trying, and succeeding, in annihilating the insane beat that rolls throughout the track.

#003 The War on Drugs “Thinking of a Place” Debut: 14th May 2017 / CR: 40-32-24-15-05-02-01-01-01-01-02-04-06-09-16-22-26-33-39-44-49 (21 weeks)

When I compiled the chart this morning I thought that this would be comfortably the number 1 of the year, but in the end it is a fair bit behind the Top 2 - which were also far apart from each other in points - “Thinking of a Place” is an 11 minute rock epic that is in reality several songs in one. This was my song of the summer (as you can see by its mammoth chart run) but in the end there were two songs that beat it out to define my 2017.

#002 Young Fathers ft. Leith Congregational Choir “Only God Knows” Debut: 29th January 2017 / CR: 33-16-09-04-02-01-01-01-01-02-04-05-07-10-16-22-26-32-38-44-48 (21 weeks)

From the first time that I heard 2014 single “Get Up” I was instantly hooked and captivated by this Edinburgh trio - Young Knives have a very unique and special sound and they continued to impress in 2017 with this, the energetic lifeblood of last years T2 - Danny Boyle said of it that whilst Underworld’s “Born Slippy” provided the backdrop to the first film, the gospel choir-led rapturous procession of “Only God Knows” really sets the tone of the new film. The movement between Gospel, Indie/Pop and Hip-hop make the track and engaging and rewarding listen with backing vocals of Leith Congregational Choir only heightening the cathartic chaos running through the track. I am really looking forward to seeing what they have to offer in 2018.

It looks like this would have easily ended the year as the number 1 had it not been for some pesky southerners...

#001 The Horrors “Something To Remember Me By” Debut: 27th August 2017 / CR: 40-22-11-05-01-01-01-01-01-01-01-02-02-03-05-06-07-09-09† (19 weeks.. so far)

Yes, it was Southend-On-Sea’s The Horrors who snuck through to grab the coveted year-end #1 with “Something To Remember Me By”. I think it was on SevenSeize’s chart that I first heard the track (on his - coming soon section) and it was pretty much an instant hit (though it did still take 5 weeks to get to #1).. spending an incredible seven weeks at number 1 through the autumn. It is quite incredible to think about the journey that this band have made, from their beginnings during the dying moments of the ‘landfill indie’ craze of 2006/7 and then that incredible follow-up Primary Colours. Skying in 2011 provided their last #1 on my chart, the anthemic “Still Life” but on their fifth album V they were not afraid to drop the guitars in favour of more synths and electronic influences, and on no track did that pay off more than album closer “Something To Remember Me By”. A synthesised melancholic masterpiece with frontman Badwan’s vocals melting into the rich melody. It has spent an incredible 16 weeks in the Top 10 so far and I still can't get enough of it.. the question is, will I ever let it drop out of my Top 10 ... ?

A full countdown re-cap will follow later. Thanks for reading, if indeed you still are!

I really should know more of these songs since they're from artists I do quite like  Glad tonite made the Top 30 though, not the sort of music I usually listen to but the lyrics in it are amazing. Say Something Loving was a great follow-up single also, deserved to get a bit higher in the charts I think :(

Magnificent is another great one, as is that Superorganism track (if it is indeed the song I think it is :P )

Yeah “Say Something Loving” only got to #60 or so didn't it? Not that it surprises me because they are more of an album artist- I think the only Top 40 singles that made my list are “Green Light”, “On My Mind” .. I think that is sadly it, though “Love” only missed out by 1 place (peaked at 41) and “Everything Now” was comfortably a Top 40 sales hit.

Anyway, here is the full list.
