November 24, 20186 yr Watching the 9/11 edition with The Communards first totp performance of DLMTW
November 24, 20186 yr That was folllowed by holiday rap lol. A lot of quality though thereafter with Frankie returning with a bit of a flop after the first album! And Bon Jovi and Farley Funk with something revolutionary for 1986 with house making its first appearance in the U.K. Mainstream - first of many hits right up to today's chart! November 24, 20186 yr Watching the 9/11 edition with The Communards first totp performance of DLMTW  Great fun yes, definitely needed after the overload of ballads that has been mentioned  . Didn't know it was a cover until quite recently, same with Yazz's 'The Only Way Is Up'. Farley Funk with something revolutionary for 1986 with house making its first appearance in the U.K. Mainstream - first of many hits right up to today's chart! The next house hit is Mel and Kim's 'Showing Out' at the end of 1986 (Stock, Aitken and Waterman decided a house track would go with their personalities), and then at the start of 1987, Steve Silk Hurley's 'Jack Your Body', probably the most unlikely and unpoppy #1 hit since Paul Hardcastle's 19.
November 24, 20186 yr Looking forward to it! Yep but unfortunately despite the first few house hits appearing in the chart in late 1986/early 1987 along with other dancey stuff like The Communards' DLMTW and Man 2 Man it wouldn't be until the start of 1988 that dance music would really start getting going as a chart force. November 25, 20186 yr The number one wasn’t great, but it was better than the dirge it replaced. Certainly some of the recent episodes have been a bit of an endurance test. The Communards record was the biggest seller of 1986 with 745k sales :o
November 25, 20186 yr Author The Communards record was the biggest seller of 1986 with 745k sales :o I wasn't referring to the Communards record. I love their version of DLMTY.
November 26, 20186 yr Which one do you mean then? Looking at the list of top 10 singles of 1986 now and I assume he was referring to 'Lady in Red', the number 1 before Boris Gardiner. Although to be fair, 'Lady In Red' kept the first song in what would be a trend for cheesy dance-pop in the late 80s: 'So Macho', off the top spot, and 'Lady In Red' is definitely a better song than that I think (although 'Cruising', the other side of the 'So Macho' single is a good tune I think.

November 28, 20186 yr Sales for the last top 10 1- TRUE BLUE- Madonna (84,000) 2- RAIN OR SHINE- Five Star (83,000) 3- DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY- The Communards (68,000) 4- EVERY LOSER WINS- Nick Berry (63,000) 5- YOU CAN CALL ME AL- Paul Simon (44,000) 6- WORD UP- Cameo (42,000) 7- THORN IN MY SIDE- Eurythmics (40,000) 8- I’VE BEEN LOSING YOU- A-Ha (36,000) 9- IN THE ARMY NOW- Status Quo (32,000) 10- SUBURBIA- Pet Shop Boys (28,000) Five Star may rue the day they booked a tour over this period as “Rain Or Shine” led the way through the week and even into Saturday the track looked like it could make the top, but it ends just over 600 short of “True Blue” in what amounted to the closest chart race of the year. Both tracks got video promotion on TOTP but a live performance by the Essex fivesome may very well have made the difference…….
November 28, 20186 yr Cool, thanks for the sales Gezza! Nice to see quality won out in the battle for no1!
November 29, 20186 yr Author Haha needless to say SH isn't enjoying totp 1986!! There have been better years
November 29, 20186 yr Haha needless to say SH isn't enjoying totp 1986!! Nor is Tedward apparently! 1987 is a bit better overall I think, there are quite a few classics from that year. Sales for the last top 10 1- TRUE BLUE- Madonna (84,000) 2 - RAIN OR SHINE- Five Star (83,000) This song is a bit boring and not that great imo compared to her previous single 'Papa Don't Preach' :( And listening to that Five Star song it sounds over-cutesy and cheesy and I am not a big fan of it :(
November 29, 20186 yr 1987 in comparison is so much better than 86- SAW domination is starting to creep in but it's tolerable, and there's a fair few personal favourites of mine in that year. Tonight's looks pretty mediocre besides Pet Shop Boys and maybe Paul Hardcastle
