  • So many songs I like from from 1985 just from looking at the top 10 singles of the year. Tarzan Boy is probably my favourite of the top 10 hits from the year!

Probably the multiple episodes a night they're showing rather than once a week. The U brand is all BBC owned anyway

Not that I've seen. It's also on at 9am too but it's the same episodes each day. 1999 is due to start imminently

Last night's was better but not by much. Only really one quality song (True Colours) but everything else was at least average, besides Every Loser Wins of course. How did people let that get to #1 for a few weeks, let alone at all? Terrible terrible singer

It only got to to number 1 because it was featured on Eastenders which was much more popular in 1986 than it is now. Nick Berry's character Simon Wicks sang it on the piano in the Queen Vic. I think it was part of a storyline involving Michelle Fowler and Lofty.
Doesn't excuse his horrendous singing though, did anyone know what decent vocals were back then

Just found out Nick Berry is the same person who sings the Heartbeat theme tune (and his cover of Heartbeat made #2 in 1992). His vocal is very good in that one I think (not as good as Buddy Holly's in his original though)!

A great comeback from Paul Simon after a long period with little success.

Yes reminds me of my dad listening to it when I was younger!!
No, I was referring to Boris Gardiner. Lady In Red was the dirge it replaced.

Now it is Christmas I am reminded of how vastly better 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' is to 'Lady In Red'! It's like a completely different artist!

A Spaceman... has suffered the stigma of being by Chris de Burgh ever since Lady In Red came out. It made it very hard to be open about liking the song. That just made me hate LIR even more at the time.

I take it the 39 peak for A Spaceman Came Travelling was simply on the back of the success of Lady In Red and we don't have a totp performance in the coming two weeks to look forward to?

It was. It had been released a few years earlier without success. I suppose the one advantage of LIR’s existence was that it gave me a chance to buy Spaceman. I can’t remember whether it was on TOTP. It’s been on TOTP2, hasn’t it?
