March 30, 20187 yr Money For Nothing is very good, that shameless promo of MTV in the song though! . Into The Groove is one of Madonna's best songs, I especially like the buildup to the chorus. Say I'm Your Number 1 was Stock Aitken Waterman produced apparently and is much different to the kind of production they used for Dead or Alive! Nice track though!
March 31, 20187 yr Top 10 rundown, and it's Madonna on top with Into The Groove - amazing to think that this Summer of 85 dance anthem was never a single in the USA. I most remember the video for Madge drying her armpits Desperately Seeking Susan - who hasn't done that at work...? Just me then? Double Madonna as the top 10 debut hit from 1984 Holiday plays us out - much more of anthem live than Into The Groove, as I can brag I've seen her do it in the 80's the 90's and the 00's, and always a great inventive show. So Into The Groove was seen as dance back then, interesting to see how the boundaries between dance and pop were blurred, much like has happened recently in the charts with tracks like "The Middle". I don't like Holiday much at all :( Into The Groove and Crazy For You are much better imo.
March 31, 20187 yr BTW, I saw The Pretenders at Poole Arts Centre in around 1980 or '81. Was that the one where the Lights went out and she did a song by torchlight?
March 31, 20187 yr A few episodes seem to have been cut before the last episode, so unfortunately the quirky Living On Video by Trans X fell victim to the cut episodes. :( Just listened to the Go West song and it sounds to me rather like a boyband song song from the 90s, so perhaps it was ahead of its time  Edited March 31, 20187 yr by Queef's Throne

There was only one missing since last Friday's - a Mike Smith one.
March 31, 20187 yr There was only one missing since last Friday's - a Mike Smith one. Well then there must have been a few missing from just before that then (As 'Frankie' by Sister Sledge was only at #1 for 1 week on the played rerun episodes iirc). Must Be an Angel, one of THE songs of the 80s!!! And of course, in just less than 10 years, the iconic singer for the Eurythmics would have one of THE songs of the 90s imo (although it was apparently a cover of a 1986 song I found out recently :o ). Yes, I loved that original version of No More I Love You's - I think they toured with Eurythmics at the time...
April 1, 20187 yr Frankie now looks very outdated. A bit weird now. I think 'Frankie' by Sister Sledge might have been aimed at the kids/teenage market, considering its cutesy bubblegum pop sound and considering some of the lyrics 'You were 15, I was 12', which maybe helped it be #1 for 4 weeks. Just realized Opus must have been on the cut episodes too :( Love that song 'Life Is Life', very different! Edited April 1, 20187 yr by Dancing Queef
April 2, 20187 yr Anyone remember why the Beatles hit the top 10 with rerelease in late 1982? 20th anniversary reissue campaign of all their singles one by one as the original release dates came up
April 2, 20187 yr Anyone remember why the Beatles hit the top 10 with rerelease in late 1982? Weird the number of rereleases in the 80s and 90s! For example, just noticed recently that Thomas Dolby's Hyperactive from 1984 (which wasn't even a massive hit originally (#17) ) recharted at #23 in 1994! Thought initially it must have been a 90s house/eurodance remix (which would have worked well imo because the high tempo of that song) but apparently it wasn't. April 2, 20187 yr Yeh was thinking it may be because of release via cd etc - but as you say there were loads. The Animals House of the Rising Son was in the top 30 too. Then Reel Petite, Stand By Me and The Clashs big 80s hits got rereleases due to tv ad use although we all knew they were too good not to be top 10s just at the time The Clash refused to promote on totp!
April 2, 20187 yr Author Re-releases were common before downloads. They gave new people the opportunity to buy singles that hadn't been obtainable for a while. That meant that some songs such as A Whiter Shade Of Pale and Free's Alright Now were a hit several times within a decade or so.
April 2, 20187 yr Sister sledge & frankie goes to hollywood both had the most re-releases due to remixes

Of course arguably the most successful one (due to an advert) was Young At Heart by the Bluebells in 1993. I wonder why they didn't follow up with another single after that re-release went #1 for 4 weeks, the Bluebells still sounded relevant enough for the early 90s indie scene! Big missed opportunity! April 3, 20187 yr And did radio play the rereleases? I assume they did! I know Young At Heart continued to be frequently played by my local radio station in NI in the mid 90s/late 90s. Probably because of the popularity of country/folk type music there! It is one of the tracks I remember most from my childhood as a result.
