people want the next James Bond to be a female?!? Now that's ridiculous. Do people want Sherlock Holmes to be female too?

As usual, anime has already answered that question for you. And besides, Lucy Liu plays the Watson character in the American version of Holmes, Elementary.

As to the casting of Jodie Whitticker, and by extension, a woman, in the role of The Doctor, my first gut reaction, the same as a lot of people, is immediate rejection, after all up until this point The Doctor's been a man, so why change it now.

Then I rolled back a second, remembered that Doctor Who is a fictitious character, and remembered that there's more important things to get worked up about. So I'm going to give her a chance, actually watch what she's like when she starts filming, and take it from there. Who knows, she could end up being the best Doctor ever. Or worse than Colin Baker. Or somewhere in the middle.

I imagine that following this regeneration, a lot more of the stories are going to take place in the future rather than in the past, as stories set in the past will have a completely different dynamic with a female Doctor & (presumably) male companion, given the mores of the time.

The Daily Mail lot with small minds are goin OFF ot, claiming it is a'small victory for lefties but Brexit was the real won' lmaooo

Like supporting equality is a left only idea!! Troglodytes.

Its Win Win for the Daily Fail, they get to bash a British institution AND the BBC AND the Left who had nothing to do with it (The BBC charter is not written by the left, it's written by the mates of rioght-wing politicians controlling behind the scenes).

Also, chances of a Mail reader understanding the appeal of Scifi is fairly remote. "But it's not REAL!" Just like the Mail content then...

I agree with her. It's different but people will get used to it.

I think Jodie will be okay.

I think from a writing perspective, it will be interesting and challenging to write for a female center lead, let alone a female Doctor. A lot of what has centered around the show in terms of character dynamics has been about the connection between Doctor and Companion, and we've only seen that with a male Doctor and a female companion or in the case of Amy and Rory, the two companions themselves. I definitely agree with Michael - this role reversal can open up so many new avenues in terms of storyline. Are we going to have a classic love story with the gender roles reversed? Will the dynamic focus on women empowerment? Or will we see a more unconventional relationship between Doctor and Companion?

It really depends on the writing and how production will pull this off. I think we can put some more pieces together once more cast members and other spoilers have been revealed.

This is the most publicity/most the show has been talked about since the 50th anniversary! Its all over the front pages!

I know, just what it needed!!

Success.

It is WORLDWIDE news, with even a lot of Americans getting in on it.

Not necessarily. This could be a case of short term gain but doing nothing in the long term.

I'll admit I wasn't sure whether they'd be brave enough to cast a woman in the role, but Jpdie is a fantastic choice and I came round to the idea almost immediately. There's something very likeable about her and I can imagine her being very affable and witty which would be a stark difference to Capaldi's Doctor.

I don't think that the companion should be a man just because the Doctor is now a woman. I think that sends all the wrong messages about gender. Bill and a female Doctor would work really well if they brought her back, or perhaps something more along the lines of Nardole (a male yes, but also an alien) as opposed to a regular early 20 something male in the vein of Rose, Martha, Amy etc.

But the male/female dynamic has ALWAYS been there throughout the show's 50+ history. Plus, young boys do need someone there to relate to. I strongly believe that the companion needs to be male, although there could of course be two companions.

I would be concerned that a male companion would send the wrong message i.e. the Doctor can be female but only if she has a plucky young male companion to get her out of the sticky spots.

I'm sure whatever they go for, they will write it well but I don't think a female Doctor NEEDS a male companion - at least, not whilst she still has a point to prove. (And as much as we in here will disagree, Jodie and the whole Doctor Who team have a lot to do to prove this was a good decision.)

If anytihng, I see it more like the plucky female Doctor saving the man, which'd be a nice twist on the typical scenario.

It's not like the Doctor's companions to date haven't got him out of sticky spots in the past - Donna, Martha, Rose et al have all done so in spectacular season-ending examples.

And on a wider scale, one of the key roles the companion has (in my mind) is that they help The Doctor to embrace his human side (or as human as a shape-shifting alien can get). Re-watching the first episode with Donna as a full-time companion made me realise just how much that is the case.

On a slightly related note, I'm interested to see if changing The Doctor's sex will also lead to the most radical personality change for The Doctor as well. If this is the case, and The Doctor's personality is altered to become a lot more "feminine", so to speak, then a male companion will act as a good counter-balance to these personality traits, just as the largely female companions of the past have done in the past to temper The Doctor's more aggressive tendencies.

yeah I hope it's a male companion, or at least if it's a woman she has a prominent boyfriend, as the show has always relied on having lead characters of both genders.

I knew somebody would make this point, but I think a female companion helping out a male Doctor is very different to a male companion helping out a female Doctor when you are trying to prove the point that the Doctor doesn't NEED to be a man. The Doctor as a man has no point to prove because he's always been a man, and no one has ever questioned that.

(I feel like I'm getting into some deep feminism shit here so I'ma stop.)

EITHER WAY, YAY FOR JODIE.

You know, this might be ironic coming from someone with a degree in Film Studies, but I'm starting to think attempting to over-analyse a kid's TV show about a space wizard and a magical phone box really starts to suck all the fun out of it.
