April 29, 20196 yr to me, Marina has always been a mix of good and cringe lyrics, thats nothing new, and it's kinda her appeal, comparable to Lana del Rey Edited April 29, 20196 yr by Bjork
April 29, 20196 yr Honestly, I think people are taking the lyrical "problem" too far. The lyrics on this are no worse than some of the pretentious lyrics on Froot (Savages *shudders*). Also, I doubt she literally believes all people suffering depression should just "enjoy their problems" - to me it's clearly her own personal advice to herself in dealing with her own adversities. I really don't see the need to be offended by that. Ultimately, she doesn't owe it to anyone listening to be careful of their feelings - I'm sorry, but it's not on her how people interpret her lyrics. She can only relate her own truth and experiences, not edit the meaning to be more "responsible". As for the album itself, I'm liking it more and more. Hard to say where I'd rank it amongst her others, as I like them all to varying degrees. But I feel I'll end up placing it higher than Electra Heart at the very least.
April 30, 20196 yr The album definitely has its moments but lyrically it's monstly cringeworthy. Can't believe it took her so long to come back with this stuff. "Sit back and enjoy your problems, you don't always have to solve them". B*tch, I like to face my problems, thank you very much. Such horrible advice! The message is to relax and not panic / take everything too seriously. Very rarely are our problems as serious as we think they are.
April 30, 20196 yr more than the lyrics I have an issue with Baby being included and placed in the middle of the album it would have been ok if it were a solo version but a version with Fonsi, kinda ruins the flow of the album for me, totally out of place
April 30, 20196 yr I think a lot of it has been the expectation for her to top FROOT and continue in that direction. She has the potential to really push herself and experiment. I think reactions would be different had she not sold it as a concept album and instead was more honest about it being a simple pop album with bops aplenty. It's very accessible, but also faceless. For me, she has always managed to elevate herself above on-trend production (Electra Heart) and less than stellar lyrics because each album had personality and a theme. This one struggles with personality, and a loose theme that wants to say a lot but says nothing. I completely understand those liking it though — it's an easy melodic listen and it's difficult not to enjoy her voice. Edited April 30, 20196 yr by blacksquare
April 30, 20196 yr The fear side is growing. YOU is becoming my favourite. This album is so F-ing good though The lukewarm reactions are a surprise to me! It’s the type of stuff people would stan on here or so I thought.
April 30, 20196 yr The message is to relax and not panic / take everything too seriously. Very rarely are our problems as serious as we think they are. Indeed, I think it's an important message. There may be a few choice lyrics (like the one Black Square pointed out oops) but that's not one of them. Also, the lyrics to Savages are great! A really interesting take that probably has some truth to it.
April 30, 20196 yr more than the lyrics I have an issue with Baby being included and placed in the middle of the album it would have been ok if it were a solo version but a version with Fonsi, kinda ruins the flow of the album for me, totally out of place I think it actually fits in brilliantly, way better than I'd have expected on a Marina album. Fonsi's presence is pretty minimal on the song for him to make any real impact either way. I really love the album  I hadn't peeped LOVE when that got released so I listened as a full package at the weekend and it surprised me, because I was never particularly big on FROOT. Nabbed a last minute ticket to her London show this Friday!
May 3, 20196 yr Debuts at No. 5 with 8,013 copies sold! Really incredible considering she has zero airplay and no TV promo in the UK as far as I’m aware. Although she has done quite a few interviews for online/magazines and I think a couple of radio appearances. Shows how loyal her fanbase is!
May 4, 20196 yr Do I need spoiler tags, mods? No Baby or Oh No! She did say on Q&A the other day she will add and change songs as the tour progresses.
May 4, 20196 yr Spoiler tags are good, just in case some people who haven't been yet don't want to know the setlist!! I had such a brilliant time last night, only nabbed a ticket on Tuesday but was so glad I did! The setlist was strong, -----Baby----- felt like the only surprising snub (as much as I'd have loved to hear it, I wasn't really expecting Radioactive. Ending on How to Be a Heartbreaker was such a highlight!!

May 4, 20196 yr Some good songs earlier in the album but then went a bit samey with nothing standing out.
May 6, 20196 yr This is a really great album now I've finally got round to listening. Karma seems like a good choice for a single.
May 8, 20196 yr This is a really great album now I've finally got round to listening. Karma seems like a good choice for a single. Orange Trees as a single when Karma was right there, with a similar vibe, was a choice. It's a commercial album following a Clean Bandit feature. I don't understand the single choices at all, or their lack of push.
May 10, 20196 yr It's a commercial album following a Clean Bandit feature. I don't understand the single choices at all, or their lack of push. This is what's odd for me - it's not as if we're talking about something entirely uncommercial with no potential singles that radio just won't play. Yet it seems like they've pushed nothing to radio again; I very much doubt that even Radio 2 wouldn't playlist her at least. Maybe she's just happy with having a small, but rabid, fanbase.
