The RapCaviar playlist has had its description changed to 'Rest In Peace, XXXTENTACION' and has 2 of his songs as the first 2 on the list. That's a pretty massive about turn from Spotify after banning his music from their playlists entirely just a couple of months ago.

I think we call this #Mournography.

3 lions @21!!!

Lots of xxxtentacion with Sad @20 the highest

Apeshit at 193

To be expected but ugh I can't at this sorry excuse of a human potentially/probably outpeaking Avicii's post-humous streaming numbers.

guess xxxtentacion tracks will climb even more tomorrow, this is just a few hours effect

was expecting APESHIT to have a massive impact ala This is America, rally surprised at how poorly it's done, also in US Spotify it's #140-ish or around

or maybe it just means most people use Free-spotify??? thought I read the opposite, that the majority of users were Premium?

Apparently they overturned it June 1st after the ceo of his label threatened to pull all their artists from spotify

I'd low key love it if they got rid of Spotify Free altogether - I'm sure streams would drop but the quality of the charts would improve.

APESHIT is #2 on Apple Music, so I think theres's a mistake on Spotify.

I think paid and free users listen to roughly the same things. I think for Apple Music you have to pay, and its charts are quite similar to the Spotify charts.

I've read that Spotify Premium is even more rap-dominated than Spotify Free, which may not be the improvement many people would want:

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/the_mus...t_not_last.html

What’s the intersectional angle of this inside-baseball industry story? It’s that the general public is now invested in how Billboard and Nielsen measure streaming—and what that means for the genre and even racial makeup of the charts. The subtext is that rap—and not old-school landed-gentry rap like Jay Z and Eminem but viral rap like “Bad and Boujee” and “XO Tour Llif3”—has gotten a major chart boost from the rise of streaming. In October, Billboard announced a plan to shift in 2018 how streaming services are weighted on the Hot 100 and other song charts: They’ll count ad-supported services such as YouTube and free Spotify less than paid services such as Apple Music and paid-subscriber Spotify. This is something the old guard in the business wants: for the music you monetize directly to count more than what you consume passively. And the music blogosphere lost its damn mind. Everyone from the New York Times to Thrillist to HipHopDX weighed in on the news. I’ve been following Hot 100 minutiae for three decades, including changes far more significant than this, and no rule change I can remember has generated more chatter—and the new rules haven’t even taken effect yet. Mind you, there’s not even evidence that overindexing paid streaming would hurt hip-hop: A source at Spotify told me rap dominates the paid side of the service, too, even more strongly than the ad-supported side. I will wait to comment in full for when the new rules take effect, but in the meantime we might want to decide if we are rooting for or against our new robot overlords.
Maybe it would affect playlist-heavy pop/dance songs though. I have no statistics on that either way, but it would be interesting to know.

(but I would much rather music be accessible to as many people as possible than have potentially more appealing charts.)

They literally can't. A huge percentage use the mobile app, and you can't search for and play songs. You can't skip either. The only option is to shuffle playlists.

Not sure people would be complaining about streaming or the quality of streams if rap music wasn't the main beneficiary.

but I don't even understand why there's still free spotify, should if they dropped it, most people would pay,

everybody pays for netflix and nobody is expecting a free version

That’s why Apeshit is flopping on Spotify, because like 90% of its users aren’t premium so they physically can’t listen to it. I’m certain that if either Apeshit wasn’t premium only, or if Spotify WAS premium-only, it’d be Top 10 at least

This has brought up a huge flaw in how Spotify works, and I’m quite glad it has too. They should just go Premium-only. They might lose a percentage of their users, but they’ll gain huge money in the long run as well as respect (which will probably help them actually make a profit :P)

Says who? I thought the were more premium than free-tier users

Well 90% was exaggerating but

“In January 2018, the company reported over 70 million paid subscribers worldwide. As such, subscribers account for less than half of Spotify's user base of 159 million monthly active users.”
