With the European Athletics Championships being biannually it has sort of suffered in its prestige in my view with them taking place in a Olympic year.

But it was inevitable that they'd become bianual as it gives European athletes more incentive to get some titles, especially in the events where they struggle to penetrate the domains of athletes from another continents. And yes, when they now happen in Olympic years the European Championships are looked upon more as a stepping stone rather than a final goal but with World Championships hapenning every odd-numbered years, that was the only way to go. But at least, in the non-Olympic even-numbered years, they are seen as a big thing.
