December 30, 20186 yr Author 90. Your Name Chart-Run: 90 198pts | 2016 | Toho Top 20's: Brett, Iz (#2) QYNQMeN4vO8 Into 90th we have the first Anime entry with 2016 blockbuster Your Name which received rave reviews, fab box office and an Oscar nom iirc. This scored high points from buzzjack's anime stans Brett & Iz, who in fact actually contributed all 198 points to its title making this the film to make the the top 100 with the least amount of voters! Ofc as this is a new entry, I have no commentary to copy & paste from last year so y'all have to make do with a shorter commentary x I haven't gotten around to seeing this but I really need to as I've heard so many people rave about it!
December 30, 20186 yr Author 89. Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs Chart-Run: 126-89 206pts | 2009 | DreamWorks Top 20's: none Y_nSwh2WjAM Into 89th we have another new entry but this time for a film that came out nearly 10 years ago! I actually thought this did really well last year so I was surprised to find out it wasn't even top 100 last year and more than doubled its points from the 2016 edition! This was another major hit in the franchise and did insane box office numbers worldwide iirc. Ofc as this is a new entry, I have no commentary to copy & paste from last year so y'all have to make do with a shorter commentary x I absolutely loved this and it's my 2nd, possibly even favourite Ice Age movie <3 I watched this so many times when I was younger and I adored the plot, the characters and the animation. A fab underrated great film <3
December 30, 20186 yr Author 88. Rugrats Go Wild Chart-Run: 83-88 208pts | 2003 | Nickelodeon Movies Top 20's: none Pb8FpdXuU8U Into 88th we have a 5 place faller from the 2016 edition with one of the many Rugrats movies! This actually beat its points total from last time round despite the fall. Rugrats Go Wild is a crossover film based on the Nickelodeon animated television series Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys and is the third, and so far, final film in the Rugrats trilogy and the second in the Wild Thornberrys series! The film grossed $55.4m worldwide which was the lowest grossing Rugrats film. The film used Aroma-Scope which allowed people to smell odors and aromas from the film via scratch and sniff cards (similar to the 1960s Smell-O-Vision) and Aroma-Scope was not used theatrically again for eight years, until the release of Spy Kids: All The Time In The World in 2011! Rugrats Go Wild was originally made by the television unit but after screenings, Paramount decided to shelve it and remake it into a feature film. Among the biggest hype for the movie was Bruce Willis voicing a new character and the use of the 'Odorama' cards which Burbe King and Blockbuster released the cards that filmgoers used when watching the film. However there were many complaints that the 'Odorama' cards just smelled like cardboard and nothing else. The Odoroma card was a homage to John Waters film Polyester but Waters felt he was ripped off and realised New Line Cinema didn't renew the copyright for Odorama and later said a cheque would have been an homage! The Odorama cards would later be released with the DVD release of the film and early trailers gave the film the title 'The Rugrats Meet The Wild Thornberrys'! The film has a poor 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the film underperformed at the box office, not surprising when you schedule your film two weeks after Finding Nemo was released!! Love Rugrats and this movie but this wasn't that close to making my top 100 as don't really remember it at all as haven't seen it in years! Surprised its done so well again though and its nice to see Rugrats are still popular!
December 30, 20186 yr Author 87. Home Chart-Run: 63-87 209pts | 2015 | DreamWorks Top 20's: UltraReputation (#16) iLGDJkhYnVc Into 87th and we have one of our big fallers in this section from one of the most recent Dreamworks movies, the absolutely fabulous Home <3 It follows the story of an alien named Oh (voiced by Jim Parson) on the run from his fellow Boovs who meets and befriends a young girl (voiced by Rihanna) and tries to help on her mission of being re-united with her mother. It was a fun film and fairly popular amongst people on Buzzjack upon its release, it had some great jokes and there's a recurring theme here as it had some pretty catchy tunes on the soundtrack too including Jennifer Lopez's "Feel the Light" and Rihanna's "Towards the Sun" but it didn't exactly please the critics as it stands at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. It did a pretty good job at the worldwide box office though, being the 19th highest grossing movie of 2015 with $386 million made. (commentary by Josh) Absolutely ADORE this movie so I'm gutted its fallen so much :( At least it's still top 100. I love this film so much & have seen it multiple times, I love the characters & plot, the film is beyond cute and the music slays (Towards The Sun, Feel The Light & Red Balloon are all incredible & underrated as all are amongst their respective artists best songs of the decade). A classic for me and hopefully this improves in time <3
December 30, 20186 yr Author 86. Puss In Boots Chart-Run: 117-86 211pts | 2011 | DreamWorks Top 20's: none 55gmAtakjJ4 Into 86th and we have our next debut from an older film as Puss In Boots climbs over 30 places from 2016's edition! I'm honestly shocked this didn't do better last time considering this forums' obsession with anything Shrek related. Ofc as this is a new entry, I have no commentary to copy & paste from last year so y'all have to make do with a shorter commentary x This is a really good animation but nothing groundbreaking. I really enjoyed it when I was younger but I don't remember much about it and I'd probs have it around here in my own personal ranking so wd buzzjack!
December 30, 20186 yr Author 85. Despicable Me 2 Chart-Run: 35-85 213pts | 2011 | Illumination Top 20's: UltraReputation (#17) HwXbtZXjbVE Into 85th and falling a massive 50 places, as well as losing over half of its points from last time is Despicable Me 2 :( Why did you guys do this so wrong this time around? An animated classic <3 Despicable Me 2 saw the return of Gru and the Minions, this time Gru teams up with the Anti-Villain League to discover the truth behind a stolen laboratory in the Arctic. The film saw the return of Steve Carell, Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig (although she voiced a different role this time) and made $970 million at the worldwid box office, a massive success for the studio. It spawned the spin-off, Minions, which made over a $1 billion at the worldwide box office as well as the upcoming direct sequel, Despicable Me 3. It was nominated for two Oscars (Best Animated feature film which it lost to Frozen & Best Song for Pharrell's "Happy" which it also lost to Frozen for Idina Menzel's "Let It Go"). (commentary by Josh) I utterly adore the franchise and this is probs my 2nd fave or even fave in it behind the first one! The minions are adorable as ever, the plot is great and entertaining and I had a blast watching this, such a good film <3
December 30, 20186 yr Author 84. Anastasia Chart-Run: 91-84 220pts | 1997 | 20th Century Fox Animations Top 20's: none eNj53-mu7xw Into 84th and we have Anastasia which actually climbs this year which I'm lowkey surprised at as I never ever hear anyone talk about this. The film includes voice work from the likes of Meg Ryan, John Cusack and Angela Lansbury and the younger version of the the young Anastasia was voiced by Kirsten Dunst and the actress singing for the younger version of Anastasia was Lacey Chabert from Mean Girls! The film is an adaptation of the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaeyna of Russia and despite receiving some objections from some historians to the fantastical retelling of the life of the Grand Duchess, it recorded a positive reception from critics and became a box office success! The film scored two Oscar nominations for Original Song (Journey To The Past) and Original Musical/Comedy Score and is the most profitable film from Don Bluth & Fox Animation Studios to date! The success of Anastasia has spawned many adaptations of the film from a direct-to-video spin-off, a computer game, books, toys and a stage adaptation! Fox got into battle with Disney over the marketing campaign as Disney centred a lot of animation re-releases around the same time Anastasia was being released! Yep I still have no recollection of this at all and I'm still surprised how well it does each year.
December 30, 20186 yr Author 83. Watership Down Chart-Run: 78-83 223pts | 1978 | CIC Top 20's: Iz (17th) xZcHLpjiEdw Into 83rd and we have the film adaptation of the classic novel Watership Down which tumbles 5 places this year despite an increase in points! Also it's finally someone else losing a film in their top 20 and it not being me x Watership Down is a Britssh animated/adventure/thriller/drama film based on the novel of the same name by Richard Adams and the film was an immediate success and the 6th most popular film of 1979 at the British box office! It was the first animated feature to be presented in Dolby Surround Sound and Art Garfunkel's hit single 'Bright Eyes' briefly features in the film! The film was originally going to be directed by John Hubley but he died in 1977, however his work can still be found in the film, including the 'fable' scene. Most of the predators remain mute throughout the film and the characters are given human voices and minds, paw gestures and some facial expressions for emotions and the animation backgrounds are watercolours! Most of the locations in the movie are based on diagrams and maps in Richard Adams' original novel and were based on real spots in Hampshire and surrounding areas! The film is mostly faithful to the novel but some changes were made to decrease the overly detailed complexity and improve the pace and flow of the plot! Also the order in which some events occurred was re-arranged! The film has an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the film won the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation! In 2004, Total Film named the film as the 47th greatest British film of all time and was ranked 15th in the '100 Greatest Tearjerkers'! Investors in the film reportedly received a return of 5,000% on their investment and the film underperformed at the US box office, despite its massive success at the UK box office! On release, many reviewers warned parents that the children might find the content disturbing though the film was given a U rating! However in 2012, BBFC admitted they have received complaints about the low certificate of Watership Down almost every year since 1978! Marketers in the US were also worried that the main promotional poster appeared too dark and could scare some children! After a British TV screening at Easter 2016, the film would receive a PG under current standards if it was to be re-released because of the use of an expletive and the film's violence was too strong for a U! A picture book was released with the film and a TV series with the same title was created 20 years after the film was released. The series had 39 episodes and was loosely based on the events of the film, however the storyline is more child-friendly but the 3rd season took a darker turn than the first two seasons! In 2015, BBC & Netflix announced plans for an animated television mini-series based on the novel for a 2017 release! I love this film and it still makes me emotional af whenever I see it so I'm glad it remained top 100 again! I still need to get round to watching the BBC adaptation that just premiered!
December 30, 20186 yr Author 82. Princess Mononoke Chart-Run: 125-82 225pts | 1997 | Studio Ghibli Top 20's: Iz (4th) 4OiMOHRDs14 Into 82nd and we have another climber into the top 100 this time around for the first Studio Ghibli film in this countdown! After I lost two of my top 20 in a row, Iz now also loses two of his top 20 in a row as he loses one of his top 5 films. Ofc as this is a new entry, I have no commentary to copy & paste from last year so y'all have to make do with a shorter commentary x Again I haven't seen this and really need to get round to it as I've heard so many great things about it! I'll try and watch it by next time we have this countdown x
December 30, 20186 yr Author 81. Sausage Party Chart-Run: 73-81 227pts | 2016 | Sony Top 20's: none 9VoNgLnjzVg Into 81st and we have our first adult-oriented animation in the form of 2016's raunchy comedy Sausage Party. This also increased its points total (by only 2pts tho) whilst still falling. This also relinquishes the title of the highest adult animation this year as we still have at least one to come! Sausage Party is a 2016 adult animated comedy and includes voices from the likes of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill etc and is the first CGI-animated film to ever be rated R by the MPAA! The film is a spoof of Disney/Pixar films and follows a sausage who discovers the truth about his existence! The film's rough-cut premiered at the South by Southwest festival and was a success at the box office by grossing more than $140 million! The film was originally rated NC-17 due to the visibility of a pubic hair so this has to be removed for the film to receive an R rating!! The film received a great 83% positive reviews from critics and has received some nominations for animations and the fabulous song 'The Great Beyond' from some Awards. I'm not sure it will turn up at the Oscars though due to the sheer crazy competitveness of the animation category this year! There was controversy with the animators, which led to 36 of the 83 animators to being blacklisted, due to being told they would be blacklisted if they didn't work overtime without pay. There have been rumours about a sequel and Rogen has stated he would like a sequel to be made! Ugh at this doing so well again but I honestly thought it was on the up as didn't remember it doing so well last time so hopefully it'll start falling even quicker xI still struggle to make an opinion on this, definitely one of the most WTF films I've ever witnessed. I felt like most of the film could have been a bit funnier and I don't know if that last 10 minutes is one of the biggest messes I've seen.
December 31, 20186 yr Excellent two there with Your Name and Princess Mononoke! The latter is pretty much peak Ghibli if you're looking for something a little less-child friendly, being all set in medieval Japan and with a saving the wild theme, I'd rank it as my favourite Ghibli film actually. Meanwhile Your Name is just stunning and near on everyone who has ever seen it agrees so... yeah. Great to see them both make it in. Watership Down is also excellent, adaptation of a dark classic, lovely stuff.
December 31, 20186 yr Great to see Your Name in the top 90; if this Top Animated Films list becomes a regular enterprise I can imagine it steadily climbing the rankings as more people discover its brilliance. Which reminds me, people, if you've never seen Your Name, see Your Name! I'd even send you a copy of the DVD if you promise to watch it, that's how much I loved it! Great to see Princess Mononoke on this list too, even though it's somewhere down my list of favourite Ghibli films. Definitely agree it's the least child-friendly Ghibli film, given that a scene literally shows someone getting their limbs hacked off.
January 10, 20196 yr Author 80. Kung Fu Panda Chart-Run: 39-80 230pts | 2008 | DreamWorks Top 20's: none PXi3Mv6KMzY Into 80th and we have one of DreamWorks classic animation franchises as the first entry of the Kung Fu Panda films crashes down this year after making top 40 last time we did this! Ouch. Kung Fu Panda is the first film in the Kung Fu Panda trilogy and it tells the story of Po, the panda, who aspires to be a kung fu master. He is then picked as the chosen one who is destined to defeat Tai Lung, an evil snow leopard who returns after escaping from prison. It features the voices of famous stars including Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen and Dustin Hoffman. It was a big financial success making $631.7 million worldwide and it spawned two sequels. A potential 4th film is up-in-the-air as the 3rd film made over $130 less than the previous instalment (although I imagine it still made a good profit for the studio). This is definitely my favourite Kung Fu Panda film but I think that's probably because I was only 8 years old and appreciated the juvenile humour more. In last year's Kung Fu Panda 3, I was rolling my eyes a bit at some of the jokes. The visual effects and fight scenes can be appreciated by anyone at any age though, some of the visuals are gorgeous *-* (commentary by Josh) Yep this remains beyond meh and for me is honestly the worst of the whole franchise. It irritates tf out of me so I'm glad its plummeted this year and let's hope this continues *.*
January 10, 20196 yr Author 79. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown Chart-Run: 80-79 232pts | 2006 | Blue Sky Top 20's: Dexton (#15_ M8bRIAPOVtA Into 79th and we nearly have our first non mover of the countdown as Ice Age 2 manages to climb a singular spot from 2016's cuntdown! This is the 2nd Ice Age film to appear so far. Ice Age 2 saw most of the main cast reprise their roles and the likes of Queen Latifah and Seann William Scott join the cast and the film received mixed critical reception but was a major box office success with over $660m earned at the box office! The film has 3 follow-ups so far and a video game was released for this entry of the franchise! After the first film was released in 2002, a sequel was green-lit and 2006 was reported as the planned year for the sequel's release in 2003! The film was renamed Ice Age 2: The Meltdown in June 2005 but the number 2 was removed from most countries bar the UK, Ireland, Mexico and Australia! Also most of the sponsors had the 2 in the packaging but not in the TV adds! The film has a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the short film 'No Time For Nuts' was included on the DVD release! The film was a big box office success and at the time, had the 2nd biggest opening ever for a non-summer or holiday release! It was the first film of 2006 to pass the $100m mark in America and is the 66th highest grossing film of all time and the highest grossing animated film worldwide of 2006! Marketing for the film involved an anti-cell spot, a promotion with Scrat on Family Guy and Sid hosted an entire evening on FOX by showing up in intermittent times between commercials. Scenes from the film were showed in Airhead candy commercials and one of the posters for the film was a parody of an iPod advertisement with 'iAge' replacing 'iPod' and an acorn replacing an iPod! I quite like this one but the 1st/3rd/4th are all way stronger for me (though the 5th one is a billion times worse so this is no longer my least fave in the franchise). It's definitely grown on me more throughout the years and made my list in a similar position to where it has finished here!
January 10, 20196 yr Author 78. Bambi Chart-Run: 25-78 237pts | 1942 | Disney Top 20's: Chez (#8) gSh1eLrxiqs Into 78th we have one of the oldest films in this countdown to pop up and also by far one of the biggest fallers this year as Disney classic Bambi tumbles over 60 places this year :( Bambi tells the story of a young deer growing up in the forest with his animal friends. It was nominated for three Oscars in Best Sound Recording, Best Original Score for a Comedy or Dramatic Picture and best Original Song for "Love is a Song" but didn't win any. It actually lost the Best Song award to White Christmas by Bing Crosby. This is one of my absolute favourite animated films, it is really special in my opinion so I'm pleased it's done quite well in terms of the Disney animated classics here. It features one of the greatest villains of all time (it makes mankind seem absolutely terrifying), some of the saddest scenes ever (Bambi's mother's death ) and one of the best ever scores imo (the music instils so much dread and fear in my body in the scenes where mankind are about and the wildlife is in danger). (commentary by Josh) Bambi remains an animated classic and the story/animation is incredible. I don't get how y'all turned on this so randomly and quickly??? Hopefully it'll climb big next time around
January 10, 20196 yr Author 77. Flushed Away Chart-Run: 59-77 242pts | 2006 | Aardman Top 20's: none RLJxoJM_ZbY Into 77th we have another faller for one of Aardman's best films, Flushed Away, which still remains fabulous & a great animation <3 This film follows the story of a rat that gets flushed down the toilet and ends up finding himself in the sewers of London. It also features a famous voice cast including Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen & Andy Serkis. I have seen it but don't really remember a lot as it is kind of forgettable  It was nominated for a BAFTA award for Best Animated Film and it has a score of 6.6 on IMDb as well as a score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes which is pretty solid to be fair. (commentary by Josh) I ADORE Flushed Away but tbh I'm glad enough that it makes the top 100 cos its the kind of film I could easily see missing this kinda list on Buzzjack haha. The voice cast is SO good and I loved the plot. I watched this continuously when I was younger and still love it <3
January 10, 20196 yr Author 76. Sleeping Beauty Chart-Run: 104-76 244pts | 1959 | Disney Top 20's: Alex (#2), Ready For It (#4) CfsyUyi_FJM Into 76th and the final film completing the first quarter of this countdown is another one of the older canon Disney entries here from classic Sleeping Beauty, which makes its top 100 debut after just missing out last year! Ofc as this is a new entry, I have no commentary to copy & paste from last year so y'all have to make do with a shorter commentary x Sleeping Beauty is one of the Disney films I've seen and even though the plot is generic af, it is a classic and I do love the film. Also Maleficent is iconic and is the real queen of this film, icon *.*
January 10, 20196 yr I cant remember Bambi! Sleeping Beauty is one of my least fave Disney films too. Mehhhhhh. Flushed Away can do what it's title suggests it to do. Bleurgh.
