Don't get why a lot of people are crusading for christmas songs on here. Yes they are what the public is listening to, but a good chunk of these streams likely come from people asking Alexas and Google Homes for christmas music, + shops and businesses throwing on random Spotify playlists. And if they were still on SCR, the whole Top 40 would almost certainly be full of them come December (making any discussion of the charts on here pointless), and Mariah would be a dead cert for christmas #1 every year, taking away what little interest there is in it.

So how is that different to usual, when people throw on the top 50 playlist or Hot Hits UK instead?

I think you're projecting your dislike of the Christmas song takeover onto every chart fan in your second point - plenty of people have expressed how much they love seeing it. I know I personally really enjoy seeing how all of the Christmas songs perform each year, and Mariah being #1 every year would simply reflect its huge ongoing popularity (although I'm still not convinced it would happen EVERY year - it'd depend on competition + what day of the week Christmas is).

everyone’ll talk about Mariah and Wham! next year but Leona will sweep in with that shocker number one

Omg THIS!!

Wham isn't even an xmas song and no one liked it till last year!!

Because Hot Hits has some diversity in what genre of music is on it. If Hot Hits was exclusively 1 genre I'm sure people wouldn't be happy with it either.

No one wants a chart with no diversity.

Except the two million people that had previously purchased it, you mean?

I really want Amazon’s One More Sleep version to be released on all platforms, it’s a travesty that it’s still Amazon exclusive

It'll hopefully repeak next year when it's on other platforms!

The thousands of people streaming Christmas songs on repeat clearly do.

Mariah Carey misses out and next year I have a feeling Wham could beat her to the top spot with the Last Christmas movie coming out

A movie??

I can assure you they would be horrified if they knew basically most of the official top 40 was xmas songs this week. Which is why this weeks chart has been swept under the rug.

I doubt they'd care.

I don't think they'd be horrified and they're the ones to blame as they've spent Christmas with the Spotify playlists on repeat  the chart's been swept under the rug because it's full of Christmas songs and it's broadcast on the 28th December. The public aren't interested in hearing a bunch of Christmas songs at this stage, the EOY chart is a bigger draw.

For the record, this would be today's chart without Christmas songs:

1 Ava Max Sweet But Psycho

2 Ariana Grande thank u, next

3 Halsey Without Me

4 Mark Ronson feat. Miley Cyrus Nothing Breaks Like a Heart

5 Post Malone & Swae Lee Sunflower

6 LadBaby We Built This City

7 James Arthur & Anne-Marie Rewrite the Stars

8 Pinkfong Baby Shark

9 Freya Ridings Lost Without You

10 George Ezra Shotgun

11 Kodak Black feat. Travis Scott & Offset ZEZE

12 Zara Larsson Ruin My Life

13 Jess Glynne Thursday

14 Ariana Grande imagine

15 P!nk A Million Dreams

16 Clean Bandit feat. Marina & Luis Fonsi Baby

17 George Ezra Hold My Girl

18 Post Malone Wow.

19 Keala Settle & The Greatest Showman Ensemble This Is Me

20 Ellie Goulding, Diplo & Swae Lee Close to Me

21 Little Mix feat. Nicki Minaj Woman Like Me

22 Russ splash Gun Lean

23 Meek Mill feat. Drake Going Bad

24 Khalid Better

25 James Arthur Empty Space

26 Calvin Harris & Sam Smith Promises

27 Cadet & Deno Driz Advice

28 Rita Ora Let You Love Me

29 Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper Shallow

30 Hugh Jackman, Keala Settle, Zac Efron, Zendaya & The Greatest Showman Ensemble The Greatest Show

31 Marshmello & Bastille Happier

32 Jax Jones & Years & Years Play

33 Sheck Wes Mo Bamba

I've bolded the songs that would be at new peaks, and any song that's never been top 40 before is in blue. I think it's safe to say that Russ splash and Jax Jones will be top 40 next week, perhaps Cardi depending on how she holds up. Most of the songs that would've had new peaks will probably achieve them this week instead. Is there anything particularly "interesting" there that the Christmas songs truly robbed, that we won't see fixed in next week's chart?

The EOY chart could have been today or Sunday though. Having 30+ xmas songs in a chart that is released on the 28th is a disaster. I know a few on here like it but logically it is awful. I'm not sure why that is so hard to grasp. If this weeks chart was interesting radio 1 would be all over it but a bunch of old xmas songs, that the public figure have made number 1 at some point in the past, to play on Dec 28th is a big no no.

Ellie and Zara not making top 10 at all :kink:

Poor Ava though, first she misses out of Christmas #1 and the first week she does make it to #1 no one gives a shit :(

But that's just the way it works, it's not a disaster. This is the chart that includes Christmas Day. It surely isn't difficult for the public to grasp that people streamed Christmas songs on Christmas Day? It's nothing to do with being "interesting" or "diverse", that's not why the chart exists, it's there to represent the most popular music of the moment, and whilst I agree with the ACR rules to help promote newer hits, it's silly to apply it permanently to the Christmas songs when they are *genuinely* the most popular songs of the week, and not actually robbing any songs of top 40 spots that won't be making it in January anyway. Radio 1 don't not play this particular chart because it's uninteresting, they play it because the public don't want to hear Christmas songs on the 28th. That's all there is to it!

Not at all which proves the point!

The chart will be basically like this next week with a few changes such as Ladbaby will be barely top 40, Babyshark may fall further and those NEs will be higher taking account for their rises this week and some older hits will be high enough such as Shotgun and something from NYE shows like Jools may move up further as sales will be low/close!

SO will Sweet But Psycho be counted as a 2018 hit or a 2019 hit?

I’d say it will be classed as a 2018 #1 and a 2019 hit
