Top 40 Commentary

The Christmas rush is over and we resume as normal this week, and to commemorate last year in Thermo's hot hits I am bringing back the annual #1 poll (after many years), you can choose your favourite Thermo's hot hits #1s in the past year in the poll above and let me know which was your favourite. I am also moving the commentary back to its original place ahead of the chart for now.

So, as we move into the new year we get... a return to #1 actually! Kygo jumps back to #1 with 'Happy Now' to claim his fourth week at the top, though of course this would be his seventh if Christmas songs were relegated to their own chart. One more week at the top and this would equal the number of weeks featured artist Sandro Cavazza spent at #1 on his other chart topper, 'Without You' with Avicii.

In fact the top four non-Christmas songs remain unchanged, with each climbing 50 places. Mark Ronson reaches a new peak of #2 with 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart', which matches the peak achieved by 'Uptown Funk' four years ago. He is yet to reach #1 with any song, as is Alan Walker, who this week reaches #3 with 'Different World', becoming his third top 3 single following 'Faded' and 'Sing Me To Sleep' which peaked at #2 and #3 respectively.

Although we are now three weeks into the album release, it is this week Alan's album tracks see the most impact as the Christmas tracks make way for them. In the top 40; 'Lily' enters the chart at #12, 'Darkside' returns at #15, 'Lost Control' enters at #18, 'Ignite' (which he features on but is not part of the album) enters at #20, and 'Diamond Heart' returns at #27. It is also a great week for producer K-391 by association with Alan, as he features on 'Different World' and 'Lily' and he is the lead on 'Ignite'. He has not had a hit single before, 'Different World' is also the first hit for both Sofia Carson and CORSAK who also feature on it.

It is also a great week for Gryffin. Following his BJSC win 'Remember' shot into the top 20 despite an onslaught of Christmas tracks. He now jumps to #4 whilst his most recent single 'You Remind Me' enters at #9. Earlier single 'Tie Me Down' also reaches a new peak at #53. Super8 & Tab return to #5 with former #1 'Burn' to complete a 12th week in the top 10.

MJ Cole got his first hit single when 'Waking Up' entered the chart two weeks ago. It now climbs to #6, which is also the first top 10 hit for Freya Ridings as 'Lost Without You' could only make it to #27. Post Malone is the week's highest brand new entry at #7 with 'Wow.', which follows #18 hit 'Sunflower'. It becomes his third top 10 hit after 'rockstar' and 'Psycho' made #3 and #5 respectively.

CamelPhat et al. return to the top 10 with 'Breathe' at #8 and completing the top 10 are Gareth Emery & Emma Hewitt with 'Take Everything'. It follows Gareth's #41 hit 'Call To Arms' and gives him his 6th top 10 hit, including two #1s. For Emma Hewitt, it's her first top 40 hit since 2012 when she had two including a #1.

There's no shortage of new entries outside the top 10 either and the first comes from English rapper Russ splash who gets his first hit with 'Gun Lean' at #11, the highest a serious drill song has got in this chart so far. Adelphi Music Factory also get their first hit with 'Javelin (Calling Out Your Name)' at #14, which no doubt would've entered lower down the chart a few weeks ago if Christmas weren't a thing. Then at #17 we have... a censored entry! I cannot reveal it just yet as it is set to be my entry to the next Club Bizarre contest.

Lower down the top 40 we get new entries from 3 other songs. Omnia gets his 2nd top 40 hit with 'Guide You Home' at #36. Denis Kenzo gets his 2nd top 40 hit with 'Stay' at #39, and Cadet & Deno Driz are a brand new entry at #40 with 'Advice', which is the first hit single for both of them.

Alongside the expected re-entries we also have, from the End of Year effect, the return of three Avicii songs. 'Levels' is back at #16, EOY #1 contender 'Lonely Together' at #24 and 'Wake Me Up' at #33 as they got quite a few streams each this week. The effect also brings back another EOY #1 contender, 'One Kiss' by Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa at #30.

Good stuff @ MJ Cole and Post Malone entering the top 10, so close for Russ as well, and I'm very surprised that FISHER still hasn't cracked your top 10 and that Adelphi Music Factory have only just entered this week! Of course also greatly approve of 'SICKO MODE' and 'Mo Bamba' getting near to their peaks again and 'Play' getting a new peak. And that Julie McDermott remix is quite the banger as well. Also shoutouts to Weiss and Purple Disco Machine as two more bangers that deserved to at the very least see the success FISHER is getting now.

 

Nice to see raaginder is still charting here (in fact hanging on here when I decided not to even include it in my own chart any more oops!), and seemingly actually ahead of at least one song you gave more points to ;o

the Christmas takeover gets stronger by the year lol, I literally placed a cap on the Christmas re-entries to just the top 50 last year to save me compilation work because there was about 80 Xmas songs in my chart in 2017 and the number would've been even closer to 100 last year if I didn't cap it. :drama: the chart runs look so silly but it'd be rather boring to compile in December otherwise with the lack of new releases.

and indeed I've been doing a top 100 every week since late 2015, other than a few (partial) freezes for holidays.

 

Fisher may yet go top 10 here, it was a bit of an odd near miss at the time but my chart is strange sometimes. And I was waiting until after Christmas to put the Adelphi Music Factory track on my playlist otherwise it'd have entered a few weeks ago.

'Sicko Mode' is another song here that took ridiculously long to peak and with too low of a peak, I like it more than #29 suggests. 'Mo Bamba's peak is about right for now though, don't think it'll re-peak.

The Weiss track was one of my absolute faves last year, shame it did nothing despite R1 support but that was to be expected.

 

The raaginder track is your best BJSC entry since J.I.D too ('Never' briefly made my top 40), racked up ten plays for me so far.

Your chart is still crazy for Christmas songs, 50 in your Top 50 and then they all drop out the week after! Javelin sounded nice enough when I heard it yesterday anyway, the gospel choir reminded me of Bakermat's Teach Me!

 

Giving Lika Morgan - In Motion a listen now, it's sounding really good! Has those house-y vibes we really don't see in the charts any more :(

Inhale was one of my big faves of 2018 so yep definitely less than a year ago! :P

By the time I posted my post-Christmas chart I'd already stopped listening to Christmas songs. :lol: But as the chart's based on the whole week...

We don't often get a gospel choir in a dance song but it can and does work! 'Teach Me' was also a hit here (though not quite as big as 'Javelin' is set to be).

Lika's really great at the house tunes, particularly like this one for its 90s/00s vibe.
