I believe 'Free Bird' sold around 300k in physicals across its many releases, so that would indicate total sales of over 700k to date. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could shed some light?

In the 21/01/89 issue of Record Mirror Alan Jones reported that 'Free Bird' had sold over 300,000 copies. The majority, if not all, of those sales will be for the 'Free Bird EP' which was released in 1976 and which charted in 1976, 1979 (when made available as a 12" single) and 1982 (when made available as a picture disc). The 1976 EP was awarded a Silver disc (then for 250,000 sales) in 1982.

Notes:

An asterisk (*) refers to songs that may have received a higher peak had they not been briefly ineligible to chart. For instance, I'm pretty sure 'Break Free' would have received a Top 10 peak and 'The Other Side' surely would have been Top 40. All their sales, regardless of whether they were chart ineligible, are accounted for under the BPI certifications.

The BPI take into account sales for songs since February 1994 when the current compilers of the OCC took over. That's why songs that were released before 1994 get their own categories as the Platinum certifications don't take into account their original sales. This also means that there are other songs that missed the Top 10 and have sold over 600k, but don't have Platinum certifications as their sales are split between pre- and post-1994.

It did have rather good longevity, and was released in a time before ACR too.

There appears to be a mistake with the certification for 'Heartbroken'. It was already certified Silver in 2008, although that version credits Jodie and the recent version does not, which I'm guessing is how the mistake occurred.

I'm not sure where the theory that greatest hits don't sell anymore and are redundant comes from. The album chart is littered with them and 4 of the 7 certs this week are Greatest Hits.

Most of the sales are from streaming though. For instance, Fleetwood Mac's 2002 Best Of album was regularly selling over 2k but when 50 Years: Don't Stop was released and all Fleetwood Mac streams went to that album, Best Of was down to selling 200 copies.

Thanks very much for doing that list Liam! Very interesting!

Is that a bad thing? Greatest hits being ready made playlists is surely a great thing for an artist especially for getting new fans on board. How many people have streamed/purchased or explored Fleetwood mac's back catalogue after listening to the Greatest Hits.

I think Greatest Hits are more relevant than ever when with streaming you can jump into any artist you vaguely like and explore their greatest hits then go from there.

When people bring up the relevance of Greatest Hits albums it's usually regarding them in physical form. I agree with you that streaming greatest hits albums or playlists are a good way for attracting new or casual audiences. They're just losing relevance in physical form when, as you say, people can explore their discography at the press of a button.

and another thing is that once you release a GH, people stop buying your back catalogue,

that's why Coldplay have not released a GH yet, cos the old albums still sell very well

they wouldn't be doing as well if there were a GH

if someone discovered Coldplay right now, if there were a GH, they'd buy that and that's enough,

now they probably buy a bunch of their catalog albums

same for Muse, Beyonce, Rihanna

I think it's more to do with the back catalogue than with physical CDs not selling

I honestly don't think that is true. I brought Sheryl Crow's greatest hits and over the next couple of years got all her studio albums as I loved the Greatest Hits and wanted to hear more. Then got her latest album when it came out.

The artists you mentioned not having greatest hits I'm sure it is more about them having more control of their careers and for any artists I'm sure a greatest hits isnt very rewarding or artistic. It is mainly a cash in from labels artists go along with.

We can only agree to disagree

Hey Liam,

have you got any info on how these have sold since their debut year?
