35. Nero - Promises 153pts

Writers - Daniel Stephens,Joe Ray,Alana Watson

This is my favourite no.1 from the 21st Century. I didn't think it would qualify for the final so it's done as well as I would have expected. Alana Watson was still working full-time as a midwife in north London when this went straight to no.1 in 2011.

34. Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) 161pts

A well deserved no.1 for Eurythmics who released several singles that were better than this one,in my opinion. With a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder,it spent one week at no.1 in between four week chart toppers by Sister Sledge and Madonna.

The second of Avicii's two chart toppers, this spent three weeks at no.1 in 2013. It features uncredited vocals by the American singer Aloe Blacc.

Leona Lewis fans have had to be patient with both of her qualifiers drawn in the last semi-final. This one doesn't make it to the final. Will the other one do so? Leona first performed Snow Patrol's 'Run' on Radio 1's Live Lounge. A good reaction from the listeners led to her recording it for a single which reached no.1 in December 2008.

This was the current no.1 when the first round took place. It still lingers in the chart at number 28.

^ Well that is a surprise... or at least it would have been before I saw all the results come in. I maintain it deserves the 19 points I gave it, but maybe (the arguably lukewarm) So Am I has taken some of its magic away.

Ava Max was beaten to the Christmas no.1 by a sausage roll themed cover version of Starship's 'We Built This City' and the other song they are best known for finishes one place above her here. From the film 'Mannequin',it spent four weeks at no.1 in 1987.

The last of a consecutive run of eleven no.1s for the Beatles that was broken when their next single,'Strawberry Fields Forever',was kept off the top of the chart by Engelbert Humperdinck. The contrast in the sound of these two songs certainly illustrates Lennon & McCartney's songwriting versatility.

I thought they only managed 7 in a row? Either way they had a load after Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever so had that made the top it would have been an even more mega-run!

That depends on whether you include the two unofficial singles on the Polydor label. 'My Bonnie' got to no.48 and 'Ain't She Sweet' no.29. I think those two are usually disregarded when that consecutive run is mentioned.

Most of the people who voted for this song gave it a lot of points but it received only 10 votes so it just fails to make the final. It's certainly one of the more unusual no.1s. The Gregorian chants were sampled from the 1976 album 'Paschale Mysterium' by the Capella Antiqua Munchen choir. As Enigma didn't ask for any permission,a lawsuit followed.

This spent six weeks at no.1 and was the best selling single of 1989. I think most of us watching Top Of The Pops at the time thought that the girl performing the song was the singer but we later found out the vocals were sampled from 'Love Sensation' by Loleatta Holloway.

That depends on whether you include the two unofficial singles on the Polydor label. 'My Bonnie' got to no.48 and 'Ain't She Sweet' no.29. I think those two are usually disregarded when that consecutive run is mentioned.

Yeah Ain't It Sweet was the one I had in mind! Wasn't sure about its "officialness" there...

Really disappointed about the last 2 leaving :/ Ride On Time especially, one of the THE iconic dance tunes.

Poor old Rick Astley misses the final by one point. 19 people voted for this,if one of them had given him one more point,he would have beaten 'Call On Me' by Eric Prydz on a tie-break. The song spent five weeks at no.1 and was the best selling single of 1987.

I mean I do like that song but NOT at the expense of Call On Me, so glad I didn't provide that extra point.
