04. Is That Alright? // 8.69

Next up we have the song that plays over the film's closing credits. Ally's ode to Jackson, it is painfully beautiful, heartfelt and emotional. The song tells of Ally's undying love for Jackson, her vocals soar, subdue and totally encapsulate the passion and adoration she has for him. It is a tender moment with grit and raw emotion. The question that the song repeats makes it yet more heart-breaking - her desire to be with the man she loves is questioned throughout the film and its challenges and pitfalls all climax in this one, beautiful piece of music. Absolutely heart-breakingly beautiful.

For me, this is the best thing to come from this entire era. It is cementing itself as one of my favourite moments of her career as a whole and it is just the perfect representation of love. #4 placing and a score of 8.69 is incredible, but for this, in my opinion, it is far, far too low. </3

Heal Me getting an average score of just over 8  deserved x

Is That Alright? - a beauty

03. I'll Never Love Again // 9.2

Racking up a very impressive average, but not quite managing to clinch the top 2, it's the closing number in the song. Accompanied by flashbacks to the loving moments between Ally and Jackson, the song is a soaring ballad of infinite beauty.

When Gaga was getting ready to film this scene, she received the news that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her last moments of Stage IV cancer. She left the stage but arrived ten minutes after her friend died. Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, so she returned to the set and sang "I'll Never Love Again". Gaga has said that "Sonja gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to the set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an hour." Not only a poingnant moment of the film but also for Gaga herself, her career and her life.

The top 3 are nearly inseparable for me, there's no way I could pick a firm fave between them. I'm very curious to see how close their scores will be to one another.

Doesn't feel right for INLA to miss the top 2, but that said it wouldn't feel right for the other two either!

02. Always Remember Us This Way // 10.00

Offering stiff competition to the top spot, in second place we have the soundtrack's second single. It managed a perfect 10! The song became an instant favourite for fans and the public, amassing strong sales globally and an enduring streaming hit. It's a mournful, sorrowful song about how love ages yet memories remain. The lovers are stuck in a moment of pure bliss and it is this that powers them through future hardships. A magical moment of the film, as Ally gradually rises to stardom, it is this song that represents her talent and undying love. A true beauty of the film and soundtrack and also one of her greatest ballads to date. But it hasn't quite done enough to nab the top spot...

01. Shallow // 10.11

And taking the gold medal, it's rightfully the biggest song from the film, and more fittingly a Ally/Jackson duet. The song is heard three times throughout the film, most prominently during a sequence when Jackson invites Ally to perform it onstage with him and from that moment on, her true talent and worth is realised for the world. It's the song that kickstarts her career and defines her life with Jackson. It's a song about questioning whether you are content with who you are, and it dramatically puts all of this into a huge, crashing realisation of self-worth and belief.

The song has gone on to become a major success for Gaga: It has topped the UK and US charts, one of the most awarded songs in history, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Song, it garnered four Grammy Award nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year while winning for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media and has ultimately become one of the defining songs of the decade. A huge, monster smash and rightfully so. It is powerful, emotive and special. A very, very worthy #1.

Shallow  A very worthy winner indeed! Such a deserved success for her (and Bradley x) in terms of the charts & awards. Definitely my favourite song on the album.

Thanks for hosting this Bal, have enjoyed reading your commentaries !!

Surprised Shallow won on here tbh.

But a worthy winner. That last moment of the song and THAT note is one of the best things to come from 2018 in music and film.

Enjoyed this rate :P
