Yay another round and now that 'EY' has gone, I'm gonna go for X, like I said previously I love everything that's left and just going through a rigorous process of rating tracks on each album and have an overall score for them, and this just happens to be lowest rated out of what's left. This is an important album in Kylie's discography as it came after such a troubling and heartbreaking time in her life and thankfully she pulled through and came back with something quite great, although not perfect by any means, but think there are enough high points on this collection to consider it a great return and just can't imagine a world without Kylie in it, it just wouldn't be natural.

2 Hearts - Our first little taster of this new album comes in the form of this very different lead single, more pop/rock than anything she's done before, very quirky and takes its time to grow on you. This doesn't really set the tone for what's to come and feels rather at odds with the rest of the album, but it was great to see Kylie so alive and vibrant again. Would I have chosen this first NO!, and was there better choices on here instead YES, however you gotta admit you didn't see this coming and shows that even Kylie can pull the rug from under us and totally shock us. It's just O.K.

Like A Drug - Now this is more like it, the cool beat that just crackles and in my opinion really begins the album properly with the more familiar dance/pop Kylie sound that we've become accustomed to, everything just works so well and so sublime it sizzles. Maybe this could have worked better as the lead single or at the very least a later single. This song is simply fantastic...have I said that already, oh well who cares.

In My Arms - The synths and blazing beats that really goes off with an almighty electric explosion, along with Kylie's commanding vocals and some top notch production by Calvin Harris, we are guided through three and a half minutes of pure pop perfection. A fantastic single choice and it would have been criminal not to have chosen this. This track just has some really great energy to it and think its safe to say that this is true standout moment. Plus it has some well and truly amazing b-sides.

Speakerphone - Another stomping tune and another fresh, new sound for Kylie (at the time) to this already growing number of fantastic pop/dance numbers, with elements of Electro Pop and Synthpop that really gives the production an interesting cool sound, okay maybe its a bit out there for some people's taste and may not have quite fitted on Radio playlists at the time, but in my opinion this should have been given an American release as it already had some hype over there thanks to Madonna, they should have cashed in and took a risk.

Sensitized - Some nice breathless vocals by Kylie on here with some okay funky tones, but never really connected with this song and always found it quite weak and very filler, and also like a few others on here doesn't really belong and could have made way for something better.

Heart Beat Rock - A fun and funky dance track with some cool synth stabs and minimal beat thanks to some interesting production by Calvin Harris that creates on the whole a rather fun listen.

The One - An excellent tune that commands and stands high above its surroundings. It’s Kylie at her absolute best. Angelic and power vocals dominate every minute of this epic little number that simply soars to the high heavens and perhaps would have made a better lead single and could have given Kylie an 8th UK #1, or at the very least deserve a better release than the criminal scaled down digital release it got. With this one song, Kylie was back. It’s familiar, it’s comforting and above all it’s Kylie at her absolute best.

No More Rain - Slowing the tone down a bit with this beautiful track that Kylie fought hard for its placement on here, yeah sure it does stick out like a sore thumb, but it does however shimmer and radiate with class and style. A nice emotional anthem that I would call yet another standout moment on this album.

All I See - The R&B moment of this collection and speaking of sticking out, this sultry low key number does have a nice groove to it, very smooth and soothing, yet at the same time very catchy. Although a very obvious attempt at cracking the American Urban market (given this was the lead over there), but wouldn't say that this was a strong enough for a single release though. Perhaps would have been better suited as a stand-alone or something.

Stars - Back to the more familiar dance/pop sound for Kylie with some nice beats and dance rhythms going on. A decent tune but no masterpiece and definitely belongs as an album track.

Wow - Certainly picking up the pace in a well and truly glorious fashion, definitely one of the best tracks on this album, right from the fast keys the open this song to the rush of synths prior to the opening of the first verse. This has a very positive and upbeat vibe to it and love how it has that classic Kylie pop sound, but given a more modern electropop sound. A firm favourite of mine by the way, if you can't already tell.

Nu-di-ty - Probably the most experimental song on here, thankfully it doesn't last too long and very blunt and straight to the point. There is no song here (not a real one anyway), and perhaps would have been better suited as a b-side, or just left on the cutting room floor.

Cosmic - Closing the album with a more soulful tone, very heartfelt and really quite moving, along with some nice use of orchestral instruments. A nice underrated moment on the album that doesn't really get mentioned and why not its simply great and deserves a moment to shine.

Rippin' Up The Disco - I know this was only a CD-ROM track, but I'm giving it a shout out, a fun little upbeat number with a futuristic mix of bass driven music that should have been included properly on here, this just has a really cool vibe that definitely would have fitted nicely in place on here, and plus this is on my version of album (self-made), along with some of the fantastic b-sides.

So on the whole this album is very messy and should NOT have been so rushed like it was, as there are some fantastic high points on here, but the few low points on here do drag things down a bit. There was enough material to make a banging electro pop album, with tracks like 'Magnetic Electric', 'Cherry Bomb', 'Do It Again' & 'Ruffle My Feathers' (to name a few) and maybe keep some of the other moments on another disc, that's one idea that I have is maybe release this as a 2CD album. CD1 Electro/Pop dance bangers, and CD 2 could display the other types of genres and sounds. As it stands there was just too much going on and tried to be too many things in one go. There should have been a more clear vision for this album, then we could have had something even more incredible.

For album cover that was a really tough one as I love them both, but went with 'LY', as I find 'Fever' far more iconic and cool. But 'Light Years' is fantastic also.

For least fave singles run, I decided to go with 'Light Years', as while I do love 'SA', 'OANLT', 'YDNY', 'PS' and hell even have a soft spot for 'Kids', I felt that the UK really missed out on getting a proper release of 'YDNY' and that deserved more than a limited worldwide release. Plus tracks like 'Disco Down' & 'Butterfly' being left out entirely, they could have been huge, especially the latter which could have the very least been a 5th UK single.

As always another fantastic review, thank you. I agree with most of it except for Wow, I really really don't like that song ( I know im in the minority ). I fact I would prefer to listen to All I see which to me was always underrated.

The One sooooooo should have been the first single, especially the remixed version

2hearts shouldnt have even been on the album, not that I hate it, just doenst fit here at all

As for single choices, I cant stand Kids and thankful that we didn't get YDNY, its an ok song but I was happy it didn't get a full release. Disco Down was the album highlight for me.

I revisit 'X' much more than 'Aphrodite'. I find it more creatively inspiring. Definitely a mixed bag, but a very interesting listen.
The votes are neck and neck which isnt a big surprise as whats left is all brill. X as i have often said its like 2 dif albums put together, one is good and one is disappointing. Aphrodite has a consistent feel and sound throughout and as a whole runs better plus it has All The Lovers. All the remaining albums are very different, all brill and very Kylie is varying ways and shows why she is still in the business 30 years on.
Yay another round and now that 'EY' has gone, I'm gonna go for X, like I said previously I love everything that's left and just going through a rigorous process of rating tracks on each album and have an overall score for them, and this just happens to be lowest rated out of what's left. ...

'2 Hearts' has always felt at home on X for me, perhaps it helps that I like the track in the first place but I don't see what's so jarringly different about it to the rest of the album. I thought it was a strong comeback for Kylie; it's a bold new style and shows that Kylie had so much more to give. I always liked the connection of the title and her appearance on that year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, too. I can admit that 'The One' would have made a fantastic comeback; it kind of takes off with what 'I Believe in You' started and pushes it to the maximum. A really beautiful, enchanting song and it's a wonder how the record label sat on this for so long (and then gave it a shoddy release when they did take notice).

The version of X we received is still up there with my favourite Kylie albums but it definitely had the potential to be her absolute best. Some fantastic bonus material from this era and I hope they become physically available some day. I think Kylie was so in demand at this point and it was hard to settle on what would make the album when there was probably 4 times the material.

Another great review Sam, always a joy to read.
