* 'The Sound Of Silence' and (probably) 'Evergreen' spent these weeks in the Top 100 after being reset to SCR and before falling back to ACR: they have been included in this list as their first tenures on ACR began by default. Ed Sheeran - Perfect spent 32 weeks in the Top 100 in one run on SCR in 2020 after being reset, however as it had already fallen to ACR, it does not qualify for this list. 'Evergreen' perhaps may have fallen back to ACR and needed a second reset between its first and second weeks on chart (30 weeks apart) which would thus disqualify it from the list altogether.

Perfect and Someone You Loved both getting new positions this week. Perfect now only 1 behind Chasing Cars overall.

It may now forever be assigned to ACR and therefore stay short of My Way's 124 weeks in the Top 75, but Perfect had already done enough to take the record for weeks in the Top 82, 83 and 84... and more importantly, with #94 now added to its collection, it now has an outright record of 75 different positions in the Top 100!
  • 2 months later...
Perfect #100 this week, now only missing 3 positions between #76 and #100, it’ll probably drop out next week but I’m sure it’ll be back after Christmas

To mark the re-appearance of two festive oldies in the Top 50 and the continuing presence of "Blinding Lights", here's an update of records by most weeks in the top 50

123 - "My Way" Frank Sinatra

80 - "Someone You Loved" Lewis Capaldi

79 - "Perfect" Ed Sheeran

76 - "Fairytale of New York" Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl

72 - "ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU" Mariah Carey

68 - "Shotgun" George Ezra

66 - "Amazing Grace" Judy Collins

65 - "Thinking Out Loud" Ed Sheeran

61 - "Dance Monkey" Tones & I

60 - "Rather Be" Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne

58 - "All Of Me" John Legend

"Shape Of You" Ed Sheeran

57 - "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" Wizzard

"Rock Around The Clock" Bill Haley & His Comets

56 - "Release Me" Engelbert Humperdinck

55 - "LAST CHRISTMAS" Wham! *

"Stranger On The Shore" Mr Acker Bilk

54 - "Sex On Fire" Kings of Leon

"Take Me To Church" Hozier

53 - "Chandelier" Sia

"Happy" Pharrell Williams

"Someone Like You" Adele

"This Is Me" Keala Settle

51 - "BLINDING LIGHTS" The Weeknd

50 - "Let It Go" Idina Menzel

"Merry Xmas Everybody" Slade #

* - "Last Christmas" has 11 extra weeks as a Double A-side with "Everything She Wants"

# - "Merry Xmas Everybody" has 2 extra weeks in a version credited to Slade vs Flush

Surely ‘Last Christmas’ has to automatically count the extra 11 weeks?

Thanks fchd. That's one record Sinatra will be keeping for a while - if the Pogues reach the Top 40 next week, they'll end up taking his record for weeks in the Top 40 on January 1st.

I agree Steve, perhaps aside from 1 or 2 weeks in January 1985 when Everything She Wants was getting the airplay, people were buying the Wham! double A-side for Last Christmas, so I'd combine all its chart weeks.

All lists updated, forgot how long that took each week around Christmas last year

At least one song on permanent ACR due to being over 3 years old has now held every position in the Top 100 with the exception of #40 – maybe one day I’ll post a full list...

As it's my 1500th post, that day is today :magic: so here are the first songs to reach each position while on permanent ACR. #40 was finally taken thanks to the resurgence of Dreams a few weeks ago. As alluded to above. The #1 position has now been held by 2 songs on permanent ACR.

Sinatra’s record weeks in the top 40 of 75 will also most likely fall to The Pogues this year, or at the very least be equaled.

I’m sure I’ve heard before but what happened Mariah in 2010?
I’m sure I’ve heard before but what happened Mariah in 2010?

There was a period at the height of the download era when the Christmas songs struggled to compete. I think it was a combination of people already having downloaded them in previous years and the non Christmas market being really strong. I remember thinking that in a few years they might not make the Top 40 at all.

Think they recovered a bit when the 2012 Now Christmas album came out due to cherry picking, and then of course as soon as streaming was counted they came back with a vengeance.

I think 2011 was also the start of Christmas songs being heavily discounted on iTunes every year iirc? Which definitely helped to combat the saturation.

I see this has been updated, but Perfect’s record for most weeks in top 82-84 is not in blue so I’m not sure if that needs addressing?

Thanks, I knew I'd forgotten something! Updated

Edit: and updated again for this week - poor Chasing Cars continues being attacked at both ends there.

2000th post (and they've all been in this forum)

I've shifted some of the lists so now all the Most weeks in total in the UK Singles Top X ones appear in the OP, to which I've added most weeks at #1, with or without ACR. The other lists all appear on this page with all the Christmas ones together.

Within the lists themselves, Someone You Loved, which already had the most consecutive weeks in the Top 100, now makes the top ten for most weeks in total. At the same time, Thinking Out Loud, which still has the most consecutive weeks in the Top 50, drops out of the corresponding top ten. Shallow will become the 19th song to reach 100 weeks in total next week - it lands at its 62nd different position this week so needs one more to join the top ten for most positions visited.
