The horror that is 'Dirty Sexy Money' achieves what must be a pretty rare distinction of finishing dead last in its year with nul points for a second year in a row, whoever's nominated it the last two years doesn't seem to want to commit to actually voting for it and it's quite rightfully not picking up points from anyone else either. The rest of the bottom end is peppered with Pete nominations which only Pete voted for. There aren't any particularly dramatic (or upsetting) losses of AQ positions here, the most surprising one is probably Portugal. The Man who I'm surprised were as low as 25th last time and even more surprised to see falling short of the top 35 entirely this year. Adele, Harry Styles and J Balvin also filter their way out leaving us with only four changes to the AQ roster. We're all consistent. My nomination of 'Homemade Dynamite' provides the highest new entry just a few points short of making it into the AQ tier, while there are also good but not good enough rises just a little short of that top 35 for great tunes from CamelPhat, Charli XCX and most pleasingly alt-J, as well as both of Stormzy's big hits of the year. BROCKHAMPTON's 4 songs combined would net them a collective place in the semi-finals, the success! There's a bit of a surprisingly limp debut for Lizzo's 'Truth Hurts', one assumes it'll be moved into 2019 for next year's edition and might do a little better.

As established in the previous paragraph there are only four new AQs this year but two of those four have managed to progress to at least the semi-finals. The other two, Shawn Mendes' best song and Martin Garrix's not best song, just about make it into the AQ tier with solid gains on last year's performance. All of last year's top 12 are still in the top 20, with the most dramatic drop of the round going to Calvin & co.'s 'Feels' which goes from 13th to nearly losing its AQ status. Paramore, Taylor Swift, Jax Jones, Disciples and Steps also fall out so we have a larger turnover of six new (at least) semi-finalists. Happy to see 'rockstar' and 'HUMBLE.' retain AQ status, especially as the former actually took quite a while to get off 0.

Katy Perry may have lost a semi-finalist in 'Feels' but she has a net gain as the first two singles from 'Witness' both climb up to replace it, 'Chained To The Rhythm' just scrapes in after only just missing out last time (it wins the tiebreak with '...Ready For It?' by 15 votes to 11) while 'Bon Appétit' has the most dramatic rise of anything in this round, all the way up in 13th after floundering outside the top 50 last year. I'm glad BuzzJack has belatedly come to their senses and rightfully declared this the best of the 'Witness' singles. The other huge climber and going to the semis after not being an AQ last year is ZAYN & Sia which I also approve of. Not so good a new arrival is Kygo & Selena Gomez'... thing. The last two rises into the top 20 come from CNCO & Little Mix and Kesha, both of which I'd have expected to be higher both now and last year. 'Havana' sadly slips out of the top 5 so there's one new face in our direct qualifiers...

...and as much as I like 'Havana' I think this is actually a change for the better, as it's a great year for Dua Lipa with 'Be The One' rising into the top 5 as well as 'New Rules' this year managing to pip 'Anywhere' to the top spot for 2017 (it was very close between the two throughout but they're a very clear cut top 2 amongst a very clear cut top 5). 'Green Light' had a slow start and I worried it would lose its top 5 status but it more than picked up and actually rises a place to 3rd. Oh and 'Symphony' is also here. People still like that song for some reason.

Surprised that Little Mix aren't top 5 with 'Touch' :o a very successful year for Dua and I can't complain as I love both of those hits from her!

Pretty surprising to see 'JUNKY' highest! I suppose it helps that it has like... 3? dedicated fans, and most of their votes probably came from few dedicated fans anyway. Great debuts for 'Getaway Car' and 'No Limit', quite surprised at the latter! A pleasant rebuke of the Least Favourite Cardi B Single results ~

Good to see it hang on then, and '...Ready For It?' almost top 20 and now the highest Taylor song! hmm, 'Dusk Till Dawn' lowkey feels already forgotten to me, so that's not the direction I would've expected it to move in. I like how 'Bon Appétit' surged just like on YouTube this year (fun fact: it's currently getting more views than 'Roar' and twice as many as 'Never Really Over'). Cool for Lorde.

Liking the big gains for I Fall Apart and Heavy outside the AQ slots, and nice to see 1-800 enter quite high too. Glad Post Malone and Kendrick managed to hold onto their AQ places, and happy that Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa made it in this time too. Not here for the shade of It Ain't Me in the commentary but glad it's staying in the competition, otherwise not a lot to say about the semi-finalists section apart from my surprise at Touch missing out again, and yay for Be The One joining the finalists!

Omg YES @ Bon Appetit FINALLY getting the recognition it deserves!!! When I noticed it hadn't popped up by the time I got to Swish Swish I started wondering if it had even been nominated but I was sure I had voted for it lol, I just wasn't expecting it to get so high as everyone has always hated on it (without good reason I might add).
