I think you might find the Irish would have plenty of things to say to that, not least that they've had quite enough of "compromising" to accommodate the wishes of the British.

They're forever our neighbours. We need to be on good terms with them. It's important they are happy with whatever byzantine unentanglement plan that a successful Brexit necessitates.

"Boris Johnson’s team has started talking to Labour MPs about his new Brexit proposals, as the prime minister seeks to shore up Commons support ahead of a possible vote on his plan.

Labour MP Lisa Nandy said there had been tentative conversations between Labour MPs and senior members of the cabinet in recent days - and revealed that around 40 rebels could defy Jeremy Corbyn to support a deal."

Don't really see the point if a new deal won't get the approval of the EU.

Well all is still not lost and we may still leave on October 31st. Sky saying Varadkar has just requested an urgent meeting with Boris as soon as possible to discuss this arrangement. I hope there is a last-minute deal as Sky thinks there could be and I think it may get through the Commons this time. Ireland and not the EU seems to be the stumbling block.

Boris would be a national HERO and am sure even you guys would admire him for getting a deal and us out by 31st. :)

He couldn't compete with Algernon Monqueef - he is hilarious.

Lmao WROOONG.

Urgent meetings are par course. It's nothing. Bojo is PUSHING AN ANTI DEMOCRATIC DEAL WHICH WE DO NOT f***ING NEED. JUST REVOKE.

IRELAND’s Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has been told to stop trying to “thwart” Brexit and “just let it happen” - by a former top Irish diplomat.

And Ray Bassett has said Ireland will now be coming under significant pressure to get behind the plan unveiled on Wednesday by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which proposes replacing the backstop for the Irish border with a system whereby Northern Ireland leaves the Customs Union but stays in the single market for goods. Former ambassador to Canada, Jamaica and the Bahamas Mr Bassett’s remarks coincided with the publication of his new paper, Boris Johnson's Working Compromise, by the Politeia think tank. Mr Bassett told Express.co.uk: “Boris Johnson’s latest proposals are a direct consequence of Leo Varadkar refusing to engage."

“But Ireland’s interests are not the same as those in Brussels.

“Rather, Ireland’s interests are much more closely aligned with those of the UK.

“Ireland needs a good, close relationship with Britain, as our closest neighbours.

“Nobody likes this deal in Ireland, but the fact is if the UK wants to leave the EU then we are going to have to accept something like this.

“Up to know, the Irish have been trying to thwart Brexit.

“Instead, Leo and everyone else needs to accept it and make the best of a bad deal.”

Eurocrats were “looking seriously” at the fresh proposals, consequently turning up the heat in the Irish leader, he suggested.

Mr Bassett’s paper suggests Mr Johnson’s plan was a “serious attempt to bridge the gap between the various competing interests”.

He wrote: “Any workable scheme to avoid customs checks would have involved some local arrangements which would not be compatible with the rigid enforcement of the Single Market.

So there you have an Irish diplomat saying Leo should stop thwarting Brexit and accept the deal now. He knows more than any of us here.

Except he is not just any old person. He is an Irish diplomat so must know more than either me or you. He's spot on. Varadkar should accept this deal now.

Yes l know that but he's angry isn't he so obviously isn't thinking clearly? It's quite a childish churlish thing to do I admit and will just put their backs up even more but you can't blame him for being angry and fed up when he wanted us out by 31st Oct. and everyone's frustrating him. Everyone has their breaking point. :( It's like a lion. You keep poking it.....Think of poor Boris as that lion being poked now.

Being able to think clearly at all times is a rather important quality for a Prime Minister. Good to see that you are finally beginning to see that Johnson isn’t up to the job.

He couldn't compete with Algernon Monqueef - he is hilarious.

Oh he is. He's hilarious and is even trying to convince us all that he was top poster this week when he's never ever been top. :)

He's 100% wrong. The deal is f***ing shite and Ireland will not bow down to master England. Mwaaa. Sorry :(

He is a poltician. He's been in office for like 2 months? He is not allowed to get frustrated and throw his toys out of the pram

Yes but is it right that he can hold the whole EU to ransom and alone frustrate Brexit like this? It's wrong. Why can't Ireland compromise too?

Have you heard about that little thing called the Good Friday Agreement? And that little thing called The Troubles? Splitting up the 2 irish parts (when northern ireland voted remain) is gonna cause hella trouble on the island

I see no reason to admire anyone who ploughs ahead with something when every government assessment says it will be damaging to the economy. Why should I admire someone who is determined to make it more difficult for me to get a job elsewhere in Europe?

No, a former diplomat. In the Daily Express.

To Jamaica, Bahama's and Canada. What does he know of the needs of Ireland when it comes to the UK?

I have been officially top 3 times and unofficially 8 times. So yeah. There is no mandate for what your beloved supreme leader dictator is doing. P.s, HE HATES YOU.

HATE is a very strong word when you think about it. I doubt Boris hates anyone. It's probably not even in his nature.

Not in the nature of someone who handed a watermelon to a black woman at a posh party and made noises? Riiight.
