Written by Charlie Brooker and his wife Konnie Huq (who interestingly presented The Xtra Factor the previous year), the show is based around entertainment consumption and the massive popularity of reality shows and people wanting to get on them, now matter how little their talent, to make that dollar. The episode is more than that though as it presents an extremely dystopian world, where people live in boxes completely surrounded by screens and you have to pay your way for anything and everything. Despite the limited budget, it really sets up the world well and, once again, there is no happy endings as our two leads continue to be slaves to the system. It's perhaps one of the more dated Black Mirrors in part of it's ideas as talent shows have become less popular over the last few years (perhaps as people moved on to social media where there's even more of a chance that anyone can become 'famous'). The screen rooms are still a chilling idea however.

The Entire History of You is one of the more smaller scale Black Mirror episodes, which only helps to benefit it. The episode focuses on a young couple where technology enhances the paranoia within the relationship. One of the reasons I love this episode is that the whole thing centres around one tiny action that would have easily been passed off in any other drama but the technology here leads to the lead character replaying and replaying it. Whilst his obsession and paranoia leads to the truth, it doesn't portray this as a good thing and therefore opens up interesting debates as to whether benefits to technology can actually be more damaging.

Hang The DJ - I'm surprised it's that well received, it's nothing on the rest!

Hang the DJ and Black Museum are still a bit below the rest so it's not impossible just yet, went for the latter. It is suitably disturbing but the ending can't quite keep it all together.

 

 

I settled on Shut Up and Dance in the end. It’s clever and all and the twist being about your own perception is also good but I’ve never felt the need to view it again.
