October 23, 20195 yr Mariah is coming for that number 1! Mariah Carey will star in this year’s Walkers Christmas advert. The singer has signed up for the snack company’s festive offering, which is set to launch in November, the PA news agency has been told. Carey said: “Everyone knows how festive I am, and it’s been fun getting into the holiday spirit this year with Walkers crisps – they’re irresistible! “I can’t say too much about the campaign yet, but there may be some fun twists at the end!” The campaign ties in with Carey’s 1994 festive album, Merry Christmas, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and will be re-released on November 1. The singer also recently announced her All I Want For Christmas Is You tour, named after her hit Christmas single from the album. The track has gone on to become a Christmas staple in the holiday period. Wayne Newton, head of marketing at Walkers, said: “Our seasonal range of flavours – from Pigs in Blankets to Brussels Sprouts – has just been reintroduced to shelves, and we know the nation is already feeling festive as a result. But with Mariah on board too, our Christmas spirit has just stepped up a gear. “It doesn’t get much bigger than working with a global superstar like Mariah and it’s been a big secret for us to keep – but we can finally announce that the rumours are true … the Queen of Christmas herself will be the star of our biggest ever Walkers Christmas advert. Keep your eyes peeled in the upcoming weeks for the ad.” Sports broadcaster Gary Lineker has been the face of the snack brand for more than two decades and earlier this year it was announced that actress Emily Atack will also promote the crisps.

October 23, 20195 yr - Will AIWFCIY will finally be a Christmas #1? Will a special campaigning be made for its 25th anniversary?: No, but there will be a campaign. - Or instead will Last Christmas finally be a Christmas #1, given its 35th anniversary and the release of the movie of the same name? No - Will there be more than 25 Christmas songs in the top 40 Christmas chart? Yes - Will Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer (40th anniversary this year) this year finally chart in the UK? No - Will Adele/Rihanna/Sia release anything? Sia probably might - Will another unknown-ish Whitney Houston have a new treatment by Kygo or another producer dujour? Maybe - Does Ed Sheeran have a trick on his sleeve concerning the Christmas chart? Yes - Could Billie Eilish/Khalid's Lovely get a new push? (X-Factor or likewise) Depends on what show it is being sung, but probably not. - Will the X-Factor All Stars winner single have some kind of chart impact? Depends who wins it - Could there be a Band Aid-ish all-star charity single for the environment or other cause? Yes - Or just another boring collective choir cover? Yes
October 23, 20195 yr Next year Christmas is on a Friday and the succeeding years will only have 2 - 4 days of sales, which wont be enough for number one. 2024 is the next year when she'll have at least 6 days of sales. But who knows in what state the charts will be in by then.
October 23, 20195 yr why last? she has a chance every year I would say because xmas falls on Wednesday which has the highest streams of course, then Thursday is estimated on Wednesday so they will be hugely inflated compared to what they in reality would be on boxing day. It won't be until 2024 that this happens again by which time I imagine the OCC will have changed the rules again so I think this really is last chance.

After last year I wouldn’t put it past them to take that into account when they make their estimates... they robbed her of a #1 last year I’m sure they’ll do it again
October 23, 20195 yr Last year, AIWFCIY did 574k Spotify streams on 20 Dec and 259k on 26 Dec. By contrast, Sweet But Psycho did 388k Spotify streams on 20 Dec and 336k on 26 Dec. So had the chart week been based on streams for 20-25 Dec (as they will this year) rather than 21-26 Dec, even with streaming points halved by ACR, Mariah would have likely gained considerably more points than Ava (more than enough to overturn the eventual margin by which Ava took #1). Thus the theory goes that Mariah should have a better chance of taking #1 this year than last. I go along with this, but another big factor will be whether AIWFCIY can match or better the near-astronomical streaming figures on 24 and 25 Dec from last year - respectively 1,188k and 1,637k on Spotify alone. I wonder how much the adverts and extra promo will actually help in this regard - assuming it doesn't get a reset (if it does, #1 will be a formality), the risk is the overexposure will have a negative effect e.g. people get tired of hearing the song on TV or wherever so start skipping it when it pops up on the many Xmas playlists which are still what really count - but I hope I'm wrong here.
October 23, 20195 yr Plus it depends on the competition. If there's another Sheeran drop around the time it will need to amass much more combined sales. In this example it would absolutely definitely require a reset to SCR in order to compete.
October 23, 20195 yr We just don't know whether there will be a huge release from the likes of Adele at this time but it has a big opportunity.
