Robbie Williams: ‘I’m happier than I’ve ever been’

The singer talks to Ed Potton about mental health, his new art show at Sotheby’s — and why he’s playing his older self in a biopic of his life

Robbie Williams sums up his first foray into art with splendid bluntness. “People say, ‘What’s it like?’ and I say, ‘It’s not shit.’ ” Indeed it’s not. I know because Ed Godrich, Williams’s collaborator, is giving me a sneak preview of the pieces they have painted together for a show in London next week. And they are definitely not shit. Don’t take my word for it, take the word of the American collector who recently paid more than £40,000 for another of their artworks, double the estimated price.

We’re at the Sotheby’s warehouse in the far reaches of west London. Williams isn’t here — he’s shooting a commercial in the Netherlands and we are speaking separately — but the affable, Shropshire-based Godrich is talking me

Sotheby’s debut of Robbie Williams’ art puts Sharon and Trish on show

Paintings produced in collaboration with Ed Godrich are titled with ‘names that define the 1980s’

Trish has never been seen in public before. Nor have Sharon, Janet, Debbie, Denise, Donna, Jacqui, Joanne, Kim, Lorraine, Mandy, Paula, Sandra or Tina. Their curious titles – all women’s names that were popular back when Williams was a Stoke-on-Trent schoolboy – are not the artworks’ only common factor. The large-scale black and white images, the fruits of a five-year collaboration, are strikingly thematic.

I like their artwork !

Thanks for that Laura. I like the look of them as well, I think these paintings need to be seen up close & personal as with all art pieces to really understand & appreciate them. I hope you get to see them Laura, exhibition opens today :) Also great to see that Rob is in a really good place mentally these days .
