29 people voted for 373 number 2 singles out of 1031. The oldest song was 'Heartbreak Hotel' by Elvis Presley from 1954 and the most recent was 'Before You Go' by Lewis Capaldi. If the latter qualifies for the semi-finals,it will be withdrawn if it reaches no.1.

Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Dr Hook and the Medicine Show - Sylvia's Mother

McFly - One For The Radio

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way

10cc - Donna

Justin Timberlake featuring T.I. - My Love

Sylvia's Mother is one that just missed on my vote. You can tell it's from the 70s as it involves a phone call from a phone box to a landline. Dr Hook still have one song left. 10cc's great debut single,Donna,is here along with Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm. Are there any other top 40 singles which use only one letter from the alphabet in their title?

RHCP out already :(

Other than Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, I can only think of one letter titles that contain one letter e.g. X by Xzibit

Kelis - Milkshake

Madonna - Hanky Panky

Madonna - Hollywood

Pepsi & Shirlie - Heartache

Diana Ross - Upside Down

Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman

Holly Valance - Down Boy

When A Man Loves A Woman got to no.4 in 1966 and then no.2 when it was re-issued in 1987. We quickly lose 2 of Madonna's 10 songs.

Technically '2U' by David Guetta feat. Justin Bieber fits the bill as well for a title with more than one character in it :magic: (there are of course many top 40 hits which have no letters of the alphabet in them as their title is only a number, it took me far too long to find an example of a song with only one letter plus at least one number in its title to make this observation lol)

There are also some one-letter titles, which obviously means they only use one letter of the alphabet! Kendrick Lamar's 'i' would be an example.

[Edit: ah, just seen the posts above looking for songs with more than one character!]

Other than Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, I can only think of one letter titles that contain one letter e.g. X by Xzibit

'2U' is also a one letter title :P

Back to the #2s, Upside Down very nearly made my 30!

Bay City Rollers - Shang-a-Lang

Irene Cara - Flashdance...What A Feeling

The Chainsmokers featuring Daya - Don't Let Me Down

Ellie Goulding - Your Song

Alyssa Reid featuring Jump Smokers - Alone Again

Minnie Riperton - Lovin' You

The Saturdays - Forever Is Over

Sash! featuring Adrian Rodriguez - Ecuador

Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body

Irene Cara has a no.1 and a no.2 with songs from movies and no other hits apart from the appropriately named 'Out Here On My Own' which only got to no.58. Lovin' You is best remembered for Minnie Riperton's extremely high registered notes.

There are also some one-letter titles, which obviously means they only use one letter of the alphabet! Kendrick Lamar's 'i' would be an example.

'2U' is also a one letter title :P

Is there an echo in this thread xx

Electric Six - Danger! High Voltage

James - Sit Down

JLS - Take A Chance On Me

Roxy Music - Dance Away

Ed Sheeran and Rudimental - Bloodstream

Steps - It's The Way You Make Me Feel

Sit Down finished in 4th place when BBC Radio 2 ran a poll of no.2 singles but in the world of Buzzjack,it flounders on 4 points. We also have Roxy Music's classic from 1979 and some pop from Steps and JLS.

The Black Eyed Peas - Shut Up

David Bowie - Absolute Beginners

Embrace - Nature's Law

George Harrison - Got My Mind Set On You

Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror

Natalie Imbruglia - Big Mistake

Status Quo - In The Army Now

When 'Got My Mind Set On You' came out,I thought it was an original song. It was only later on that I discovered that it was a cover of a James Ray song from 1962. Man In The Mirror only got to no.21 in 1988 but reached no.2 after Michael Jackson died in 2009. There are also two great songs here by David Bowie and Status Quo.

I considered nominating 'Man In The Mirror' but it's not really one of my favourite MJ songs, I just hate that it peaked at #2 behind Cascada of all things under the circumstances.

Boney M - Ma Baker

Craig David featuring Sting - Rise & Fall

Guns N' Roses - Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme

Diana King - Shy Guy

Pink featuring Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason

Spagna - Call Me

T Rex - Children Of The Revolution

The Vamps - Can We Dance

This disco classic is based on Ma Barker, the mother of several members of an American criminal gang from the early part of the 20th Century. We also have T Rex with what was their 7th consecutive top 2 single (if you ignore an unofficial re-issue).

Backstreet Boys - All I Have To Give

The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup

Girls Aloud - Something New

Barry Ryan - Eloise

Squeeze - Cool For Cats

It's Not Right But It's OK by Whitney Houston was given 7 points by vibe but only reached no.3.

A new wave classic from Squeeze from 1979 with a rare lead vocal from Chris Difford. We also have a great song with a memorable title,'Build Me Up Buttercup'. I'm verifying these as I go along and we have our first disqualification.

Bodyrox featuring Luciana - Yeah Yeah

The Beautiful South - Perfect 10

Corinne Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On

Girls Aloud - Jump

Elton John & Kiki Dee - True Love

The Mamas And The Papas - Dedicated To The One I Love

Billy Ocean - Love Really Hurts Without You

O C Smith - The Son Of Hickory Holler's Tramp

Nina Simone - Ain't Got No,I Got Life / Do What You Gotta Do

Steps - Love's Got A Hold On My Heart

Perfect 10 from 1998 was the Beautiful South's final top 10 single. I've had a listen to the songs by O C Smith and Nina Simone (both from 1968). I don't think I've heard them before. I'm more familiar with the wonderful 'Dedicated To The One I Love' from 1967,the Mamas and Papas' cover of the Shirelles' song from 1959.

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm. Are there any other top 40 singles which use only one letter from the alphabet in their title?

There's U by Loni Clark which reached number 28 in 1994, and X by Snoop Dogg which reached number 14 in 2001. Outside of the Top 40 there are also I by Petey Pablo, O O O by Adrenalin M.O.D. and X by Warrior. I used Guinnes Hit Singles 17, so there's probably more in the 76-100 section 1983-2003, and others from 2004 onwards.
