Updated! Only MITAM remains in this week's top 200 out of 1D's albums but I've got a new total for Take Me Home too.

Niall has reached 60k and a silver certification as mentioned above, and Fine Line's officially spent a full consecutive year in the top 40 albums!

Updated! Fine Line jumps to #15 this week thanks to the anniversary vinyl boxset :D Sadly HS1 dips out of the top 100 for the first time in ages though.

Take Me Home overtakes Made in the A.M. to be the top 1D album again, though they're the only two in the top 200.

Updated for the past few weeks! We have sales again for the latter four One Direction albums and confirmation of Midnight Memories passing 1m :D

The big story this week is Fine Line finally reaching a new peak of #2! It spends a 56th consecutive week in the top 40, slowly trundling to the record for that, while it's wiped the floor with the record for most weeks top 10 - 43 to Take Me Home's 10.

Well done Midnight Memories *.*

A new total for Niall Horan - Heartbreak Weather: 62,642 as of 1st January 2021

Nice to see he has at least gone silver a shame he couldn’t / didn’t really do a proper campaign for this album. I’m sure I’ll get round to purchasing it at some point his first one was ok.

Updated! MITAM and Take Me Home are closely battling for the top 1D album - they're side by side in the top 200 for the second week in a row and MITAM is marginally ahead

Heartbreak Weather's back in the top 200 so we have a new total again for that. Fine Line's inching its way to 400k, should be there within the next couple of months.

Next week, we'll see where Zayn will chart - dramatically higher than #77 I expect even if it's on similar sales...!

Updated! Some interesting observations this week:

MITAM has gone from being the top 1D album to only the third most popular this week - Take Me Home is first and FOUR moves into second! Midnight Memories fourth and Up All Night last, sadly that one still hasn't re-entered the chart other than for the anniversary last year.

Nobody Is Listening enters at #17, selling 400 copies more than Icarus Falls managed (and obviously peaking 60 places higher...!). We also have a new figure for Icarus Falls - 34,381! In the list below, that puts it above Walls, but the Walls figure is a little outdated now so I'd expect that's still actually sold more than Icarus Falls. Nonetheless, considering its peak, that's actually not such a bad total.

By opening week sales

237,338 Midnight Memories [01]

155,316 Take Me Home [01]

141,780 FOUR [01]

138,631 Up All Night [02]

093,189 Made In the A.M. [01]

056,630 Harry Styles [01]

049,082 Fine Line [03*]

022,703 Flicker [03]

022,250 Mind of Mine [01]

014,729 Walls [04]

014,300 Heartbreak Weather [01]

009,910 LP1 [17]

003,442 Nobody Is Listening [17]

003,043 Icarus Falls [77]

* Fine Line debuted at #3 but went on to peak at #2.

By total sales

1,177,700 Up All Night [02]

1,144,500 Take Me Home [01]

1,006,200 Midnight Memories [01]

0,734,300 FOUR [01]

0,576,600 Made In the A.M. [01]

0,378,700 Fine Line [02]

0,321,300 Harry Styles [01]

0,100,000 Flicker [03]

0,100,000 Mind of Mine [01]

0,065,100 Heartbreak Weather [01]

0,044,694 LP1 [17]

0,034,318 Icarus Falls [77]

0,032,981 Walls [04]

0,003,442 Nobody Is Listening [17]

Niall hasn't done that bad really when you consider the lack of promotion and not having a real hit, if he'd been able to do a proper promo trail or had a song take off I'm sure the sales would be much closer to 100k. A shame Nice to meet ya didn't take off properly it's one of the better One Direction solo songs.

Also over 30k for Zayn is impressive with that peak I mean Melanie C peaked at #8 but there's no way she will achieve these sales, hell even Madonna peaked at #2 and was somewhere round these sales for her last album.

Zayn has the advantage of having a large streaming audience, so Icarus Falls is likely adding 200-300 sales a week, even though its pure sales were atrocious. 200 a week would provide Icarus Falls with over 10k sales a year. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if 90% of Zayn’s album total is thanks to streams.

It’s the same scenario with the other 1D solo albums. LP1 was quite a disaster on arrival, but nevertheless it’s probably getting very close to 60,000/Silver. I’m fairly confident it must have exceeded 55,000 now!

Sadly Melanie C would never be able to consistently add hundreds of sales a week to her total like 1D soloists, she’s always destined to be front loaded with pure sales which can’t be sustained! Conversely to Zayn her total is probably 90% pure sales. Madonna - Madame X sold 50k by the end of 2019, but she also suffers from relatively bad streaming for her modern music. It’ll reach silver eventually though.

By the way, I’m still mildly bewildered that some of the 1D albums have been adding ~1k a week to their totals for the past 10 months or so, given that their albums had little to no chart presence in 2016-19. I don’t get what caused their old albums to suddenly explode on streaming. Take Me Home was #110 last Friday with 1,207 sales; 1,076 of it was streaming. It achieves similar numbers week after week. I don’t get it.

I wonder if Harry's solo success has been a contributing factor? It makes sense to me that their albums would be constant presences as all five were huge (poor Up All Night barely getting a look in though ), and their fanbase is very much today's streaming generation, but Harry could well have boosted the interest, much like HS1 hanging around consistently in the top 100 nowadays!

Up All Night always being conspicuously absent from the chart is another strange detail that leads me to question the streaming sales of their other albums, particularly Take Me Home, which almost always seems to lead the way! The consistency of their 2nd-5th albums having a constant presence in the Top 200 is what I find most bizarre, particularly because none of these albums were rinsed for singles (for that reason it’s more understandable to me that albums like Teenage Dream, The Fame and Good Girl Gone Bad are always lurking). If I remember rightly the 1D albums didn’t re-emerge until hype about their impending 10 year anniversary started to gain traction, a little way into 2020, and since then the albums have not waned at all

I know I should stop dwelling on the overall messiness of the album chart considering it’s unlikely to change any time soon  I find the eternal presence of various Greatest Hits albums in the Top 40 relatively more annoying than 1D albums :heehee:

Rush posted an analysis around the time of the 1D anniversary celebrations which helped me make sense of the Up All Night situation!

^ I saw this post and thought you might be interested in some Spotify figures since I have relevant data on hand (honestly I'd have expected someone in this forum would be keeping track but seemingly not!). +4,255,604 - total 50,139,216 - Long Way Down

The totals (within the first half of 2020) per album are:

241,567,962 - Made In The A.M.

230,776,242 - Midnight Memories

214,955,527 - Take Me Home

212,094,355 - FOUR

164,546,950 - Up All Night

Counting only the #3-#12 most streamed tracks:

128,814,844 - Made In The A.M.

118,021,637 - FOUR

110,217,164 - Midnight Memories

107,232,996 - Take Me Home

63,763,502 - Up All Night

Which sounds like it reflects the OCC situation pretty well, despite the large potential for variance (due to UK-specific streams, other services etc)! It's probably easiest to visualise the spreads as a graph (the x axis = tracks in order of streams):

RbFuMRL.png

The last 4 albums are all pretty close together, but 'Up All Night' is significantly behind in its #2-#5 tracks, especially #3.

What stands out most in their plays for me is 2 of their albums currently having non-singles as their most played tracks - that's really unusual! My assumption is that they're a rare case where a dedicated fanbase is so large that it can actually overpower the general public, particularly when the competition is songs like 'Little Things' and 'Night Changes' that aren't really huge enduring hits, but it could also just be playlists.

So although none of them were really rinsed for singles, many of the album tracks stream well (notably They Don't Know About Us and 18!) to make up for that, and Up All Night loses out because Gotta Be You obviously isn't that popular and it was effectively disowned by the boys anyway (plus the lack of a global push for that + More Than This), so it may as well have only had two singles and they get rounded down.

Well predicted!

@1355172600402481154

 the timing!

This means that LP1 has managed an average of at least 665 sales a week since 14th August 2020. :o If it continues at that rate (but presumably it’ll slow down a bit as it gets older?) it would be Gold in 60 weeks from now. I feel like it’ll manage Gold no later than 2023 even if we take into account its weekly average slowing down.

Ooh thanks for that Joseph, I don’t think I saw Rush’s post at the time! I’m pretty surprised that Up All Night lags behind quite considerably. They Don’t Know About Us and 18 outdoing actual hits seems quite strange too, even as fan favourites you’d think it would be hard to overpower the hits.

Updated! Nobody Is Listening fell to #136 this week. Three 1D albums are ahead - Take Me Home was #102, just missing out on another top 100 re-entry, and MITAM is back to being their second highest album.
  • Author

Updated! In the fun game of musical chairs, MITAM is 1D's top album again and somewhat comfortably. It was just 51 sales off a top 100 re-entry!

Two, maximum three weeks before Fine Line crosses 400k!

Nobody Is Listening is out of the top 200.
