I don’t understand how the government isn’t working on exact dates. That’s what I am working with on the continent as I’m sure that Tim is as well. I know that the measures are effectively open ended and that the next review date is tomorrow and they’ll decide what happens next now that they’ve been able to start to see the impact on the loosening of restrictions.

In the UK I think this is a very English problem. None of my friends and family in Scotland are having this issue because the messaging from Sturgeon and the Scottish Government is a lot clearer and very consistent. They’ve already said that while the decision is yet to be formally taken it is highly likely that lockdown will continue as they are not confident enough in the R0 to start to allow a phased reopening.

How are Germany handling seeing friends and loved ones right now?

At the moment we’re the same as everywhere else in that we’re strongly advising against contact with the over 70s. The lockdown rules however have always allowed you to be in your household group +1. So I can have a person over to my flat or I can do my outdoor exercise or shopping in a group of two. But it’s designed for short term stays and things. The Berlin police clarified at the start of lockdown during a Q&A that tinder dates were perfectly fine for example. We have strict fines on hosting “tourists” so intra-German travel is still quite restricted as well as travel for people from outside of Germany, so if your loved ones are a few states over then a trip to see them would run against the concept of an essential trip.

I think he’s meaning in terms of it being safe for family to be able to fly over and visit - not zero contact with any family or friends until Oct. Travelling to a different country is obviously different to visiting local people.

Thank you, I meant exactly that!!

France are now saying their coronavirus patient zero was in December.

Does anyone believe this much mentioned second wave is what we’ve just been through and it was a deadlier version than the first wave in December.

Nah, this is still the first wave. It's a highly contagious virus which only takes 1 person to spread. With the combination of asymptomatics and it being a new virus, it was very easy for it to spread early without being noticed

Edit: Yes Silas DATES! I can't believe not everyone works with them. Both NL and BE have been working with dates of "at least till april 1st, etc"

I’m not sure that can be taken as fact when no one knows.

Thanks for letting us know on the friends and family part it is clear then that the UK is pretty strict on this point and it is a sensible idea what is being done in Germany. If the matter is not addressed at the next review people are going to be very angry. As I have noted I haven’t been able to have anyone in my flat since March and if they guidance is not addressed at the next update I will no longer be following the guidance as enough is enough now.

I am from Scotland originally and Nicola Sturgeons guidance is still very unclear long term. She issued a paper two weeks ago which started talking about an exit strategy then has given no dates or clarity since other than now is not the time there is only so long you can continue to tell people this.

No one knows what? That it is highly contagious? That asymptomatics can spread?

I don’t think there will be waves of anger as the majority of people are sufficiently mature to understand what is happening and the reasons for it.

You ain’t special sweetheart, everyone is in this same boat as you. We all want to see family and friends again but we’re making the sacrifice for a short period of time to prevent a far worse outcome.

Sturgeon has a great approach. When the R0 value is sustainable then the people know what the plan is. She’s having a grown up conversation with the people that at the moment the value isn’t sustainable and she ain’t a f***ing psychic so she can’t tell you when that will be. She’s not giving false optimism, just being realistic about what’s happening. That’s the approach I had in Germany and the bulk of people here think that we’re coming out of lockdown too fast now. We all knew time scales were uncertain and that things would just be reviewed regularly on scientific evidence and when the R0 was sustainable we’d be let loose

That this is the first wave. You continue to try and be sarcastic and rude so I am reporting you now.

Very aggressive tone and extremely rude also reported.

Gurl I was literally questioning what you were getting at...

You asked a question, I answered my view on it. Now the fact that that does not fit your narrative is not my fault

What makes you think the first wave died in december so it could return less than 2 weeks later

Gurl 😂😂😂

What makes you think the first wave died in december so it could return less than 2 weeks later

I was asking whether this strain that is going round now is a deadlier second strain. If the virus was in France from December then it may have became deadlier as it took until March for things to start getting very serious.

Stop commenting on every single one of my posts trying to talk down to me and make me look stupid it is pathetic.

You can also edit your post but I have already quoted your original one that didn’t have the additional sentence and was just there to laugh at me so you have been exposed for all to see thankfully.

You make yourself look stupid hun, you don't need any help on that department.

I'll just leave you to it as clearly there is no way to have an actual discussion with you without you resorting to playong a victim of non-existent things

Thanks for exposing... nothing?

I think your posts have proved how childish you actually are so I have nothing more to say.

It was neither but you do you hun.

I thought that patient zero was at least January for most of Europe so it’s not inconceivable that there was a December case that was fairly isolated that marked the beginning of the first wave.

Did you see the NY governor say that the strain in NYC they believed was a more deadly strain from Europe rather than the original strain from China. I’d be very interested to see the science behind that

I wouldnt really call an isolated case a wave tho

There's been several reports of various strains. A B and C.

A was mostly seen in Asia, B in Europe and C in New York. They believe the virus has adapted to the circumstances and genetics of the inhabitants. I'm not sure on the deathlier part, but I believe it is more down to lifestyle (age, obese, air quality) then a deadlier strain.

It might have mutated to a deadlier version, but its impact feels limited as there's still mostly deaths with underlying issues.

It's perfectly plausible for the US strain to come from Europe as New York has so many connections to Europe by air it never was a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN

Yeah sorry I think i was a bit jumbled and unclear in my words and meaning. What I meant to say was that the cases were the beginning of the wave that is still ongoing for us, just before community spread started and when the cases were in the stage of still being able to be tested, traced and isolated.

Thanks for that information!! Really appreciate it. I’m a little bit behind on the science of the virus at the moment, so really interesting to see that it’s adapting to its environment. To me, perhaps incorrectly, that suggests it might be a challenge to develop a vaccination for.

I definitely agree with you that New York being so heavily linked with Europe by air made it inevitable that it would spread there.

Regarding the people in here that don’t watch the news cause it’s “too miserable”... maybe try it? These days at least most stories are about how the amount of deaths is dropping at quite a steady rate or about how we’re going to get out of this mess, so it’s all quite positive.

I read that the virus mutates slowly. It would need a big mutation for a vaccin to not work. Like with the flu, they give you the past 4 years or so which protects you quite a lot already. So with this one, it might take a while for 80% protection as you'd need various strains.

I am not 100% up to date woth the facts either but the flu mutates faster apparantly and that has a worldwide vaccin as well

From a bystander point of view, you have the most aggressive tone around here repeating the same thing all over and trying to justify the fact you're not going to abide by the rules anymore if they don't end this lockdown soon. Like Silas said, you do you so if you think reporting people for having a different opinion and challenging yours (even though Tim was just asking for elaboration) is a fair option then go for it.

It is frustrating there's no clear message but just because the lockdown is slowly getting lifted in some countries doesn't mean it's all over. It's far from over and there are only two outcomes that will make everything return back to normal: 1. people will collectively agree to getting infected and let vulnerable people die or 2. we find a vaccine. I'm willing to sit at home locked up until the vaccine is found, be it a few weeks or months or a year. Everything can be adapted to honestly.
