  • Definitely was hindered by the lack of b-side, but to be honest if they had done the original date, they would have faired better and even go #1... But yes it was the first single to not have a bside

Saturday Night Divas is an underrated bop! Love love love it!!

Still confused that they never release anything but sign off on that terrible Spiceworld anniversary items 😂😂
Pissed me off that they completely ignored Spiceworld The Movie as well.

Stop missing #1 is a crime tbh, it was such a fantastic single and it being the second most streamed Spice Girls single shows how enduring it is! Would have been amazing if they had got 10 consecutive #1s in a row!

Had they saved Walk of life as a b-side for Stop instead, would it have sold more the first week?

I wonder! The track list was definitely lacking so B Sides could in theory have encouraged more sales.

It just being the album version of Stop, rather than creating a Radio Edit, might have been a slight issue. I mean, not that there was really a need for an edit as it's quite short - but maybe a "Single Mix" could have been an incentive?

Maybe it should have included live tracks of hit singles rather than album tracks, if they had to go down the live track route? For that matter, maybe that Stop CD with the live tracks on it should have had different artwork, with imagery from Istanbul. Which is what they did for Viva Forever CD2, the artwork was tour photos.

Tbh I'll always find it a curious choice that they used those pink background photos for Stop, seeing as the photoshoot occurred in May 1997 - making it older than the photos used for Spice Up Your Life and Too Much singles! I wonder why they went back months for this single, rather than using something newer? Although those photos do have a very strong association with Stop regardless, it's just funny really as technically it's a 'Spice' era photo shoot.

But yes it was the first single to not have a bside, which then became the norm for them as all subsequent singles (bar Goodbye!) lacked one as well. Their insistance on live tracks was cute as they wanted to prove they could sing and were a live act. But they should have just done a live album as planned and include more b-sided anyway.

It was so strange that Stop didn't go to #1 as it was everywhere, the choreography is iconic and the song is one of the better known from the 90s!... The press really lapped it up as well that this was confirmation that they were over...

A mistep though that rightly was then proven to be bullshit with the success of Viva Forever, Goodbye and Holler all going in at #1!

I do think a bigger crime is Holler not managing yet to get to Platinum... now THAT is a serious injustice!

I think everything was lacking for Stop for it to stumble the way it was. The artwork being a year old, same album edit, nothing to offer for the actual fans to buy when they already have the album. That was their lowest first week sales (before Holler/ LLLTW replaced it but still went to number one). They had so many iconic photoshoots for Spiceworld but they used older photos for Too Much and Stop singles were really weird choices.

I'm sorry but I dont think the art work is an issue other than for a very small group of rabbid fans... The pink images are ICONIC and really stood out. I don't think most of their fans would have cared back then, same with the Too Much artworks. For a lot of people, they wouldn't even have clocked that these were old photoshoots....

I was already a rabbid fan then and I didn't even know they were old photoshoots until I read it on Denden years later lol

Well, I did because I collected everything back then lol. I wanted new pictures, darn it!

I wonder if Simon had stayed whether Stop would have had a newer photo shoot used for the artwork? Maybe it was cheaper for the girls to use a relatively old shoot for it (in terms of licencing?) thinkingThey're definitely bold/striking pictures and designs, but still a bit lazy to use them lol x

At least the Too Much pictures, although from Elle magazine, were more recent (September 97).

No, I get it, we wanted something new but the vast majority of their fanbase at the time were not us lol

I agree, I was also an obsessive fan and never picked up on them reusing the artwork for Too Much and Stop. I did pick up on the Too Much photos being used for the tour T-shirts though lol.

Harper Seven singing Stop and mixing up the lyrics is cutest thing!
