05. Holy Water

From 'Rebel Heart', Holy Water is one of Madonna's most in your face songs, ever!? Lyrically, the song talks about Madonna's ~private waters~ being compared to holy water and this merging of sexuality and religion has never been so gratuitous. The song released in demo form before the album dropped. It interpolates 'Vogue' during the track's bridge and features the now iconic "bitch get off my pole" lyric *_* The song's inclusion and performance on the Rebel Heart Tour attracted controversy as she re-enacted the Last Supper complete with nuns in hot pants and priests in lingerie. As you do ~

What are your thoughts on this hugely divisive and controversial track from 2015?

The lyrics are deffo CHOICE but they're kind of fun and the production is fab. An underrated fave.
The beat and production is great. Some days I’m into this song and others not. Quite like Mother and Father that also has questionable lyrics .

Agreed, I really like the bubbling beat and production on this one. Certainly better than the demo version!

The lyrics are clearly quite...colourful, but I don't hate them? They're meant to be in-your-face and quite funny, I just don't take it too seriously.

I really enjoyed this at the time but I haven't returned to it much now and it hasn't aged too brilliantly. I think the zany, wacky pop is done much better on Madame X with songs like Dark Ballet and God Control - this pales in comparison to those. It is still great fun though and I love the Vogue parts and of course "bitch get off my pole" is still iconic x

06. Dark Ballet

Taken from Madonna's most recent album, Dark Ballet was a released as a promotional single in the build up to the album's release. The song was written with Mirwais, and it contains a sample from The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It was inspired by Joan of Arc and takes the form of an experimental pop and electro-gospel piano ballad, with the use of vocoder on her vocals. Sonically and lyrically, it is certainly one of her most unique songs...

What are your thoughts on this electro-gospel ballad from 2019?

Love Dark Ballet

So unique and so experimental !!

It’s an album highlight for sure .

What a song  I still don't think I fully "get" it and all of its layers and meaning but it's a super-zany, rollercoaster ride of a song and I am here for it. When I first heard it, I was genuinely agog at what I was hearing  Now the shock has sunk in, I can enjoy it for all of its wackiness.

07. Living For Love

The lead single from Madonna's 13th album, Living For Love is next from the 10s. The song was rush released after a leak surfaced, it showcased a different genre of music to the electro-pop of MDNA. Featuring percussion and piano by Alicia Keys, along with a gospel choir, the song talks of a positive response to negativity that you may face. Very uplifting... this wasn't the case when she performed the song at the BRIT Awards, in a now unforgettable night for her. It didn't cause a huge splash around the world but it did open the era in style, setting up some of the vibes we would expect from the album as a whole.

08. Some Girls

The blaring synthpop of Some Girls was produced by Wiliam Orbit - believe it or not. It is an empowering song, in which Madonna expresses how she is different to many other women. Orbit commented on how it was for her biggest fans, as it showed the connection between Madonna and them off. It began as a light and experimental track, but eventually evolved into the fierce, electronic song we have today.

What are your thoughts on this loud and proud song from 2012?

It’s pretty awful tbh

I cant believe William Orbit who done her best era ever was behind this! MDNA really is the major low point of her discography for me this isn’t even amongst the worst on that album yet it’s still poor.

09. Addicted

Taken from the super deluxe edition of Rebel Heart, Addicted is an electronic stomper. It is about knowing that you are falling in love with a guy who will break your heart but yet you can’t help being attracted to him and at the end, he will leave her alone. The production is loud and abrasive and it demands attention.

What are your thoughts on this banger from 2015?

This is one of the most underrated songs from this era for me. I feel like it's largely ignored because of its inclusion only on the deluxe version :( Worthy enough to be on the standard tracklist in my opinion!

I suppose 'Addicted' would have made the main tracking list if the original productions of Avicii's other songs remained ('Rebel Heart' and 'Wash All Over You', for instance).

I think I liked it more at the time than I do now but it is still a fun, albeit basic, bop. It's like a mash-up of Avicii's own 'You Make Me' and 'Addicted to You'.

10. Future

The second promotional single released from Madame X, Madonna teamed up with Quavo for Future. A reggae song that celebrates the present, contemplates on the past and looks to the future, it was performed at the 2019 Eurovision Awards. In the performance, two dancers were featured with Palestinian and Israeli flags on their costumes; which Madonna used as a political statement for the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

What are your thoughts on this hip-hop number from 2019?

I like Future as an album track.

Should not have even a promo single. Certainly shouldn’t have been performed at Eurovision.

Agree with the latter two points! ^ :kink:

I am.. not huge on this. I admit it has grown slightly over the past year or so, but I find it quite jarring and annoying and would prefer if it wasn't even included on the album. The fact it was given the push it was as a promo single/Eurovision is even more confusing :drama:

I think it's fine but that's about it. I agree that it probably wasn't needed on the album and definitely should not have been performed at Eurovision. Even if it was performed well, it would still be so wrong for Eurovision. 'God Control' was right there!!!

11. I Don't Give A

From MDNA, I Don't Give A with Nicki Minaj is an insight into the life of Madonna. Produced by Martin Solveig, She sings of failed marriages, her career up until that point and her fast, high-octane lifestyle. Nicki raps in the song and concludes it by stating that "There's only one queen and that's Madonna. Bitch!" - never have truer words been spoken.

What are your thoughts on this insightful rap number from 2012?
