Let There Be Love initially stood out to me when The Sea was released. But now I hardly ever play it. It is pleasant but this would rank low for me. I do need to go to the Brighton filming location :)

I see why this was released in Germany however Burn and Stupid Game were better choices.

Yes I think that's Let there be love's issue - Stupid Game and Burn were screaming to be released, especially in the G/S/A places where it could have actually been a hit. I don't think either would have been a big hit tbf if Think About It couldn't smash I don't think anything would have for her at that point.

I'll revisit Let There Be Love soon... have to admit that I've barely listened to it since 2011!

5 I Turn to You

I've mentioned this before, but if I were compiling this list on what songs are objectively Melanie's best, I'd probably place this one at #1. It's so different to any of her singles, particularly in remix form. It's lyrically strong, the chorus is brilliantly memorable, and that production! I love how varied the Northern Star singles were. This feels like a classic track, so why is it not my #1 too? I simply revisit the other four a bit more often than this. It's well-worthy of its status, though

I Turn to You is my personal favourite  Glad it's made the Top 5 for you! Such a classic, very of its time of course but I like that a listen of this transports me right back to summer 2000. And it gave her a properly "solo" #1 too!

I can never decide if i prefer ITTY or NBTSA .

Right now ITTY is winning. It’s my boyfriends fav Melanie C song and I sing it to my Mum haha

I love I turn to you, it's always one of the last tracks at every party I have (or my wedding lol) and everyone is always up dancing to it, I've made lots of my family love the song partly due to this

4 First Day of My Life

I find this such an interesting moment of Melanie's career - not on the original edition of Beautiful Intentions, but released as the third single in some territories only. What interests me in particular is that it was released in places she hadn't had a substantial hit in for quite a while, yet it didn't get a UK release despite it being the only place Next Best Superstar went top 10 in! Somehow, it became a huge European hit, and rightfully so, it's an absolutely beautiful song. Striking, powerful and well-deserving of its hit status. So...why was it only ever a b-side to a single from the next era (!) in the UK??? :(

First Day Of My Life was huge because it was attached to a soap opera . Therefore it got huge promo. Enrique Iglesias wrote it. I think the song is lovely . Lyrically it means a lot to me and it’s a moment when performed live !! I’m not sure it would have done much if released here . It was on the beside to Carolyna.

I find it interesting that they didn't even bother to push it here though! You'd think, seeing such a huge response in Europe would maybe convince her to give it a try here. At worst, it probably would've been another top 20 to her name! I guess she didn't think it was worth it after cancelling Better Alone's UK push?
The UK push for Better Alone was before FDOML (and she actually withdrew the single from charting eligibility)... It's a shame she didn't get a push with FDOML but I think it had something to do with her European record label. She recorded it for them and I think they had some sort of ownership over it so she couldn't release it on her own label, apparently Warner didn't think it would get a good response from the UK so decided not to proceed with it. The fact it got quite a lot of radio support and was a sizable hit in the UK though could have potentially got her some UK radio support that she wasn't really receiving. If I want candy managed to get to #24 then I'm pretty sure FDOML would have managed a top 20 position at worst at the time.

Warner have / had NO ownership over First Day of My Life. The master is owned by Red Girl Records. Melanie could release it anywhere she wanted to.

She actually considered a UK release, but decided against it.

Here is a quote from 2006, taken from an interview to the Aussie media:

"Beautiful Intentions has been such a slow build everywhere, releasing in different times in different territories on different labels. It feels like the never-ending album. It's outsold my second album, and I think that's quite an achievement considering that was on a major label worldwide. I'm actually contemplating re-releasing the album in the UK. It'd be interesting to

see how "First Day Of My Life" goes here."

She should have tried it! I think it had the potential to do something here in the UK.
That's a shame, she did say in her recent Q&A about Warner not thinking it would do anything in the UK. Wish she had released it could have helped push the album over 30k, if she re-released then even more.

Im not surprised. Whilst First Day of My Life did well across the Europe, the context of the UK is, sadly, very different. I never thought it was a good enough single, personally, to warrent a non-TV advert single campaign.

It would have flopped in the UK quite badly.

Better Alone being cancelled was a terrible mistake, personally. It signalled she had no confidence at all in her own work, so why would the industry bother to look into it? After such a single like Next Best Superstar where she criticised the whole industry, move forward with another single about the industry (record company) and then cancelling because it wasnt doing the numbers she wanted, it's no surprise that no1 gave a crap about her work after that.

It took her quite a long time to regain respect in the UK. Good on her though for sticking it through...
