So inspired by remembering old songs in the End of Year rates in this forum, and hearing some songs I'd not heard for ages in AF Idol I started wondering about other songs I've allowed myself to forget. So I've been through my Personal Chart Archive, old End of Year Charts and votes from the 2000-03 heats in this forum to put together a Spotify playlist of songs I clearly enjoyed at the time but don't have either an mp3 of or on an existing playlist. They're all either top 10 (or almost) personal chart hits, end of year top 60 entries or songs I thought good enough to vote for. I've not heard any of these for years so thought I'd re-visit them to see if I've missed any gems or I've been completely right to have forgotten their existence. The songs will appear in random order roughly based on how they came in my shuffle playlist. There's quite a lot of big pop chart hits that will appear as well as some really unknown songs. Some of these I have zero recollection of.

I'm not doing this on the expectation of people following it, but thought it would be good to record my thoughts somewhere, so will post a short bit about each song and rate out of 10, as well as its reason for inclusion (chart run etc.). I aim to post a few songs each day and continue until either I've finished, get bored or life gets back to normal after lockdown and don't have the time.

It's hard to imagine this starting with a better song. I do have a decent memory of this one and surprised I've culled it from my collection. It's a lovely song, very Damien Rice-esque. 8/10

From the sublime to the ridiculous. I assume the 15 year old me found this funny in some way, but this is certainly never getting listened to again. I'm sure this will be a low point in this playlist 2/10

, 2002 (#42 EOY)

A moderate UK hit from 2002 I don't really recall. This is a nice enough dancey track but I was bored by the end, I suspect I'd have enjoyed a radio edit more. 5.5/10

, 2002 (#36 EOY)

This is excellent, a big hit at the time but not something I've heard in years, very much enjoyed hearing it again. 7/10

, 2006 (10-25)

I have zero recollection of this song and no idea who or what Protokoll is, its 10-25-OUT chart run clearly a sign it didn't make a lasting impression. This is a decent enough indie song I'm sure will give a few more listens to. 7/10

, 2006 (09-27)

I've kept, and still listen to, some of the Kooks early songs but this is definitely weaker than all of those. 5/10

, 2004 (12-15-16-18-23-27-28-30-34-37)

A top 10 dance hit from 2004, I must have liked it for a while at the time I can't say I wish to hear again, plenty of similar stuff from that era that stands up far better. 3/10

Be Good Or Be Gone is one of my favourites, it’s absolutely timeless and just a lovely song. I play it regularly still
The only one from that first batch that I remember is Ooh La which is, as you say, far from The Kooks' best. It's OK, but not much better than just OK.
Is Protokoll the same as Protocol from that time? Apparently the latter made #1 for me and I have no idea how it goes!

It is very good, entirely possible that I'd have discovered it from you posting about it somewhere.

Yeah it's fine but definitely the weakest of those singles from their debut.

I charted a 'Where's The Pleasure' from Protocol in 2006 which I also don't recall, they've got separate Spotify entries so doesn't look like it's the same band.

That’s the one that got to #1 for me. I recall it being like a weak killers or bravery style of sound.

I have no recollection of this song, it's nice enough but won't be added to my list of Manics songs I'll keep listening to. Must be one of the least remembered UK #2 hits 5/10

, 2004 (09-14-15-19-21-22-24-28-39)

I remember liking a few of his songs but haven't heard any since around the time they were out. This was not as enjoyable as I was expecting it to be. 4/10

, 2002 (#37, EOY)

This was quite a nice song from featuring Robbie Williams and Maxi Jazz of Faithless, I definitely loved it at the time and still good now. 7/10

, 2006 (12-17-31-35)

Captain just missed out on my mid-tier indie band countdown in April with 'Broke' which I still enjoy. I have less recollection of this but it's also a good of indie pop. 7/10

Given the criteria, there are a lot of songs that are in no way forgotten, either by me or generally, but I deleted my copy of this some time ago. It was great, and was everywhere for a long time, but that ended up being its main problem as I think I've now heard it too many times to be enjoyable. 5/10

, 2001 (Heat voting, 8 pts)

The memory of this was far better than the reality. Like many who were entering their teenage years at this time, I was into a lot of this type of music around this time but most of it stayed in the early 00s and I listen to very little of it. If I'd listened to the tracks on offer before voting this would have got significantly fewer points. 4/10

, 2004 (04-06-09-10-16-19-28-37)

As above, although this is significantly better now. I've no real desire to listen to any Offspring songs in 2020 though. 6/10

'Your Game' was the first Will Young song I remember liking (I didn't have time for 'Leave Right Now' back then) but one even more forgotten song of his which is one of my favourites is 'Who Am I'.

I remember Hit That from 50/50. It was my introduction to the band.

My Culture, Addicted To Bass and Days Go By are probably my favourites from this countdown so far

I charted 6 of his songs in 2004-6 but LRN is the only one I'd remember, there's another in here to come.

Thanks for commenting, Hit That was better than I was expecting an Offspring song to be. I only really remember Pretty Fly and Why Don't You Get a Job which are no where near as good.

I did think this was great at the time but had tired of it somewhat, along with some other Rihanna songs through overplaying. But the break has been kind, have enjoyed this as much as I used to. 8/10

, 2004 (01-01-01-04-05-05-05-04-07-14-19-23-26-30-34)

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I obviously loved it loads at the time but did tire very quickly of U2, both their music of that time and older stuff. 7/10

, 2004 (10-11-13-12-13-16-23-26-27-30-37)

I haven't heard anything by Natasha for a hell of a long time and wasn't enthusiastic as her name kept cropping up into this list, but this is still a decent enjoyable pop song. 6/10

, 2003 (Heat voting, 4pts)

He may have become a bit of a parody over time and released some complete dross, but this is a genuinely excellent track from this era that still sounds absolutely great. The song I've most enjoyed listening to so far. 9/10

, 2002 (Heat voting, 4pts)

I enjoyed this more than I than I expected but was a bit bored by the end. 5/10

, 2004 (06-13-18-22-30-33)

I still listen to their 2002 singles with varying degrees of regularity but don't recall their later material at all. They were decent for an early 00s indie band, this is ok but not a patch on earlier songs. 5.5/10

, 2007 (30-30-19-06-13-20-30)

A rather poignant song about someone dying at the battle of Passchendaele at WWI. It's more uplifting than that sounds, if I followed up my previous countdown with a best 'low tier' indie songs this would have to be up there 7/10

It's been a while since I've listened to any Sugababes but they did have some decent songs back in the day. This is still a great pop song, one of the best girlband songs. 8/10

, 2002 (EOY #56)

Well this is not what I expected, and not in good way. I still listen to Faster Kill Pussycat from time-to-time so was hoping for something similar, but this features the singer from Crazy Town and isn't that far away from them or someone equally dire like Smash Mouth. 2/10

, 2005 (12-20-26-38)

This is decent. It is slightly annoying but still I liked it more than I thought I would. She would often go from songs I really liked to ones I absolutely hated. 6/10

, 2005 (11-21-30-31-407.5

I still listen to some older Kano songs and his album last year is great, but don't recall this one. It's very good, as I expected it to be. 7.5/10

, 2002 (EOY #38)

Ahh it's been a while since I heard this. The first, and only, big hit for them. I loved it at the time and is still good now. 7/10

, 2007 (25-16-07-01-03-10-18-31)

The second (of I think 3) personal chart number ones that I don't have a copy of. I quite liked Air Traffic in the 2006-07 world of small indie bands, this quickly went up and back down in my affections (8 weeks total is pretty dire) and it's just ok, their other singles were all better. 5/10

, 2009 (18-14-09-07-08-08-10-19-34)

I got quite into VV Brown's album but slowly tired of it over the next few years. I still LOVE Crying Blood but that and Faith are the only songs I've kept. This is nice enough byt nothing more. 5/10

, 2000 (Heat voting, 16pts)

Definitely will be one of the best songs in this playlist. Their two big hits were both great, UK garage was often excellent at the turn of the century. I've no idea why this hasn't continued to be something I've regularly listened to since. 8/10

Unfortunately the second part of what I listened to today was significantly worse than this section.

Beastie Boys - An Open Letter To N.Y.C., 2004 (06-09-11-12-18-29-39)

I'm not really familiar with much of their work and this isn't something I recall at all. Probably the weakest song of theirs I've heard - not something to revisit. 4/10

R.E.M. - Supernatural Superserious, 2008 (20-09-07-13-26-38)

This is incredibly boring. I can just about recall it after hearing it. One of their weakest. 3/10

Damien Marley feat. Bobby Brown - Beautiful, 2006 (10-14-19-32-33)

This is incredibly dull and forgettable. 4/10

Lady Gaga - Poker Face, 2009 (30-21-12-06-13-18-21-22-26-32)

I've not listened to most of her songs that I used to listen to a lot for quite some time now, just because I got a little tired of them. I was sort of expecting to enjoy it more after a long period without hearing it, it's still decent but probably 4-5 others of hers I'd prefer to listen to now. 7/10

Babyshambles - Albion, 2005 (09-17-25-28-29-31-39)

Babyshambles did have a couple of good songs. This isn't one of them. 4/10

Robbie Williams - Radio, 2004 (10-12-21-32)

This close to being the worst thing I've listened to in this playlist so far. Rudebox might have got all the criticism but having heard both recently, this has far fewer redeeming features. 2/10

Lenny Kravitz - California, 2004 (08-13-18-20-27-37)

This is pleasant enough but nothing more really. 5.5/10

Couldn't be bothered to link this lot as it was such a dire selection!

On paper, there was nothing about this song that remotely appealed to me at all. I'd hated her previous solo songs and it's just not a style of song I'd ever usually like, yet I thought this was great. Not only that, but I loved listening to this again yesterday. Absolutely the definition of a forgotten gem *.* 8/10

, 2004 (04-05-07-06-07-10-12-16-17-22-32-38)

I've lost all familiarity of anything by the Zutons over the last decade, so there's quite a bit of theirs in this playlist. I'll be delighted if I enjoy the ret of them as much as this. 7/10

, 2006 (04-06-11-21-24-33)

This isn't something I really recall, or something I'd be in a rush to hear again. Reasonably quirky rock music that I can see why I liked at the time. 5/10

, 2003 (EOY #51)

This is decent enough and certainly one of his better songs, but it pales in comparison to Get Busy. 6/10

, 2004 (05-12-15-16-16-20-23-27-35-38)

A nice enough song, but this is the one of the singles from their debut I haven't continued to listen to over the next 15 years. 6/10

, 2005 (11-11-10-12-15-25-31-40)

I've a few of Roots Manuva's songs and it's rare I don't like his songs as I really enjoy his style of rap. No recollection of this whatsoever. Decent enough, but he does have plenty better. 6/10

, 2006 (06-11-15-13-12-15-13-17-30-32-34-36)

My liking of Louis XIV was quite brief, their album with plenty of risque lyrics funny enough for a bit but tired of it easily. It was nice to hear this again though. 6/10

Pleased to see the high score for Fergalicious, it's still an absolute jam!!

Another batch of dross now, this playlist has liked to shuffle in streaks of good/weak stuff...

OK Go - Get Over It, 2003 (EOY #59)

I've no recollection of this song and not fussed about listening again, sounds far more like generic rock music than the other song of theirs anyone knows in 'Here It Goes Again'. 4/10

Dirty Pretty Things - Bang Bang You're Dead, 2006 (05-11-17-18-26-33)

As Pete Doherty moved onto Babyshambles, Carl Barat . I wanted to like both so much, but in reality neither were much cop and this didn't last long in my affections. 4/10

Morrissey - You Have Killed Me, 2006 (08-18-35)

The stuff he came back with in 2004 was pretty decent and I'd still listen to ocasionally now, although it has got harder to like anything of his over the years. This is much more boring though. 3/10

McFly - All About You, 2005 (06-12-18-18-21-25-32-36)

If I hadn't listened to this again I'd continue to rank it much higher. I always thought it was their best song but I found that quite annoying. 3/10

Marilyn Manson - Personal Jesus, 2004 (05-06-11-17-23-26-35-39)

These covers were nice at the time but not now thanks. The other still to come which I have fonder memories of but we shall see... 4/10

Massive Attack - Live With Me, 2006 (18-18-06-08-11-18-18-26-33-36)

The majority of their best of 'Collected' has stayed in my collection but not this, and I can see why. Quite forgettable and nowhere near what they're capable of. 5/10

Snoop Dogg feat. Justin Timberlake - Signs, 2005 (07-09-17-18-26-29-34)

I've decent memories of this song and it is decent but I can't say I'm in a rush to hear again, it's big on JT and most of his songs are better. 5.5/10

Its been a long while since I listened to any Destiny's Child. This was never one of my favourites of theirs but still decent. 7/10

I expected to like this more than I did. It's ok I guess but nothing I'd want to go back to. 5/10

I adored this at the time. It did begin to annoy me over time but great to be reminded of it. 8/10

, 2002 (Heat voting, 9pts)

Girls Aloud have always been very hit and miss for me. Some of their best regarded songs I always hated (hello Biology and Something Kinda Oooh), but they had 6 or 7 I thought were great, including this. 7/10

, 2000 (Heat voting, 11pts)

I was obsessed with Craig David as a kid, and he was the first person I ever saw live. There was then a 16 year gap before seeing him again in 2017 and 2018! His early stuff is still good, but he has better big hits. 6/10

Rui Da Silva feat. Cassandra - Touch Me, 2001 (Heat Voting, 7pts)

Oh this is great. There were some brilliant big dance hits at the turn of the century - plenty I still listen to but let this one slip off my radar. 8/10

Nizlopi - JCB, 2005 (05-12-15-18-22-25-34)

I didn't include this initially before going back telling myself that no, I needed to listen to everything that qualified. But I could only take 30 seconds or so. What may have been funny to a teenager is just unlistenable novelty tosh now.

, 2001

I remembered this as a higher tempo, more dancey song than it is. It's not bad, think I'll prefer the other version, I included it as I wanted to listen to both again. 5.5/10

I don't listen to anything of theirs anymore but this was probably my favourite of them and if I had to pick something of theirs to listen to it probably would be this though, it's still decent enough. 6/10

, 2005 (08-14-19-23-27-35)

I vaguely remember these as being a metal band that managed to reach the UK top 40 on a couple of occasions, so am surprised they have a couple of songs in here. This is ok for what it is but not my thing at all. 5/10

, 2005 (04-09-08-10-11-13-18-20-26-39)

This is ok but I remember it being better than this, still comfortably the best of his later work though. 6/10

The Rumble Strips - Time, 2007 (38-27-18-08-05-08-17-32)

An indie band with a fairly unique style that I enjoyed enough to buy their album but that was probably a bit too much. This is still good though - their singles all were and not sure why I've not still got this. 7/10

This was always my favourite of theirs and listening again still is. 8/10
