Posted June 19, 20205 yr t1DWBKk5xHQ Today marks 20 years since Kylie released 'Spinning Around', the lead single to her seventh studio album Light Years. A return to her signature dance-pop style, 'Spinning Around' deals with reinvention, learning from past mistakes and finding your comfort zone - a tongue-n-cheek nod to the turbulent Impossible Princess era. The song was an instant hit around the world, topping the charts in the UK and Australia, and was hailed as a commercial comeback. Its nightclub music video reinforced Kylie's return to the dancefloor and her cheeky gold hotpants caused a media frenzy, securing the single's placement as one of the greatest in pop culture. 20 years on, what are your thoughts and memories on the song and its music video?
June 19, 20205 yr Really like SA Feel good tune that I prefer now than at time of release. I find the main guy in the video very attractive !!
June 19, 20205 yr This song was actually why I became such a big fan of Kylie. I borrowed the NOW 3 compilation album (Portuguese run) from a friend and it this was among the songs. I thought it sounded super catchy even if I already knew the song from my evenings in front of MTV and VH1. I had OANLT, Kids and PS also in high regard and asked my mum to buy me 'Light Years' when I saw it at a store near home. She did and I was OBSESSED! To this day she claims she had no idea I was gay, even thought I blasted 'Koocachoo' and 'Loveboat' to the whole neighbourhood, singing and dancing like I was on a stage! A couple months later I saw Studio 99's 'A Tribute to Kylie' selling cheap in a supermarket and asked my mum for it and that opened up a whole world of Kylie classics for me. I had recognized most of her super hits, but especially 'Put Yourself in My Place' which I remembered from those very early morning TV Shop compilation albums. After that she came out with CGYOOMH and it firmly cemented her as my favourite artist ever! 20 years on I'm still here! <3
June 19, 20205 yr While it's far from my fave kylie song it's from my fave kylie era.As a fan throughout the previous good and then career low times I absolutely loved every second of the comeback. It made her chart experiences so exciting and that midweek chart for spinning around was such a week. It was also great to see kykie constantly dominating the press aswell at this time.
June 19, 20205 yr Author 'Spinning Around' will have been one of the first Kylie songs I heard, maybe even the first! The joyful nature of the song and the dancing in the music video was so appealing as a child of like 4 and my love for Kylie's music just grew from there. It's easily Top 10 of my favourite Kylie singles. Deservedly a Kylie classic and showed how bang on trend Kylie can be, with many songs from and around Summer 2000 having disco influences ('Rock DJ', 'I'm Outta Love', 'Groovejet', 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)'. This song was actually why I became such a big fan of Kylie. I borrowed the NOW 3 compilation album (Portuguese run) from a friend and it this was among the songs. My memories of the album are still vivid today and I think of them every time I play the album. Definitely holds a special place in my heart.
June 19, 20205 yr Author A montage of the 'Spinning Around' performances: 8NMnlpdHWUo Her image from the Body Language era is so underrated! Huffington Post have published an interview with the song's producer Mike Spencer as part of the 20th anniversary: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/kyli...5b6946974a7d564
June 20, 20205 yr It's never been a big favourite of mine, but I was really digging it yesterday for the 20th anniversary.
June 20, 20205 yr The montage is glorious and the editing has brought the song up a level which works tremendously for Spinning Around as it moves at a faster pace. Light Years 20th anniversary edition needs to happen. The album is a momentous time in Kylie's career.
June 20, 20205 yr I've said for ages I'd love a 20th anniversary light years but I think it would be rumoured by now if it was happening. We all know that re issuing an album like light years has loads of extras to offer. I'm loving this version of spinning around I've played it loads today and it's really got me liking spinning around as I dont usually listen to it that much.
June 20, 20205 yr This song (and video) is absolutely iconic. It introduced me to Kylie when I was a wee 11 year old and remains one of my favourites. I remember this being on CD:UK during the item where they critiqued new releases and one of the celebs said "it's nice to have Kylie back" and poor naive little me was like "who is she??" June 21, 20205 yr Spinning Around introduced a whole new world of Kylie fans. Many who became fans at that point had yet to discover her material prior to its release.
June 21, 20205 yr I have great memories of this single campaign. It was a glorious summer in the UK and I was just beginning to find myself as a gay person. It really brought Kylie back to me in a way that I wasn't expecting. It seemed Kylie was making a big effort to give her fans something they that would absolutely love. I felt like she was really embracing us with 'Spinning Around'. And she hasn't stopped since. She's such a generous artist and we're very lucky. I also think she timed her comeback perfectly. The Spice Girls were pretty much fizzled out by 2000 and the pop landscape was primed for a new, slightly elevated, style of pop. Incidentally, in terms of embracing their fans, I see a similarity in what Melanie C is doing for her Spice fans at the moment - only on a much smaller scale obviously.
June 21, 20205 yr It's a shame mel c just cant get the same connection as kylie, I know it would never hit those levels but mel has done some great singles that do nothing and her last couple of albums have been 1 week wonders in the uk. Hopefully her new album does ok for her. Ya spinning around was perfect timing for kylie and everything just worked and there was a real buzz about kylie and for the first time in a while everyone was willing on kylie to do well.
June 21, 20205 yr Spinning Around was the very first Kylie song I ever heard and I absolutely hated it, as a nine years old boy. I don't even know why, but I thought she was very annoying and always used to dislike when the video came on the telly. I did like OONLT and became a full Kylie fan when she released CCYOOMH, so silly me was just being totally wrong. I absolutely love the song now though, a real Kylie classic.
