02. I Don't Search I Find ~ 9.88

There's no rest for us in this world

Narrowly missing out on the top spot, but coming in a very respectable second, it's 'I Don't Search I Find', the EDM/house inspired club banger that sounds straight out of the Confessions on a Dancefloor rule book. It was released to Italian radio as the fourth single from the album and had two remix EPs released to coincide with this. The song became Madonna's record-breaking seminal 50th #1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. The song came from the dream team of Madonna and Mirwais who worked together to write and produce the track and the title comes from a quote by Pablo Picasso. The song is about finding the beauty within others and it does so with intoxicating magestic sounds, vocals and beats.

01. God Control ~ 9.92

Everybody knows the damn truth

With an exceptional, near-perfect score, the winner of the 2020 Madame X rate is the controversial, show-stopping, dancefloor masterpiece that is 'God Control'. Written and produced with Mirwais and Mike Dean, the song is about gun control and the political climate of the United States at the time of the album's release. It explores how the world is losing control of the truth, and even though we know what is right and wrong, the political leaders are preventing peace from prevailing because of the laws in place. One of the boldest songs Madonna has ever created, it also came packaged with one of the most controversial music videos she has ever made. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Madonna and alter-ego Madame X try to survive and dance through the horrors of a night club shooting while trying to make the world aware of the atrocities around them. It is reminiscent of the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting and as a result, was criticized by the media and the survivors of the massacre, while being praised by some gun control advocates. It's a difficult watch buit beneath the horror of what occurs, there is a burning desire for political change that Madonna adovocates. Controversial and striking, it is the Madonna we love and admire and the song rightfully takes its place as your favourite song from the 14th era.

The correct top 2!

They could’ve been in any order for me but I actually think I Don’t Search I Find has edged ahead now but what a winner!

God Control was her best video since Hung Up for me and a real return to form visually for her! Both the top 2 songs are leagues ahead of anything else she’s done post confessions for me but what a great countdown this was.

Madame X is an underrated piece of work but one that I think was a big step up for her! Who else in the game though would still be capable of releasing something still so bold and controversial for their 14th studio album. Legends only.

'Crave' aside, it's the correct top 2 and I know how much love the two have received since the album's release so it's fitting. 'God Control' is my preferred choice of winner of the two so it's a great result on the whole for me. Both songs are wildly different and just work expertly through their combinations of sound, style, lyrics and production. Madonna at her finest decades into her career - there really is no one that has managed to do it for so long like her.

Those averages for the top two! I prefer 'I Don't Search I Find' nowadays but 'God Control' was my favourite initially so I'd have been happy with either result. I don't think I thought Madonna was still capable of creating something of the standard of 'God Control', both musically and visually, but damn did she prove me wrong. The moment the strings kick in and you dive into that trip of swirling disco synths is life-affirming. The video even now is an incredibly tough watch, but it needs to be to encourage change and remind people of the reality - it's not just 'another' news story.

'I Don't Search I Find' is like a blend of Confessions and the early 90s - two Madonna eras that fans are particularly fond of - so it easily took a place firmly in my heart. One of the many possible single choices on Madame X - why was 'Medellin' the only one to get a proper push?!
