Ghetto Supastar is awful. I was making a playlist over the Summer of 90s tracks and I took a listen as I remembered quite liking it but it really has aged badly - I didn't realise there was a Knightrider sample!

2nd place - B*Witched - C'est la Vie

6.5

B*Witched are to the top 10 of 1998 what the Beatles are to pop music - that's how important this song is.

This counts as "world music", doesn't it?

Ghetto Superstar samples Knight Rider? I thought it sampled Islands in the Stream and Fire It Up sampled Knight Rider?

All this previously unknown Knight Rider-ness!

It appears that I was wrong. I blame Boyzone, et al. I was very sleepy.

1st place - Cher - Believe

7.4

It couldn't really have been anything else.

Believe is very good but it's still the lowest scoring 1st place of the decade.

Comment on 1998 - In a year that I hold up as a great year for singles and albums, the public seemed to have different ideas and parted with their cash for a steaming pile of odious bilge. :arrr:

10th place - Mr Oizo - Flat Beat

It's really, really difficult choosing between this and 9th place. Both are definitely among the worst things I have ever had the misfortune of hearing.

Mr Blobby, where are you? Come back! I miss you.

The Millennium bug was more appealing.

In most other years even 10th place would be too good for it.

1998 is looking pretty decent now. Isn't it? :banghead:

Flat Beat isn't that bad! Certainly not worse than Cliff!!

Plus, if I recall correctly, Mr Oizo prevented that hideous Fast Food Song getting to number one.

6th place - Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca

It's a headache in song form, but gets points for the magnificent pre-chorus and the twangy guitar.

I lied, it was the Cartoons instead :drama:

Do you mean this?

5th place - Shanks & Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate

Wow. This is, like, actual music. My ears are claiming refugee status from the bottom half of this top 10.

Most of the points go to the bit at the start that Daniel Bedingfield stole for Gotta Get Thru This.

There's nothing worse in this entire thread (or maybe anywhere ever) than The Millennium Prayer.

I love 1998 but it's crazy how saccharine ballad heavy it was, in a fashion that was never really seen before or repeated since. It seemed like there was space in the top 10 every week of the year for at least two or three string-laden ballads.

1999 was more varied and certainly more uptempo than 1998, looks like Eiffel 65 and ATB have both done well here, which is great, as they are both brilliant.

4th place - ATB - 9PM "Till I Come"

Now this is more like it. I remember the first time I heard it. It screamed "Summer anthem!".

In the year that trance went mainstream this appeared on a record number of dance compilations, which were going though a very bountiful period themselves, meaning that this song appeared on more sales units (either album or single) than any other song. Ever! [citation needed]

I gotta spend some time with these final 3 songs. It's a very close contest.
