The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. MacGowan left the band in 1991 due to drinking problems but the band continued first with Joe Strummer and then with Spider Stacy on vocals before breaking up in 1996. The band reformed in late 2001, and has been playing regularly ever since, most notably on the US East Coast around St Patrick's Day and across the UK and Ireland every December. The group has yet to record any new music and, according to Spider Stacy on Pogues.com, has no inclination to do so. Their politically tinged music was informed by MacGowan and Stacy's punk backgrounds, yet used traditional Irish instruments such as the tin whistle, cittern, mandolin and accordion. The Pogues were founded in Kings Cross, a district of Central London, in 1982 as Pogue Mahone—pogue mahone being the anglicisation of the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse". - Wikipedia Top 100 Chart History The Pogues 1985 72 Pair Of Brown Eyes -1- 1985 51 Sally MacLennane -2- 1985 62 Dirty Old Town -3- 1986 29 Poguetry In Motion -EP- 1986 42 Haunted -OST- 1987 08 The Irish Rover (The Pogues & The Dubliners) -NAS- 1987 02 Fairytale Of New York (feat. December 11, 20205 yr So happy Sweet Melody has stuck around and not gone out of the Top 10 as I feared! One of their very best
December 11, 20205 yr How the hell did Merry Christmas Everyone climb back up to number 93 in early March in 1986? :D Amazon? :)
December 11, 20205 yr How the hell did Merry Christmas Everyone climbed back up to number 93 in early March in 1986? :D Probably bargain bin singles. The same happened with Mariah (59 in February 1995) and a fair few others I think.
December 11, 20205 yr Fairytale of New York has to be one of the most overrated Christmas songs of all time.
December 11, 20205 yr It's a bit of a downer but RIP to Kirsty MacColl, it's 20 years ago next Friday (18 December) since she died. If 'Fairytale Of New York' could be number 1 next week it would be a fitting tribute. Edited December 11, 20205 yr by Robbie
December 11, 20205 yr Fairytale of New York back at number four! Hopefully it can make it into the top three at some point this year
December 11, 20205 yr How the hell did Merry Christmas Everyone climbed back up to number 93 in early March in 1986? :D Bargain bin buys, same for Mariah in April 1995.
December 11, 20205 yr I've never liked 'Fairytale of New York' (nothing to do with the use of the word 'f*****' either.)
December 11, 20205 yr Amazon? :) I have a feeling there was a Shaky vinyl single box set around that time, and chart rules of the time meant that each single charted separately , but I may have pulled that out of my arse
December 11, 20205 yr YOU'RE CHEAP AND YOU'RE HAGGARD amazing to see Fairytale of New York still slaying the Top 5 these days
December 11, 20205 yr So Mariah is likely to be Christmas number one. Wham! and The Pogues both peaked at #2 with both Last Christmas and Fairytale of New York, could they possibly follow Mariah and finally reach number one?
