I think a lot of people were initially disappointed with this but it's such a grower and the slick and breezy chorus just worms its way into your head. While I don't think this is as good as the singles from TUN, Ariana has completely nailed this R&B/pop sound and can continue to rack up #1's in my chart with songs like this for as long as she pleases. This was unfortunately released just after we completed the Music Video rate in the Ari forum which is a shame because I love the presidential themed visuals where Ari provides up with some very regal looks that I'm giving credit for inspiring America to vote Trump out of office. :P

Blackpink gained the EOY #1 in 2019 with Kill This Love, released the EP & done a tour and then went completely radio-silent for over a year. It felt like an album was never going to come and then it finally happened and it was somehow not a let-down at all. This gave Blackpink their first top 20 hit in the official chart, broke YouTube viewing records and became another long-running #1 in my chart and defined the sound of the lockdown summer. Not many artist can boast a signature sound even releasing an album but this is classic Blackpink; uber-confident and unapologetically loud and forceful, this song is such a massive moment in their careers and provided us with lots of iconic moments (Jennie's black and blonde hair, Lisa's rap). I can't wait for one day where live music can be a thing again and I can see this one performed live as I can already tell its going to be so epic.

It sounded perfectly on trend with it’s Blinding-Lights-esque 80’s influences with Little Mix’s own twist. The Covid pandemic meant we were robbed a big-budget video but what we got is still very impressive with some iconic outfits and was much stronger than some other lockdown videos we saw at the time. This is just a really good, catchy slice of pop with a simple message about moving on and empowerment after a failed relationship. While this may not be the most innovative or daring release of their career, it didn’t need to be and this worked brilliantly as our first introduction into the Confetti era. I’m certainly glad it was chosen above Holiday to be the lead at the very least. The top 3 were all released in the same month so sans-October this would be my #1 song of 2020 :lol:

Finally gaining Little Mix their 5th number one single in the first week of 2021, this is a very fitting way for Jesy’s time in the group to come to an end. Talk about leaving on a high, Little Mix have had possibly their strongest year ever for me with them gaining 2 EOY top 10’s for the first time. This was released on the same day as Positions giving it the worst possible opportunity for me to have enough time to listen to it loads but after spending two weeks behind Ariana, it still manged to spend multiple weeks at #1 and even finish higher than Positions come the end of 2020. This instantly sounded massive with thundering bass and a melody that lives rent-free in your head the second you hear it. This is only intensified by the completely killer and kick-ass video that accompanied it on release day. We get some exceptionally polished, killer choreography and some very slick editing that has helped make it, for many, their best song for a long time. This leaves a battle between Ariana and Blackpink for my #1 for the 3rd year in a row.

When the tracklist for Positions was first released, this was the song I was desperate to hear and it delivered exactly what you want for a song with such a title. It's slighty tongue-in-cheek but it's a very explicit sex-jam, Ari explained it's origins as "We heard the strings that sounded so like Disney and orchestral and full and pure, and I was like “What is the dirtiest possible most opposing lyrics we could write to this?”. The impact of the lyrics is only heighted by how angelic and heavenly her voice is. Although I loved this straight away, it wasn't originally able to get above Positions to #1 and just when I was starting to get a little bored of it, the brilliant music video was released and 34+35 bagged 5 weeks at the top (the most of any song in 2020). The video is already challenging 'tun' to be my favourite videos of hers. I absolutely adore the Austin Powers films and Ari as a fembot really made me smile when I first saw it. Suitably for the song, this is the also the hottest video of her career, I don't know where that choreography with the splits came from but wow. This even managed another week at #1 in my chart this year after the Meg & Doja remix was released. I can only imagine what the video for that is going to be like.

Lovesick Girls makes it back-to-back wins for Blackpink and with a Rosé solo coming anytime soon, I'm sure they will be challenging in some respects again this time next year. This song is the definition of addictive. I've mentioned it before about how Blackpink always conclude their songs on a high and in a way that makes you want to instantly smash the replay button but nevermore so than with this one. The outro where they all sing 'lovesick girls' in union just sounds brilliant and epic and then Jennie's final line leaves you wanting more. Most K-Pop groups are known for their visuals and Blackpink nail it again here. The scenes where they dance together are all great and the scene of Jisoo throwing the food at the camera is what I was going to make my new signature but I was too lazy to make a gif of it. It's as shame that this became the 2nd video of the era where they had to censor the video post-release after some Medical Workers Union complained about Jennie's nurse outfit. It was also great to hear Jennie rapping again, she's meant to be the lead rapper of the group but Lisa's been getting all the verses recently but they both get the opportunity here and Jennie does great. I've not got bored of this song at all and it assured it's place as my #1 song of 2020 by climbing all the way back to the top in the final chart of the year.
