I think also Hubert‘s death 2 years ago at Radillon was probably at the forefront of quite a lot of drivers minds. A lot of them came up with him And I’m not sure how comfortable some of them would have been racing up there in the wet and that kind of slight hesitation on that complex could kill them or someone else. So I don’t really hold it against the drivers for being a bit weary of Spa.

Normally I would rail against F1 for being overly cautious but Spa can be a deadly track under dry conditions.

Totally agree about the yellows comment. I’m really shocked at how lenient they have been regarding yellow flag speed. That’s more dangerous than a wet race

True there has been some scary incidents at Spa recently the one at the 24 hour race and the six-car pile-up in the W Series. Are Spa making changes to the circuit?

Yes. they're spending £80 million to extend and straighten the run off on the left at Radilion which should stop cars bouncing back on to the track.

Elsewhere the latest rumour is Kimi and Giovinazzi are out at Alfa and Bottas and Nick De Vries will replace them. Alex Albon will take the vacant Williams seat

F1 2022 Driver Predictions

Mercedes: Hamilton, Russell

Red Bull: Verstappen, Perez

McLaren: Norris, Ricciardo

Ferrari: Leclerc, Sainz Jr

Alpine: Alonso, Ocon

Aston Martin: Vettel, Stroll

Alpha Tauri: Gasly, Tsunoda

Williams: Albon, Latifi

Alfa Romeo: Bottas, De Vries

Haas: Schumacher, Mazepin

It'd be good for Albon to get another F1 chance, good enough driver to get more than 2 seasons. I thought if Alfa got Bottas they should move for someone new into F1, Gio is fine but nothing more than that and not really shown anything in 3 seasons to suggest he'd ever be much more.

I believe Sunday was the first time that there has been literally no actual racing? The points thing is mad but there's literally no precedent for anything like it. I'm sure there will be a change to the rule to prevent it happening again - didn't the minimum number of starting cars change after USA 05/06 (forget the exact year)? There needs to be something about the number of laps being actually raced and not behind a safety car. I'm a bit conflicted on the awarding of points, I do think there should be some reward for the qualifying but half points definitely feels too much.

would be great if De Vries gets a seat!

Would be good to see Albon back in a seat. Definitely deserves another crack and we've seen how impressively Gasly bounced back after his Red Bull floppage so there's every chance Albon will impress.

Must admit I thought Bottas would have returned to Williams rather than gone to Alfa. De Vries would also be a very smart acquisition.

Albion has been doing a fairly solid job in DTM so far this season with a few nice moves but his F1 stint wasn’t exactly spectacular

Gong back to the events last weekend does anyone remember the 2007 Japanese GP? The conditions and more specifically, the visibility were FAR worse during that race. In fact, spectators on the main straight got refunds because even they couldn't see any of the action. They did 19 laps under the safety car before the race got underway. I do think that had it not been at Spa there would have been of a concerted effort to get a show going but with all the controversies around the circuit at the moment they veered on the side of caution.

And on the subject of half points, I also remember clearly the 2009 Malaysian GP which was the last instance they were used. But at least over half of the race had been completed then. I think at least 50% or at minimum 25% of a race distance (and I mean actual racing laps not just safety car procession) should be completed before awarding any such points.

Mansell made some interesting points in this interview about current driver's approach to challenging corners/tracks and also highlighted a number of ways people have suggested the race could have proceeded -

On the points question I'm fairly ambivalent. It does feel like those drivers who qualified well deserve something in the absence of a race and yet it's practically a law that 'points are not earned on a saturday' and so it goes against the ethos of the race being the event. Having said that Sprint Qualifying has muddied the waters there too.

We just have to hope that should Verstappen win the title it's by more than 12.5 points or this will be the talking point of the season

Aye but you have dodgy Hamilton’s dodgy British GP win and +25 tho too, so the dodgy factor is still 12.5 in Hamiltons column.

Kimi has announced he’s out at the end of the year. He is retiring

No surprise there but I'll massively miss him from the paddock. A truly unique personality and let's not forget a damn good driver. At his peak (McLaren 03-05), was one of the greatest ever. Hope he has one last hurrah moment this season like his first lap in Portimao last year.

Hamilton got 7.5 though so he's only gained 5 from it.

It does seem wrong that he got awarded 3 points for winning a 20 lap race but 12.5 points for following the safety car for a couple of laps.

For me, as a driver he's top 20 but only just. However, there's nodoubt that when he was on form he was formidable. It's a shame though that despite his talent he didn't always seem to match that with effort. Feels like a wasted talent sometimes.

As an individual he's among the greatest characters the sport has seen though

His radio messages are truly legendary. The „leave me alone I know what I’m doing“ from the Lotus-Renault era a particular highlight

And who can forget Kimi‘s retiring to his boat mid-Monaco GP

Gloves and steering wheel is my personal fave. Or when he said Di Resta should stick to the reporting stuff.
'I was having a shit' is my favourite

As it's Kimi I can't help but wonder if it's really a ploy to avoid having to talk to interviewers about his impending retirement all weekend.
I don’t think i have ever heard anyone moan as much in such a short period as Hamilton in a Grand Prix. Honestly. It’s worse than a toddler mid tantrum
