I can't totally count it out but it's not really clear if it can beat Justin on attrition just yet. If Hot Hits give it more of a push then it's a lock.

It's a 2nd week at #1 for "Peaches". Maybe I'm already eating my words up in Georgia but it is proving a close contest so Lil Nas X could potentially take it next week. The latest big streaming hit that will likely not make much upward progress because it's not white enough for certain people to give it a chance is Polo G's "RAPSTAR" in at #4. It's by far his highest lead artist entry though he did have a top 20 hit with Juice WRLD and co. on "Hate The Other Side". Olivia Rodrigo indeed hits the magic #11 position with "deja vu" but will almost certainly climb into the top 10 next week anyway. Dr. Luke is a scumbag among other worse things but I guess there's a new Doja Cat song. Most new action on the chart this week is Taylor Swift's re-recording. "Mr. Perfectly Fine" has been extremely lapped up by radio which will at least give it a 2nd week in the top 50 or even more but it's still attached to an anchor. "Forever & Always" seemingly gets in ahead of more obvious choices just because there are two different versions of it on the album that have been combined, which is a fun time to remind everyone of that time in 2015 when Justin Bieber's album release had one of the track's streams attached instead to "The Feeling", resulting in a longer than usual chart run for it. A truly spectacular event is that Rag'N'Bone Man has actually managed a top 50 hit without making the Spotify top 200, impossible to determine why. Joel of various terminally unfunny gag names gets his 3rd top 50 hit this week (as a side note: "Lonely" which never charted was certified gold). climbs for "BED" and "deja vu" are literally all that ARIA has hinted in the midweeks today so get ready for another eventful week. Tones and I still needs another 5 weeks to hit the triple digits officially in case you were wondering.

Only two of Taylor Swift's albums to date have not hit #1, her debut album and "Fearless", the latter which was blocked by a 6 month old Kings of Leon album and then a 2 month old Lily Allen album. But hey, there's retribution to be had because the new version of "Fearless" easily sails to the top spot. If you're wondering who Richard Clapton is, I can't really help much because he's well before my time as well but he's a relatively celebrated Australian musician whose accolades outweigh his chart performance. Case in point, this new album is his highest chart position ever. BROCKHAMPTON's latest run of bangers & sadbangers lands at #6, their 3rd top 10 album though a bit down from "GINGER"'s #3 peak. Australian alt-country group The Wildes get their first ever top 50 album. Lachlan Bryan is a member of the group and I'll admit I don't know why he's credited ahead of them here. Next week could see Taylor Swift retain #1 if she can hold off London Grammar, which I think is probably what will happen. Elsewhere is an extremely eclectic set of debuts from The Offspring, AJ Tracey, Alex Henry Foster, Cannibal Corpse & Greta Van Fleet, I'm sure at least one person has checked out all of them.

good for Taylor, Mr Perfectly Fine did better than in the US or UK

hope Montero can beat Bieber next week

Lil Nas X does indeed score his 2nd #1 this week. With "Peaches" only being #1 for 2 weeks, was it really a #1 hit? Speaking of which, was "drivers license" really a #1 hit if Olivia Rodrigo's follow up has not peaked at #11, as it's up to #6. This is a thrilling week where nothing managed to debut in the top 50, if only there were some thrilling song they could include. Next week does not look much better with only AURORA pegged to hit the top 50.

There's a bit more to note on the album chart however. We have a brand new top 2. Bucking expected convention, London Grammar's 3rd album has become their first ever #1, after debuting at #2 & #3 respectively before. I choose to attribute this to Dot Major's star making voice over work on Disco Elysium. Right behind them are The Offspring, who have historically performed especially well in Australia, having hit #1 with "Smash" and "Americana". Their latest album is their highest charter since those heady days. Alex Henry Foster scores his first ever top 50 album at the dizzying heights of #6. If only there were a few less debuts then maybe AJ Tracey would've had a chance at the top 10, but instead he joins the absurdly growing list of British rappers who just can't quite make the top 10. Stormzy's had two #11 albums, The Streets hit #11, slowthai hit #11, Skepta hit #13 & #15, Dizzee Rascal hit #18, Headie One hit #22 and so on. With that I have the truly bizarre fact that I believe the only British rap albums to hit the top 10 are Plan B's "Ill Manors" at #9, outdone by KSI's "Dissimulation" at #4. But actually maybe the most unusual thing this week is death metal stalwarts Cannibal Corpse getting their first top 50 album. There's also Greta Van Fleet whose more low profile follow up doesn't come close to the top 10 heights of their debut. Next week has very little going on except a John Lennon vinyl boost and a new Kaleo album.

Lil Nas X is #1 for a 2nd week but I'm hesitant to say he can make a 3rd. This is an utterly boring set of weeks on the chart but on the other hand, there is a chaotic race for #1 next week. I am very outspoken about my disrespect for shit stat padding remixes as a means to score an out of reach chart peak all for a worse version of the song that fades away to irrelevance but inevitably taints the song in general. ANYWAY, "WITHOUT YOU" will probably be #1 next week. Incidentally we're amidst a big vault also for the remix of "Body", so much so that I think if it keeps up its pace, ARIA will be flat out wrong with their charts given their still unclear procedure for Thursday's data. On the other hand, if you are a fan of seeing songs peak slightly higher as a result of these inorganic injections, I am proud as punch for you to say that "Save Your Tears" is no longer a #6 peaking song, and is now a #4 peaking song. Truly a life-changing moment. There's just one top 50 debut and it comes from AURORA who has never charted here before but has had several radio hits on triple j (in fact they briefly played "Runaway" when it came out). Such is the state of affairs that it's still not even the oldest song in the top 50 this week, and it may have more competition as The Killers are seriously challenging a return this week. Otherwise it's yet another slow week with only Billie debuting probably.

Speaking of slow weeks, Justin Bieber returns to #1, no doubt with continually dropping streams. You know we're in the dregs of album chart sales when Maroon 5 nearly get a new peak. Porter Robinson does get the one proper new entry to the chart, granted not as high as his debut which reached #13. Next week at the very least should have some action. Amy Shark will probably be at #1, alongside debuts for Gojira, Royal Blood, DJ Khaled, girl in red, Julia Stone, Big Scary and more.

Gonna be honest, the top of this week's chart combines a few of my least favourite things, namely stat-pad vanity remixes, Dr. Luke, and inaccuracies. Which is to say that "Body" will be #1 next week, but it should have this week (because ARIA seem to compile the chart before getting Spotify's Thursday data) and "WITHOUT YOU" never should have hit the top spot. Also I'm super busy this week and I'm not dignifying the rest.

For the first time in 2 weeks, the top of the charts is actually correct, as "Body" belatedly ascends to #1. Currently Olivia Rodrigo is #1 on Spotify, nearly ahead of "Body" combined but she'll need at least another week to get to #1. J. Cole has surprisingly never had a top 10 hit yet, though that might change next week (hard to call). As a preview, he gets his 4th top 20 hit with "i n t e r l u d e". P!nk also is at it again with high sales and lagging streams to get a big debut for "All I Know So Far", which admittedly should hold on much better than "Anywhere Away From Here" did, but not as well as "Cover Me In Sunshine". Trippie Redd & Playboi Carti both score their first ever top 50 hits this week, although Playboi Carti of course had an uncredited role on top 10 hit "EARFQUAKE" in 2019. Perhaps most curiously this week is the return to the top 50 for Coldplay, who haven't seen such heights since "Something Just Like This" in 2017. They return to the tried and true tradition of unintentionally mimicking Australian artists as the track bears a weird similarity to Shannen James' most recent single "Superstitious".

There have scarcely been slower weeks on the album chart, and as such self-proclaimed eternal underdog Amy Shark actually manages a 2nd week at #1. There's just one debut at the top end of the chart and it's the 2nd album for Rag'N'Bone Man which lands just a little below the #3 peak for "Human". Such is the state of things that the Maroon 5 album that sells about 1 copy a week manages to get a new peak, suggesting that it is a perpetual #15 or thereabouts on the theoretical album streaming chart. The only other new entry comes from lockdown conspiracist and former musician Van Morrison. Next week could be an interesting battle, with Delta Goodrem & J. Cole dueling for the top spot. The Black Keys, You Am I, St. Vincent & Alan Jackson should also make entrances.

Didn’t expect Body to be so successful outside the UK! Also Dance Monkey on the verge of finally leaving the top 50. Fingers crossed the last time it seen on the chart.

Ah fair enough. Let’s hope it has seen the last of its resurgences now then.

"Body" logs its 2nd week at #1 which will likely be its last. As expected though not outright stated, "good 4 u" debuts at #2 and has vaulted to such a monumental lead that it's hard to imagine it being upset. Anyhow, her triumphant arrival has the immediate effect of blocking J. Cole from scoring his first ever top 10 hit, having previously reached #13 on "The London", or by himself, #15 on "MIDDLE CHILD". Now overtaking both is "M Y . L I F E" at #11. "The Off-Season" joins the elite company of "÷", "ye", "thank u, next", "folklore" and maybe something I'm forgetting as albums who've had their entire tracklist hit the top 50. You would logically think that there's another entrant coming soon to this list but au contraire, ARIA have not yet decided to include anything from Olivia's album. Terribly frustrating as I suspect she could set a new bar for how high an entire tracklist can go, but we may never know for certain. Also this week there is not a single new peak which I don't think has happened in a very long time.

Delta Goodrem scores her 5th #1 album this week, doing so almost entirely without the need to score hit singles although it does have a brief top 40 hit in "Paralyzed" on it. She's hit #1 with all of her albums barring "Child Of The Universe" (blocked by 2nd week Taylor Swift) and her Christmas album last year (also blocked by Taylor Swift). Speaking of Australian artists with 3 consecutive #1 albums, just behind her this week is You Am I, who in the mid '90s made history as the first Australian band to debut at #1 with 3 albums in a row. Their latest album is their highest charter since that historic album and really I just have to shout them out as being genuinely excellent. Meanwhile because of how the album chart is weighted, utter dominance on the singles chart means nothing and J. Cole merely manages a #3 debut, having previously reached #1 with "KOD" on a slower week. Also bad at choosing weeks is King Gizzard who still haven't had a #1 album but I imagine there were plenty of safe weeks to drop the vinyl for "L.W." and secure it. Now we wait and see how Radiohead will blow it again but realistically King Gizzard will probably release several new albums by then. The Black Keys score their 5th top 10 album as their parabola descends. A less clear trajectory is the up and down stakes of Alan Jackson's chart history, which adds a #14 to its collection. St. Vincent's last album got her to the top 50 for the first time, and now her tribute to 6LACK's verse on "Morocco" gets her slightly higher at #15. In the world of names I haven't thought about in a long time, Jason Owen was the runner up on X Factor behind Samantha Jade in 2012, who scored 2 top 10 albums shortly after and dipped. It seems serendipitous that he returns with a John Denver covers album if only because "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" has been on an ad recently. Psychedelic rockers Babe Rainbow (previously with 'The') hit #18 for the 2nd time now with their latest, while Nicki Minaj enters with a re-issued mixtape, and Jorja Smith has a glint into the top 50 with an album that I don't think had a full physical release yet. Next week will probably be Olivia Rodrigo, P!nk & twenty one pilots in that order, but I'm most excited at the prospect of a Simpsons inspired doom metal band from Melbourne getting in, if only so I can type their amazing album title.

I wondered if ARIA allowed all Olivia Rodrigo SOUR track lists to be charted in the entire top 50? Currently the whole eleven SOUR tracks was charted within top 20 for both Spotify and Apple Music AU this week.

Officially the 'rule' is that every song that appears on the chart needs to specifically be allowed by the label. Historically, this was characterised by (usually) Sony delaying the entrance of many singles so they could get flashier debuts (happened a lot with Idol/X Factor alumni), and a lot of promo singles that were due to debut in the top 50 and rapidly vanish would just never show up, assumably so they don't mess up an artist's chart history or something.

Nowadays it strikes me more as sheer negligence. Often it impacts independently released tracks like Tyga's "Taste" or BENEE's "Soaked" whose popularity went entirely undocumented (in the case of BENEE, I believe they started counting it when her EP came out, but it was long gone by then). Just recently we've had Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill" getting baffling support on Spotify but ARIA are still ignoring it, same goes for Duncan Laurence's "Arcade". XXXTENTACION's "Jocelyn Flores" was completely absent from the chart in 2017, and when he passed away mid-chart week, "SAD!" vaulted into the top 10, but "Jocelyn Flores" didn't debut until the week after, assumably because someone connected the dots and realised it was missing. ARIA haven't (as far as I know) corrected a chart after publishing since 2013 so the idea of retroactively fixing that is absurd, will never happen.

When it comes to big album releases, it's a coin flip. Usually you can assume there'll be no shenanigans and the whole album will get in, but there are always exceptions. Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN." only had "DNA.", "LOYALTY." and "LOVE." appear on the chart, which I interpret as them being the only tracks on the album that made the top 100 digital chart, so there's the isolated 'people actually care about this song' aspect (because "ELEMENT." I believe would have actually charted above "LOVE." that week so it's not just the biggest ones overall), although on the other hand, those ended up being the 'singles' in the long run. My digital chart logic also checked out earlier that year with Drake's "More Life", of which only "Passionfruit" appeared. Travis Scott's "ASTROWORLD" roll-out was an odd one where only "SICKO MODE", "STARGAZING" and previous single "BUTTERFLY EFFECT" were let on the chart on the first week. However, in the 2nd week, the rest of the album was suddenly fair game and so all of their peak positions are historically misleading because they missed their biggest week, "YOSEMITE" and a bunch of others should probably be top 50 hits but aren't.

The Weeknd fairly consistently never dabbles in this, almost as if someone doesn't want to make his chart history messy. Dua Lipa also had none of this, only the promoted "Break Your Heart", and prior release "Future Nostalgia" charting, but "Levitating" and "Hallucinate" probably should have as well, the latter never having charted still as a result. Drake's "Scorpion" had an odd result where nearly every track on the album except "Survival" and "Sandra's Rose" were allowed on the chart, which at a stretch you could declare they're too 'interludey' to count as singles. On the other hand, in that same year, Ariana Grande charted all of "sweetener", including 37 second "raindrops (an angel cried)" which I believe is still the shortest ever chart hit.

Last year I discovered a new breed of this, where it's unclear if it's negligence or future planning. Hip-hop often is treated so haphazardously on the chart (which goes beyond album releases) as if it's being handled by someone who isn't remotely invested in the artform (shocking, I know). Pop Smoke's album release felt a bit like that, where most of the tracks were let in but some randomly weren't. Of those who weren't included were "Mood Swings" and "What You Know Bout Love", which went on to be big top 10 hits later on so you could hypothesise that this was future planning, knowing that those tracks would blow up in the future and to give them a clean chart run. That works in theory but they were so slow on the latter that it probably was as high as top 20 before they included it (I even posted evidence of this on ARIA's Facebook, and it was included the week after, I don't know if I'm responsible or not). As for "Mood Swings", nobody could've predicted this, but the nature of cumulative sales means that those early weeks before it blew up would've been the difference between it making and missing the ARIA End Of Year Singles chart, where officially it probably landed at #101-#105 (similar thing happened to Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams"). Later that year, every new track on The Kid LAROI's extended album charted...except for "WITHOUT YOU", which also wouldn't be fixed until it was 'debuting' in the top 10. If nothing else it's a fascinating case study into astroturfing on TikTok, but maybe it's just a coincidence?

The tl;dr of all of this is that we never really know what's going to happen with anything, especially album tracks. All I have to go by is ARIA's Wednesday midweeks and whether or not they mention the tracks. If they do, then you're good, I've never seen them redact a chart entry*, but with Olivia's tracks going unmentioned, it's still a toss up. Justin Bieber's album tracks weren't mentioned in the midweeks earlier this year but did show up in the end, so I won't know until tomorrow, but for the historical significance of this impact, and the fact that it's otherwise inflating Lewis Capaldi 9 places higher, I sincerely hope she pulls through.

*well Powfu's "death bed" vanished for its 2nd week for no explainable reason

Do we know if Heartbreak Anthem debuted inside the top 100?

Can't say because we're not privy to top 100 data since ARIA lock it behind a subscription

Coinciding perfectly with the 2021 Tournament Of Champions, we have a song called "good 4 u" at #1. Last week we had no new peaks in the top 50, this week Olivia takes both of them with this and "deja vu" which improves its peak to #3 without the aid of a superfluous remix. Complicating the End Of Year #1 single race, "drivers license" overtakes "Heat Waves" again. Much like the mammoth chart impact of "The Off-Season" last week was pipped for top singles chart debut (as was "÷" incidentally), Olivia has also been beaten to that post by BTS, who score their 3rd top 10 hit with "Butter". They perhaps just chose a bad week for this because it actually had a solid 100,000 more streams on debut than "Dynamite" (which debuted at #2) did, though in saying that I couldn't tell you how its sales compare. Elsewhere Olivia dominates the chart as ALMOST her entire album debuts in the top 25. I say almost because "favorite crime" is missing for no good reason. This is especially curious as it's the one song on the album that's still climbing up, so I guess it's possible it could debut later on and give Olivia a clean top 25 sweep, which is by far the highest an entire tracklisting has gone. Bella Poarch gets her first chart entry also this week, as does Majestic after waiting patiently behind big album releases. Boney M.'s prog Christmas classic never quite makes the top 50 so this is their first time here in many decades. Also Vance Joy has a new song out, joining the Amy Shark club of struggling and not quite going top 50 on Spotify but being buoyed by strong sales.

Unlike J. Cole, Olivia Rodrigo does seal the #1 album, and it's no small feat either, stopping P!nk to the top spot. She of course goes to #1 with all of her studio albums and ever since being adopted to meme status in Australia, has only otherwise missed the top spot with her City and Colour collab album (blocked by a Like A Version compilation). twenty one pilots got to #1 with "Trench" but have to settle for #3 this time around, while Powderfinger also yet again choose a too-competitive week, releasing an album for last year's one-off reunion not-actually-live show, of which 20% of this album's run time is choice deep cut "Thrilloilogy". But maybe the real big news of this week is that for the first time ever, My Bloody Valentine are on the chart. Because Gen Xers love to remind us of how much better their music was even though they weren't actually buying it at the time, and so it is of course the zoomer era charts that remain based. "Loveless" makes the top 10, "Isn't Anything" makes the top 50 and "m b v" is probably not far behind either. Excepting my love of MBV though, perhaps the most important debut this week is that of Dr. Colossus, a Melbourne-based doom metal band based on The Simpsons. They have perhaps the longest album title to ever make the top 20 (Fiona Apple's Idler Wheel reached #23, When The Pawn surprisingly never made the top 50), and we can all say boo-urns to that. With the understandable exception of last year, Eurovision compilations usually make the top 20, though I guess Australia not making it through the semi-finals is a valid reason for our enthusiasm to be dampened this year with a slightly lower showing at #23. Next week, after having collaborated twice in recent years, The Veronicas & Allday are both looking to make top 10 debuts alongside each other.
