Forgive my ignorance, but who is Olivia Rodrigo and where has this song come from? Is there any reason that it's climbed so high? Obviously can't be on name power!

Olivia now 1 on iTunes! ❤️

Number 1 is in the bag now.

Great song, thought it was a 90s song but it is 1989.

Strange song to become popular on TikTok if I assume that what happened to make it chart now on itunes?

Edit: but didn't chart until March 1990 in the UK so will be on the TOTP on BBC Four rerun soon!

We're already in June on BBC Four :)

Ooh I've never heard of this Olivia but this is excellent on first listen. Excited to have a new pop girl on the scene and looking to smash so instantly.

Two fingers up to all the tastemakers and "sound of" pollsters who just prove once again that they know NOTHING.

You're moaning about the Sound of... pollsters 'knowing nothing' in the exact same post that says you had never heard of Olivia Rodrigo before...?

Of course they wouldn't have included her on the list, this is literally her first single outside of a couple of songs for the HSM soundtrack. The point of the poll is to highlight artists that deserve more attention in the following year based on the output they already have out. It's also explicitly predicting 'promising new talent', not artists that will necessarily dominate the charts.

What I meant was the tastemakers are always tipping the next big thing as someone with a bit of an edge or boring authenticity about them. Like the year when they put gave Tom Garratt the prize and snubbed Dua Lipa and Mabel.

So it's funny that within days of 2021 starting, a girl from the Disney Channel has shot straight to number 1. Not that they should've necessarily seen her coming.

Yeah I don't think the people voting for the Sound of poll are under any illusion that their 'boring' 'authentic' picks are going to be the year's biggest chart stars. If that was ever the point of the poll there would have been a bunch of X Factor artists included on it every year back in the day.
