Supporting Actress: 4/5 (had Foster over Close) Original Screenplay: 3/5 (had Mank & Never Rarely Sometimes Always over Judas & the Black Messiah & Sound of Metal) Adapted Screenplay: 3/5 (had Ma Rainey & The Mauritanian over Borat 2 & The White Tiger) Animation: 3/5 (had The Croods 2 & The Willoughbys over Over The Moon & Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon) Costume: 3/5 (had The Glorias & David Copperfield over Mulan & Pinocchio) Make-Up & Hairstyling: 4/5 (had The Little Things over Hillbilly Elegy) Production Design: 3/5 (had Emma & Mulan over News of the World & Tenet) Editing: 5/5 :cheer: Cinematography: 4/5 (had Cherry over Trial of Chicago 7) Visual Effects: 3/5 (had Soul & Welcome To Chechya over Love & Monsters & Mulan) Song: 3/5 (had Wuhan Flu & Turntables over Fight For Your & Hear My Voice - why did I even predict against HER) Score: 4/5 (had The Little Things over Da 5 Bloods) Sound: 3/5 (had Nomadland & Trial of Chicago 7 over Greyhound & News of the World - Tom Hanks' films screwing me over x) International: 3/5 (had Dear Comrades & La Llorona one The Man Who Sold His Skin & Better Days) Documentary: 4/5 (had Boys State over The Mole Agent) Animated Short: 3/5 (had The Snail & the Whale + To Gerard over Genius Loci & Yes People) Live Action Short: 4/5 (had The Human Voice over The Present) Documentary Short: 2/5 (only got Colette & Hunger Ward correct) so 3 full houses, a lot of 3/5's and only 1 major flop x
March 15, 20214 yr Pretty predictable noms on the whole, gutted for I'm Thinking of Ending Things though even though that buzz had completely fizzled out :'( I really need to watch these, I've been a bit behind! Excellent to see Maria Bakalova for Supporting Actress, she was phenomenal <3 Crossing everything for a Wolfwalkers win in Animation but that it likely a pipe dream!

April 18, 20214 yr I've finally watched all 8 Best Picture nominations! Here's my order of preference: 1. Promising Young Woman 2. The Trial of the Chicago 7 3. Judas and the Black Messiah 4. Sound of Metal 5. The Father 6. Minari 7. Nomadland 8. Mank Here are my predictions for what I actually think will happen though: Best Picture - Nomadland Best Actor - Chadwick Boseman (I actually think Anthony Hopkins did a better performance, but I feel that the Oscars should honour Boseman posthumously). Best Actress - Frances McDormand (I really want Carey Mulligan to win it but Frances seems to be cleaning up at the moment) Best Director - Chloe Zhao - Nomadland Best Supporting Actor - Paul Raci - Sound of Metal Best Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-Jung - Minari Best Original Screenplay - Promising Young Woman Best Adapted Screenplay - Nomadland Best Original Score - Soul Best Original Song - Speak Now - One Night in Miami Best Visual Effects - Tenet Best Cinematography - Nomadland Best Production Design - Mank Best Costume Design - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Best Hair and Make Up - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Best Animated Feature - Soul Best Sound Editing - Sound of Metal Best Film Editing - Nomadland
April 24, 20214 yr Author tomorrow night! Seen basically everything but nomadland so this is gonna be fun when that sweeps everything  FINAL PREDICTIONS: Picture - Nomadland (alternate: Promising Young Woman) --> yeah this is probs locked Director - Chloe Zhao - Nomadland (alternate: Emerald Fennell - PYW) --> this is locked Actor - Anthony Hopkins - The Father (alternate: Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey) --> ahh idk, I'm gonna predict the spoiler here but I'm pretty much 51/49 here (the other 3 nope). I feel this may be a similar repeat of Glenn v Olivia where voters keep going that they believe & are happy the former will win but vote for the latter as they feel more passionate about the performance. Actress - f*** KNOWS. Imma go Day>Mulligan>McDormand>Davis but yeah anyone but Kirby has a shot here. I fully expect there to be a few votes between the winner and 4th Supporting Actor - Daniel Kaluuya - Judas & the Black Messiah (alternate: Sacha Baron Cohen - Chicago 7) Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-Jung - Minari (alternate: Maria Bakalova - Borat 2) --> these 2 feel good to win Original Screenplay - Promising Young Woman (alternate: The Trial of the Chicago 7) Adapted Screenplay - The Father (alternate: Nomadland) - 50/50 here Animation - Soul (alternate: Wolfwalkers) International - Another Round (alternate: Quo Vadis, Aida?) Documentary - My Octopus Teacher (alternate: Crip Camp) Documentary Short - A Love Song for Latasha (alternate: Hunger Ward) Live Action Short - The Letter Room (alternate: Two Distant Strangers) Animation short - If Anything Happens I Love You (alternate: Burrow) Original Score - Soul (alternate: Mank) Original Song - lo si (The Life Ahead) (alternate: Speak Now - One Night in Miami) --> honestly all 5 could win, this is v. open  imma go with this being Diane's time tho! Sound - Sound of Metal (alternate: Mank) Production Design - The Father (alternate: Mank) --> Mank is the fave here so imma take a risk predicting The Father Cinematography - Nomadland (alternate: Mank) Makeup & Hairstyling - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (alternate: Pinocchio) Costume Design - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (alternate: Emma) Editing - Sound of Metal (alternate: Nomadland) Visual Effects - Tenet (alternate: The One & Only Ivan) --> I feel like Tenet is gonna lose and we'll get a shock win, but the other 4 all seem so weak
April 24, 20214 yr I've seen all the Best Picture nominations finally, first time in ages, gotta give them credit as I don't think there are any duds :o although nothing anywhere near as good as Parasite last year, my own ranking: 01. Promising Young Women (I found it really hard to pick a favourite as all of these are very close together and there isn't an obvious standout, but this felt like the biggest outlier with the most contemporary themes) 02. Nomadland (I understand the 'nothing happens' criticisms, but I don't agree. It was meant to be a poetic, fly-on-the-wall look at what life on the road is like and I think they did it really well without ever coming across as one-sided, the scores and landscapes were absolutely beautiful too and it didn't outstay its welcome) 03. The Father (this was a hard topic for me as my grandmother has dementia and some scenes really hit home, but it was masterfully done, superbly acted as one can expect and a really great interpretation of the themes. It seemed like the one play adaptation this year that felt truly cinematic) 04. Judas and the Black Messiah (this was what Chicago 7 should've been, a really great, interesting and crucially, accurate account that felt very relevant to this day, the two leads were excellent) 05. Minari (Beautiful looking film and I absolutely loved the characters and the journeys they went on and I loved the natural feel of it, slightly docked as it went on a little bit longer than it should have) 06. Sound of Metal (Excellent sound design and brilliant performances, slightly predictable as a story) 07. Mank (Very technically competent and I liked that it wasn't particularly complementary of old Hollywood and a very different style for Fincher, it just felt a bit dragging and tough to click with sometimes) 08. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (this just felt the most Oscar-baity of them all, the story is a great one and the script/performances are excellent for the most part, but it took too many liberties with the story which felt a bit melodramatic in practice) I'm not too good with predictions but I'll have a go with the main ones: Best Picture: Nomadland Best Director: Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) < Hopkins would get this in any other year, but the whole posthumous award and the fact he KNEW he was dying when he did it I reckon will sway them. Best Actress: Frances McDormand (Nomadland) < Very tough to predict, but I reckon they'll go with an Oscar darling) Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) Best Supporting Actress: Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) < Would love Maria Bakalova to pull off a surprise, but think Amanda Seyfried is the likely surprise if there is one. Best Original Score: Soul Best Original Song: Speak Now (One Night in Miami) Best Adapted Screenplay: Nomadland Best Original Screenplay: Trial of the Chicago 7 Best Animated Film: Soul < Poor Wolfwalkers though :( Best Documentary Feature: Time Best International Feature: Another Round Best Visual Effects: Tenet Best Cinematography: Nomadland Best Production Design: Mank Best Costume Design: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Best Hair and Make Up: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Best Animated Feature - Soul Best Sound Editing: Sound of Metal Best Film Editing: Sound of Metal Idk about the short films, it'd be a random guess!
April 25, 20214 yr Author Love that we've had some other predictions :cheeseblock: Best Supporting Actress: Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) < Would love Maria Bakalova to pull off a surprise, but think Amanda Seyfried is the likely surprise if there is one. I'd actually pretty comfortably argue that Amanda is 5th in the category! The fact that she lost the globe as the at the time frontrunner to the first supporting actress Globes winner to miss an Oscar nom since like 1976 + was snubbed at SAG (which all the other 4 made), her chances feel pretty dead! Also Mank feels like The Irishman pt. 2 in lots of noms but zero chance of winning anything except a couple of techs! For supporting actress in likeliness I'd go Youn>Bakalova>Colman>Close>Seyfried. Youn has the significant wins, Bakalova has the critics support & passion behind her, Colman has her film surging at the best possible time & Close has the overdue narrative, despite it being for that piece of crap. Seyfried doesn't really feel like she has anything going for her at this point tbh
April 26, 20214 yr Author Winners: Picture - Nomadland Director - Chloe Zhao - Nomadland Actor - Anthony Hopkins - The Father Actress - Frances McDormand - Nomadland Supporting Actor - Daniel Kaluuya - Judas & the Black Messiah Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-Jung - Minari Original Screenplay - Promising Young Woman Adapted Screenplay - The Father Animation - Soul International - Another Round Documentary - My Octopus Teacher Documentary Short - Colette Live Action Short - Two Distant Strangers Animation short - If Anything Happens I Love You Original Score - Soul Original Song - Fight For You - H.E.R. - Judas & The Black messiah Sound - Sound of Metal Production Design - Mank Cinematography - Mank Makeup & Hairstyling - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Costume Design - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Editing - Sound of Metal Visual Effects - Tenet
April 26, 20214 yr Author that ceremony... wasn't great :((( it was just so LIFELESS, the whole thing. bring back ending speeches early ASAP. Maybe Youn & one or two others were nice being that long & not being played off. The amount of 4-5mins ramblings and repetitive thank you's, nope. no audience interaction (apart from the last 20 mins, which we just wanted the show done by that point). just pretty dull on the whole. NO CLIPS for 90% of the categories was a messT, as if anyone would check out the nominated films by knowing nothing about them gah. No clips for acting especially hurt. The ending, what a mess that completely BACKFIRED on the producers. Putting Best Actor last just for firstly Phoenix to not talk about each individual nominee & them clearly placing it there to end on a Boseman win when it was obvious enough Hopkins could win and that it was too big of a risk. Them not doing picture last and having the 2 lead acting categories at the end for a 10 second McDormand speech & Hopkins no show. the sudden ending. Gah I was so hopeful for this telecast :( tomorrow night! Documentary - My Octopus Teacher (alternate: Crip Camp) Documentary Short - A Love Song for Latasha (alternate: Hunger Ward) Live Action Short - The Letter Room (alternate: Two Distant Strangers) Animation short - If Anything Happens I Love You (alternate: Burrow) Original Score - Soul (alternate: Mank) Original Song - lo si (The Life Ahead) (alternate: Speak Now - One Night in Miami) --> honestly all 5 could win, this is v. open  imma go with this being Diane's time tho! Sound - Sound of Metal (alternate: Mank) Production Design - The Father (alternate: Mank) --> Mank is the fave here so imma take a risk predicting The Father Cinematography - Nomadland (alternate: Mank) Makeup & Hairstyling - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (alternate: Pinocchio) Costume Design - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (alternate: Emma) Editing - Sound of Metal (alternate: Nomadland) Visual Effects - Tenet (alternate: The One & Only Ivan) --> I feel like Tenet is gonna lose and we'll get a shock win, but the other 4 all seem so weak  whew that was a good year, 17/23 (3 of the 5 I had wrong were my alternatives) :cheer: (damn if only I stuck to predicting the frontunners in production design & live action short film I would've hit 20!). Wasn't close to going for McDormand, H.E.R., Mank in cinematography & Colette in documentary short. Idk why I didn't predict H.E.R. when she wins every music industry award that exists ever. Not surprised at the Hopkins win at all. Everything just seemed to work out perfectly for that to happen, The Father's surge in competitiveness & acclaim in the past few weeks, the multiple wins at BAFTA's + Hopkins win, Ma Rainey tanking at Oscar noms by missing picture/screenplay (when everyone was predicting both), the more & more rising buzz people were happy knowing Boseman would win but voting Hopkins as they were the one voters were beyond passionate about, the Close/Colman race parallels from 2 years ago, the best picture nom/best actor winner correlation stat. I'm glad I stuck with my gut feeling on that prediction and at least Boseman will always have an Oscar nomination  McDormand!!! Whew we stan that crazy category. She won for producing as well so she now has more Oscars than Meryl :o
April 26, 20214 yr Massive OOPS at the Best Pic to Best Actress to Best Actor mess up, especially when they didn't include Chadwick in the Memorium! Yikes! They should've still done the tribute and celebration of his life, even if he didn't win!
April 26, 20214 yr UamELF1MyN0 Robbed This performance actually made me cry! Why aren’t those girls in bed?! That display was stunning - assume they told all the locals it was happening! And the northern lights 😍
April 26, 20214 yr Husavik should have won! Agree they were robbed! Denmark winning best international movie yay!
April 26, 20214 yr Husavik should have won! Agree they were robbed! Denmark winning best international movie yay! I’ve just listened to the winning song and whilst I like the theme of it, Husavik was definitely robbed
April 26, 20214 yr Lol, I have no desire to ever watch these, I like watching the films and the lists and stats and stuff, but only to that much. The shows are often not even an entertaining mess enough to watch the highlights. I did think if there were to be a surprise, it would be Best Actor. Not undeserved at all for Hopkins as he was so convincing in such a challenging role to get right, and at his age, it honestly could well be his last one. Just seems such a shame for Boseman, especially given he knew he was dying when he played the role. I legit really think it should've been a joint one! Anyway, not a whole lot of surprises, but I can't say any were undeserved (and ooh I was right about Frances McDormand *.). Particularly really pleased for Chloe Zhao for breaking boundaries in that category. If nothing else, I do think this has been a pleasingly diverse year for the Oscars and I really hope they keep it up.
