The Gayle King Show ~ February 24th 2011

On this day 10 years ago, Gaga appeared on The Gayle King Show to discuss the Born This Way album. The show was broadcasted live on the internet. On the show, Gaga revealed that she will be releasing two "Born This Way" music videos; one on February 28, 2011 comprised of the main version of the song, and a second video comprised of a "stripped down version of the song" which will be released on iTunes following the first.

The second video obviously never surfaced but we are now only a few days away from the official first (and only x) video from premiering so hype was big.

Gaga releases the music video for 'Born This Way' ~ 27th February 2011

On this day, 10 years ago, Gaga released the music video for the lead single and the first of 5 music videos to be released this era! Nick Knight directed the video, which was inspired by surrealist painters like Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon. In the video, Gaga is depicted as giving birth to a new race culminating in a conclusion with the view of a city populated by this race.

Fernando Garibay explained that the video "is of cultural relevance, and hopefully helps people that are an outcast, bullied. Hopefully makes people aware that it's OK to be yourself."

Laurieann Gibson stated that: "When she played it for me, it took me a while to find out the visual interpretation that I could give back to her. And so I woke up one night and I got it, and I said, 'I got it: We have to birth a new race.' From the gate, Gaga was like, 'I want Nick Knight for this video. I want a visual.' She was always birthing something visual in her head, and Nick Knight is just, well, he's prolific but he's so genius. It was about pushing the bar of what a music video should be and can be. [...] It's a different time; it's a different era; there are no limits. It is a viral message. I think that there's something in there for everyone, and that's what's so amazing about the video and so specific about the message."

The video features full-bodied tattooed model Rick Genest (Rico), better known by his stage name Zombie Boy. Gaga painted her face in a similar way to Genest, in one of the main series of sequences. She said that the sequences displayed the fact that she would not allow society or critics to dictate her sense of beauty: "I tell you what I think is beauty, and hence the scene was of me and Rico defining ourselves in artistic way and not relying on society to dictate it".

Have another watch of the legendary video below:

What are your thoughts on it, 10 years on?

I rewatched the video twice yesterday! It's got so many moments. My favourite part are the heads in the lab? And ofc the scenes with Rick

"Scheiße" (Mugler Mix by DJ White Shadow)

"Government Hooker" (Mugler Mix by DJ White Shadow)

Gaga releases second single Judas

Lady_Gaga_-_Judas_(single).png

10 years ago Lady Gaga released “Judas“ as the second single from her album, Born This Way. The song was likened to Bad Romance and dealt with Gaga falling in love with someone who had betrayed her. It embodies the incidents that have haunted Gaga in the past, and its core meaning refers to the negative parts of her life that she cannot escape from. Gaga explained that the song was also about honoring one's inner darkness in order to bring oneself into the light.

The artwork for the single was created by Gaga on Microsoft Word(!). The single caused a heap of controvery, no less because it was released so close to Holy Week and Easter. The song was received with middling success, especially when compared to her previous singles. It peaked top 10 in the UK and US (where it is certified 2x platinum).

On the song, Gaga states: "'Judas' is a metaphor and an analogy about forgiveness and betrayal and things that haunt you in your life and how I believe that it's the darkness in your life that ultimately shines and illuminates the greater light that you have upon you. Someone once said to me, 'If you have no shadows then you're not standing in the light.' So the song is about washing the feet of both good and evil and understanding and forgiving the demons from your past in order to move into the greatness of your future. I just like really aggressive metaphors—harder, thicker, darker—and my fans do as well. So it is a very challenging and aggressive metaphor, but it is a metaphor."

I remember loving Judas on first listen. It's so in your face and undeniably brash! It didn't quite have the same impact as the singles that preceeded it and even now, it doesn't rank too highly in terms of my rankings of her singles but every time I hear it, it provides me with a great frantic energy.

It should not have been the album's second single looking back - there were a plethroa of other choices she could have gone for from this seminal album.

The Microsoft Word artwork though? We are not worthy

I remember listening to this for the first time with my then boyfriend (who I care to forget exists now), he wasn't impressed but was becoming quite anti-Gaga around this point. I really quite liked it on the first listen but that chorus did take a couple of plays to get my head around.

I do really believe it's a better song than 'Born This Way', although in hindsight perhaps not the smartest single choice.

This is a bop forever, how she changes her singing through the song, how the STEPS chorus just goes deep and especially I love the breakdown. I CLING TOOOO!

Whoever voted this out in the singles survivor is crzy!
