February 4, 20214 yr None of Madonna's BIG hits are forgotten though, she is literally has the chance of doing the biggest Glastonbury slot ever with her big hits 1. Holiday 2. Borderline 3. Like a virgin 4. Material girl 5. Crazy for you 6. Into the groove 7. Live to tell 8. Papa don't preach 9. True blue 10. La Isla Bonita 11. Open your heart 12. Like a prayer 13. Express yourself 14. Cherish 15. Vogue 16. Justify my love 17. Erotica 18. Don't cry for me Argentina 19. Frozen 20. Ray of light 21. Music 22. Don't tell me 23. American pie 24. Hung up 25. 4 Minutes Out of these EVERY song would be instantly recognisably by the majority of the viewing public. Tell me any other living act who has a list of that many songs that recognisable... Elton John maybe?? Oh, I completely agree with you. She has a phenomenal discography...though I don't think she'll ever do a full setlist of top to bottom hits. I'm a big fan, but I don't think I've been to a concert by another legendary artist who is quite as uninterested in their most famous material. I didn't get to catch her most recent Madame X tour...but...(sorry other fans), it's super weird to me that more than half of that setlist is made up of Madame X songs/other tracks that aren't her own hits when she has such an incredible background in pop. I'm not saying she shouldn't do any current album material. It's just...these albums aren't impacting the world on the level of Ray Of Light and Confessions at this point. There's been such damage to her reputation lately, I kinda think the way to rehab the image is to lean on the hits and finally give the people what they want. But. She's definitely not going to do that... Aaaaand. I say all that while acknowledging this seems to be an incredibly unpopular viewpoint among the fanbase...similar to my support of solo Spice songs at group gigs. Lol...

Madonna playing various songs from her latest album - which the tour is about - is a bad thing? She has played the same hit songs millions of times, and tour set lists are not meant to be jukebox spectacles (unless you are doing, say, a Greatest Hits tour)... Personally, I am happy that tour set lists are put together in a way that forms a narrative of where the artist is artistically at that time. Madonna already did Greatest Hits tours - the reinvention tour and the one after Celebration... YES, festivals like Glasto are where the artists should focus a bit more on hits as it makes sense there. Doesnt mean they shouldnt play album tracks - they should, and all of them do. But in their own tours? Do you really need another tour where Madonna plays most of her classics AGAIN? After 30 years of playing the same hit songs over and over again both on tours and on promotional gigs?... Thank god for tours where albums get a look in. I was sad to have missed the Madam X tour (couldnt justify the money to be honest) but I cant wait for the DVD as I am excited for the spectacle that she build around that album. I'm such a frustrated fan of the girls lol They have a very small catalogue and everyone has heard their 10 hits multiple times on multiple tours, TV shows, Olympics, etc. It's one of the reasons I thought the Return tour was so shit, as there was no space/focus for their catalogue, only the hits again. Bring on the album songs being performed in places like Glastonbury, for once. It was a much welcomed and needed part of the 2019 tour and it worked really well. Lets continue to expand on it rather than revert back to the same songs over and over again...
February 5, 20214 yr Madonna playing various songs from her latest album - which the tour is about - is a bad thing? She has played the same hit songs millions of times, and tour set lists are not meant to be jukebox spectacles (unless you are doing, say, a Greatest Hits tour)... I know I just said I find it weird, but really, her playing songs from her latest album isn't necessarily a "bad" thing for me. I guess I'm talking more a public perception thing. The most recent time I saw her was the Rebel Heart tour. That set list basically went...open with four songs the crowd (by and large) didn't know. A few quick lines of Vogue. Two more songs the crowd didn't know. True Blue on a ukulele. And so on. I wouldn't say *I* didn't enjoy it. I'm a genuine fan. I knew everything she brought out. But the people I brought to the show and the people sitting around us were largely bewildered by it. The perception wasn't exactly helped by the fact she went on more than three hours late. I think there's a bit of this. When you're more than a decade and three albums past having hits...and you have pretty much the best back catalogue in pop, I think you kinda have to evaluate the balance of new stuff and hits at some point. Or not. Obviously, she's had an amazing touring career. Her crowds are getting smaller. That could be by choice. But her image has definitely been damaged in the past few years...and I'm not sure her directing her own movie is going to help that. All's I'm saying is...a hit-filled setlist of her doing what she does best might go a long way toward building her back up. Edited February 5, 20214 yr by Piers
February 5, 20214 yr Woudnt that be more for the sexism and ageism? Also, as many have pointed out here, all acts play album tracks - even solo tracks - on their tours which most in attendance wont know much about. It's ok, it's part of the experience. It bothers me that people go to concerts - specially the artists' own tours - expecting to hear only the hits  It's like 'Yes Brenda, the Spice Girls play more than their 10 hit singles on a full concert, so what? The Killers have exactly 1 song that you know and you still go and get shit faced to Mr Brightside and never complain if Brendan Flowers sang 4 covers at their gigs do you?' -_-

There’s a big difference between going to a Killers concert a still relevant album selling act than going to a Madonna one where her latest album has sold like 30k. Elton John fills his setlist with hits and then the odd album tracks as does Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi... I’ve seen them all and their set lists were more singles than anything else. it’s about engaging the audience sending them home feeling good wanting to see them again. Ps all these acts are male so it’s not sexism... they are also old so it is agism 🤣 I’m not saying Madonna should perform the hits just that people can’t be surprised if general fans go expecting to hear all these amazing songs and have a great time but then leave thinking well that was shit I barely knew anything. What she should do though is stop being so rude and disrespectful to fans by coming on 2-3 hours late. I haven’t bought an album of hers since MDNA partly because it was shit and partly because of the fact I spent a months wage travelling to see her in concert and she was 3 hours late and cut the show short... I’ve no desire to support a woman who thinks that little of her fans. Edited February 5, 20214 yr by spiceboy
February 5, 20214 yr Yep her being late is awful indeed. I would much rather have a proper thought out tour set list, which goes on a narrative than just a collection of hits. I get it that people want the classics but as an artist, that is a pretty superficial thing to do... I would hate, HATE to have to consistently play the hits for decades without exploring the album that I created in a live setting properly just so that some audience members get their kicks. Like, I get it but honestly the experience of going to a concert is that you get to know the artist in their full glory, not just the hits. It is one of the best things about the live experience and one of the best things about art: you get to explore and get to know something new, experience new things. Anyway, I think we are diverting too much here now...

I do agree with everything you've said, but that is as a big fan of Madonna, I deeply regret I didn't see the Confessions Tour for this reason I can just imagine how amazing it was to see that in person. However as a more general fan I could also understand being somewhat bored if you hadn't invested in the album the tour was supporting.
February 5, 20214 yr Considering that the audience is not just fans... the show would have some adaptations like... less ballads and more dancing tracks. Some tracks could be redesigned to have a more disco and rock vibe. Based on the SW2019 tour, I believe that a perfect set list would be something like this: Act 1 Spice Up Your Life If You Cant Dance Who Do You Think You Are Do It Something Kinda Funny + extended end instrumental. Act 2 Move Over Video Interlude like SW19 - live band version this time. Step To Me - Rockier version Mel B solo (Sharp Dressed Man ZZ top Cover) Act 3 The Lady is a Vamp Too Much Say´ll Be There Mel C solo - Blame It On Me Act 4 Video Interlude - Last Time Lover and Naked redesigned with Erotica or Justify My Love´s madonna sample - Dancers on stage - leads to: Holler redesigned + Extended End Right Back At instrumental Act 5 Emma Solo - Baby Please Dont stop Stop Love Thing 2 become 1 Act 6 Tango + Viva Forever Act 7 If You Wanna Have Some Fun video Interlude - Something like the 'Girls Thanks' vídeo Never Give Up On The Good Times Wannabe Spice Up Your Life instrumental encore
February 6, 20214 yr Author I think IF there were any solo moments or group covers of solo songs, it would have to be one of their big hits, no covers and certainly nothing more recent that the audience wouldn't know.

I think Never Give Up On The Good Times, specially with Viva Forever on its own and the If You Wanna Have Some Fun/Never Give Up On The Good Times combo for the encore makes total sense!!

February 6, 20214 yr Finally a great set list. Each set up could have a costume change and some new mixes to make the songs fit the genre more. Thank you. Yes I tried to group the songs that most sit well with each other. I think singing the verses of LTL and the chorus with Naked would work with a bodysuit look followed by Love Thing and finishing with 2B1 would be iconic.
February 6, 20214 yr I'm hoping they go for it with a tour and some shows in 2022, including Glastonbury as unfortunately 2021 is pretty much written off for live music.
