Oh love that version!! I think the original album version flows a bit better but the demo is edgier. I think this should've been a bit higher in the countdown but they are all aces!

She needs to stop messing up the songs, if it's done, it's done, don't touch it anymore, leave it as it is. I understand that she is a perfectionist, but sometimes less is more.

My biggest enemy is me

| 07 // 911 // 8.34

The third single (of sorts~), '911' is out next with an impressive average. Preceded by "Chromatica II", it garnered a lot of attention as the two songs became an internet meme. It eventually had a music video released which was one of Gaga's most daring pieces; an insight into her mental health and battle with antipsychotic medication, the video too a surreal dreamscape tone that ended with a shocking twist. The song itself also tells of her battles with medicaiton and offers her truth in hypnotic fashion. In the recording of the song, Gaga insisted that the studio be near pitch-black to allow her to relive the pain she went through that the lyrics explore. On Spotify, Gaga states: "I take an anti-psychotic. I have neuropathic pain and regular trauma responses. In order to keep me safe from addiction I am not permitted to take any pain pills, so I take this instead. Do not take anti-psychotic unless directed to do so by your doctor, as I do not wish to glamorize anguish."

Could this love protect me from the pain?

| 06 // Stupid Love // 8.52

Another single out, and not just any - the LEAD single and the introduction to the era. 'Stupid Love' was a huge departure from what we had known from Gaga the years previously and it showed a stark contrast to the vibes of the A Star is Born soundtrack. It's an all-out party, feel-good pop banger. About falling in love again after a heartbreak, the song showed Gaga was able to hark back to her roots and bring us to the dancefloor once more. After it initially leaked, the song was eventually released to a great reception both critically and commercially, becoming a top 5 hit in the UK and the US. The music video showed rival tribes battling in Chromatica but kindness winning in the end. On Spotify Gaga stated: "The core issue that's been the driving connective force behind all things I do is love. I've always wanted it, and can never have enough of it. I've been told I'm a love addict. Fine. I'm addicted to love. Is that so bad? Because isn't there freedom in simply acknowledging that my need for love is a bottomless pit?"

It is a big shock tbh - I expected around 4th for it :o

Still, I love the song. It's joyous and uplifting everytime I hear it. The video is one of her weakest though imo~

This is an incredible top 5, to be honest. All tracks are incredible, even if Replay is slightly behind the others in my own affections - as much as I love it!

The monster inside you is torturing me

| 05 // Replay // 8.70

Kicking off the top 5 it's what has become a fan-favourite of sorts, the undeniable 'Replay'. The song seems to return to the Monster era both literally and in terms of its outlandish production and huge vocals. The song is Gaga's exploration of how trauma and pain can make someone braver. She clarifies that the song isn't about little monsters, but the song does oddly seem to mention them as her vocals seem to blur "your" and "little" so the two are indistinguishable. However the song seems to actually be about a toxic, perhaps abusive relationship where pain and trauma are on replay, eventually scarring Gaga's mind. Even when being away from the monster in her life, the trauma returns and haunts her both physically and mentally. It's a rip-roaring song with an explosive chorus and irresistable production. On Spotify Gaga states: "I refused to not allow this song to be on the album. Sure, I'm the "boss". But really Chromatica cannot exist without an abstract explanation of what it's like to be triggered if you have PTSD. It's a replay of all my monsters, not the little ones. And the very thing that has plagued my mind for years, trauma, is precisely the thing that now powers my life force to be braver. i.e. this voice I hear: "continue to make music although your brain feels like it's breaking sometimes"".

It's a brilliant track and very worthy of top 5. I am glad it hasn't beaten any of the others in the running though, so all-in-all I'm happy
