Robbie Williams movie 'Better Man': Cast, release date, plot, songs and more revealed

Updated: 17 June 2022, 14:37

Robbie Williams is one of the biggest selling UK artists of all time. And now the 48-year-old from Stoke's life story will be played out on the silver screen in a big-budget biopic entitled Better Man Robbie Williams and Australian filmmaker Michael Gracey, who directed the box-office smash The Greatest Showman, are in charge of the project and cast and crew are said to have descended on Melbourne, Australia to start filming.

With news that the movie is well on its way, we bring you everything you need to know about the former Take That star's film's plot, cast, soundtrack, release date and more.

What do we know so far about Robbie Williams' 'Better Man' !

The film has been billed as 'a musical fantasy' and is being filmed in the Docklands Studios in Melbourne throughout 2022. Back in December 2021, director Michael Gracey made an official announcement that the Robbie Williams film was being made. "To tell Robbie William’s beautiful, distinct story, back home, in my own city, is a dream come true," he enthused. "There is a creative energy that burns across the Melbourne film industry, and I know this movie will thrive here." In typical Robbie Williams style, the singer hasn't held back in revealing the ups and downs behind the making of the film. Speaking about the biopic to fans at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena earlier this month, Robbie said: "‘The thing is about films is that it is a wonder anything gets made. ‘Everything gets held up in a bottleneck. It is always, “This person says no and this person says yes and this person is offended and this person is not offended enough.” It is agents and lawyers."

Who will star in Robbie Williams' 'Better Man' !

Robbie Williams is apparently set to star as himself in the new movie about his life. The 48-year-old from Stoke will take the lead role and British actor Jonno Davies, 29, from Amazon series Hunters, will play the younger version of Robbie. Other confirmed cast members include Australian actors Kate Mulvany, who starred in The Great Gatsby, Damon Herriman (Mr InBetween), and filmmaker-actor Anthony Hayes.

'Better Man' soundtrack: What songs will be in the film !

Insiders are being secretive about what will appear on the soundtrack to the Robbie Williams movie. With smash hits including 'Angels', 'She's The One', 'Supreme', 'Feel', 'Rock DJ' and many more to choose from, producers may be struggling to reduce them down to just a few! Speaking to Deadline in 2021, Gracey confirmed the songs will be adapted for the film.

“All Robbie’s songs will be re-sung, for the emotion of the moment,” he said. "If he’s in the depths of despair, he’s not going to sing a song as cabaret flamboyant showmanship; it’s going to be broken, acapella, stripped down, because that’s where he is emotionally. In moments of pure joy, you’ll get songs sung in this whirlwind of hysteria. "So essentially every song in the film, Robbie will sing, but it will be performed for the emotion of that moment, and that scene.”

There has been no official release date yet for Robbie Williams' Better Man. However, the film, which started production in May 2022, is likely to be released at the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.

When have you heard Guy's LP last time?

You defo need again. Very beautiful music.

I've done it tonight :)

Check out this Better Man version and just imagine this like an Intro to the film.

Without Robbie's voice, just music.

I think that could be an epic from the beginning...

Hmm. I have some idea for future.

Went to see Elvis the movie tonight -it was excellent in that it had a very good actor impersonating all of Elvis's iconic shows and moves. It was imitation rather than interpretation.

Of the three biopics I've seen - it's my favourite but that is largely because EP is my favourite out of him, Queen and Elton John.

Will be interesting to see how the RW one compares.

I saw the trailer of the Elvis Bio Laura, it did look good . I enjoyed the Queen one but not Elton which failed to keep me interested . I have seen other docs on Elton which I really enjoyed.

I think the Nobody Someday will be hard to beat but we might be very well surprised.

I would recommend it Tess -it was excellent.

It's mad to think that Elvis's career only lasted 23 years while he was alive.

He could have had another 20 years making music -_-

Elvis had a life that was not his own , he was used & abused as far as I can remember . I doubt that would happen these days, I like to think that artists nowadays have more control of their own destinies .

Robbie Williams says he didn’t want to be the ‘only c***’ in Take That biopic

‘If I rewrite everybody to be lovely, then I’m the only arsehole, and I can’t be having that’

Robbie Williams has opened up about the forthcoming biopic Better Man. The former Take That singer will star as himself in the film, which is due to be released next year.

Directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, Better Man will also feature fictionalised depictions of his Take That bandmates Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Jason Orange. According to Williams, a Take That reunion is very much on the cards, but it may depend on how his former bandmates react to the biopic.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “How [the band] receive it will have a lot to do with what happens next. If this film was my life from 2010 to 2022, it would be a love letter to Gary Barlow. But I speak in the film how I thought when I was 16, 17, 18. “We have a very complicated relationship, me and the boys. A loving and jovial relationship, but I will always be the youngest, the runt of the litter.”

While he insisted that he didn’t wish to “open up old wounds”, Williams added that he didn’t want to “restrict [himself] from a truth” that was his, “of its time”.

“I mean, listen, I can’t be the only c*** in the film,” he continued. “If I rewrite everybody to be lovely, then I’m the only arsehole, and I can’t be having that.”

I think there might be a few people who will be twitching when this comes out . He refers to a diary entry back in 1996 in one of those interviews he did recently , I wonder if he wrote down everything that happened over the years which I feel he did , would make for very interesting reading :)
