Even most of the Spice 25 numbers after an entire year are abysmal.
I don't think these anniversary releases serve anything to the streaming audience in the big picture. Is there a re-release/anniversary release that has had any remarkable success because of it on Spotify? It's all about sales and physical formats.

This is the case. It is all sales and physical formats, also downloads at best.

These anniversary releases often only hold one or two weeks in the Top200 anyway, and are heavily front-loaded. Look at George Michael's latest one which went #2-OUT straight away.

They are not million sellers, but they do provide a lot of fan service, which is nice. Just a shame that Spiceworld25 seems to be the least interesting one out there <_<

When you think about a demo it is nice to hear for fans but it isn't going to replace the original on playlists or be a go to for anyone, same with live tracks

Remixes are only successful if they are done by a top name producer or completely change a song from say ballad to dance song and it is like hearing a new song.

Feed your love has done 600k plays but isn't on there main playlist (this is) so those plays are all people actively going on the Spice25 album to play it.

This is all true. They won't prioritize demos and old remixes because they want the focus to be on the main music, not old demos.

If they do something different/new, like Elton John and Madonna have been doing with their old hits (like, Elton got Dua Lipa and Britney to do new remixes of his old songs, Madonna has collaborated with new artists all together to release new remixes), then they will get much better results.

However, the Spice and Spiceworld25 campaigns are not on that level, it is all about packaging the old stuff with a couple of bonus/unheard demos and live tracks across them. It is not going to ignite millions to go hunt for them, nor is it going to get playlisted properly on streaming platforms. For that, they need to do deals with the platforms, and/or create something new.

Feed Your Love got playlisted on Spotify's New Music Friday, which was a surprise for a demo, and clearly it came because it was previously unreleased AND they also had a deal with Spotify at the time. Step To Me is included in the All Out 90s playlist (6million listeners) because it was a popular song released in the 90s. That's all so far from these campaigns. None of the remixes got included in any official playlisting, as far as I know.

Plus, the horrible sound quality of the live tracks means that none of us will hunt for them on streaming. That just wont happen...

All out 90s playlist updated at midnight with the Spice Girls the cover and Wannabe song #1. Two things, it will obviously push up Wannabe's streams daily, I think when it was last like this before Spice25 Wannabe was getting over 500k streams a day. It should also push up their monthly listeners which I expect to climb.

The timing is also interesting, why not last week before SW25 release. Could just be a coincidence but it is something I would expect before a forthcoming announcement.

Gosh, enough with the obession with Wannabe.....

It is kind of a pity that Wannabe as its own entity now massively overshadows the Spice Girls in every respect (apart from them actually going on tour, perhaps, but even then I imagine a driving force for a lot of casual ticket buyers is to see Wannabe performed?).

Of course Wannabe was always their most massive song, but in the 90s I never felt like the song completely outweighed everything else they did. They felt huge overall, all their other singles felt like massive hits too (from a UK perspective, at least). Even in 2007, in the UK, 2 Become 1's total sales were about 90% of Wannabe's total, but in 2022 it's more like 60% because of streaming giving Wannabe such a tremendous boost. The gap between the exposure of these songs is even more significant on Spotify - 2 Become 1's total streams are just 14% of Wannabe's.

I won't completely begrudge Wannabe for continuing to be a huge song for them, but I wish it wasn't the be all and end all for the Spice Girls in the eyes of so many people, or companies like Spotify. Other singles deserve more of a push too.

Other artists whose Greatest Hits are pretty much permenently in the UK Top 200 albums chart seem to have an array of well regarded singles that have similar streaming levels. For Spice Girls it seems Wannabe is so far ahead to the point that other singles are relatively left in the dust, that it means their Greatest Hits is usually absent from the charts.

Yep, the way that Wannabe gets pushed by the label, the girls and the streaming services whilst paying absolute DUST to their other massive songs, is so sad...

It is almost like the other singles arent some of the biggest songs ever released...

It is frustrating to say the very least.

I would say (with AIWFCIY) Wannabe is the defining song of the 90s though. It perfectly embodies the start of a pop revolution from the mid 90s to early 2000s.

So I don't think it is any labels or the girls fault, just when you are asked for songs that have to be on a 90s playlist or sum up the 90s Wannabe is a must song and top of most people's lists. Non of their other singles feel like that.

A Christmas mix of 2 become 1 would certainly help it get to that sort of status. Right now it is felt like a song people link with Christmas not a Christmas song.

Spice Up Your Life will probably reach 100million streams on Spotify this week or next

Such an iconic song that deserves so much better than what their record company does with it -_-

Their record company has just commissioned an alternative music video for it. What more did you expect?

For the record company to push Spice Up Your Life and other iconic singles more across the board?... The alternative video is cute but it is just a fan-service thing. I'm talking about the record company promoting the songs to a wider audience other than just front-loading Wannabe at all costs and all the time.

  • 2 weeks later...

Spice Up Your Life finally surpassed 100million streams on the Spotify platform. It is now their 5th song to do so, and they finally have a full Top5 of songs with more than 100million streams each!

@1594331407177875458

Here's a list of all the Spice Up Your Life official versions Spotify, from the group's account. It has 20 songs, but there are other versions of the song in albums of varied compositions such as those Now compilations and other type of releases. There's just too many of those lol

Feel like the girls don’t help this situation though. Wannabe is always always their focus when they had 6/7 really massive selling singles that the public clearly know. They should focus on them just as much but they don’t, it’s always wannabe. It’s no wonder its streaming has propelled compared to the others!

 I wish the other singles could get even half as much attention!

We're (almost) at 100,000,000 for Spice Up Your Life, but I feel like it should have managed that ages ago! There's quite a lot of 90s/00s hits that weren't anywhere near as massive as Spice Up Your Life was, certainly globally, but they have way more Spotify streams which suggests better playlisting, being more remembered, or both. One example... Westlife - My Love has 153,000,000 <_< Which is actually more than any non-Wannabe Spice Girls song has achieved.
