GaGa in 2013 had FAR more prospects at gettinf a np.1 than today ... with the right music.

It's harder now with streaming the driving force but in terms of public affection, that's definitely stronger right now than it was following/during the ARTPOP era.

I think Michael is correct that she had more power to achieve a number one back then but more so had the material on Artpop been better. It's not bad by any means but when you compare the first two albums singles and then BTWs too, ArtPop pales in comparison.

She DESTROYED her own reputation with pretentious comments, which got people's backs up, and then by releasing the wrong singlws - Judas was a yuge misstep, and Applause even more so! I can see both sides of this being true. Yes she had more power or a bigger pull back in 2013 but I don’t think anything from ArtPop would’ve got her a #1.

 

Saying all of that though I would gladly welcome Act II or any unreleased material as part of an anniversary release.

I agree she'd gradually sabotaged her reputation by that point and she had better options than to come back with than 'Applause', but she was basically seen as a joke in 2013 and the public were gunning for her. The amount of negative press and ridicule she was receiving was something else and I'm not convinced that even releasing the best song she had would have made any material difference.

 

She's definitely now A) in a stronger position as her most recent chart performances prove and B) looked upon more favourably by the general public after restoring her career with A Star is Born, having genuine hits from the Chromatica campaign and also having two sold-out stadium shows.

Applause was the only possible option for ARTPOP's lead single, that's why Gaga's label put their foot down and said it would be that song and no other. Gypsy wouldn't do shit on the charts.
