I genuinely think both the Ne-Yo and Script songs are horrific, so it's a shame P!nk didn't get it.

Poor Alice Deejay too, Wasteoflife really did rob so many potentially great number ones.

Are these ordered by their sales numbers? Quite a dramatic increase already within just the first 3 songs if so!

I do remember that week of Ne-Yo, The Script and P!nk all having huge debuts at the same time, definitely felt like all 3 deserved to be #1 hits - at least 2/3 did get to be in the end!

Songs are ordered by the weeks they would have been no 1 in their respective year with those sales. Then by sales themselves.
Interested to see if we get more 1981 weeks as there seemed to be a lot in the first batch!

104. LOST IN MUSIC- Sister Sledge (74,000) #4

P2lz1zf.jpg

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1984

Originally a No 17 hit in 1979 this single was written and produced by Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards of Chic and it was Rogers who remixed the song in 1984 to score a much bigger hit with it. It was still over 100k behind the No 1 at that time which was the million selling “I Just Called To Say I Love You”.

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1984

In the same week as Sister Sledge hit No 4 these lot were one place higher with what at this point was their highest charting single. Helped by not being available on any album, this was the lead track from the “Unforgettable Fire” era and features Chrissie Hynde on backing vocals, despite errors in the lyrics regards the specifics, it is about Martin Luther King.

102. TRASH- Suede (86,000) #3

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1996

Selling 86,000 copies in a week gives you a good shot at the top spot in most weeks over the last 35 years but unfortunately Suede choose a week in which they were running against the Spice Girls and the first single by a newly solo Robbie Williams, the outcome? Third spot of course. This was the group’s first release post Bernard Butler (he actually left in 1994 but composed all tracks on their last album) and saw them ride the Britpop wave.

Trash!!!

I would never have expected to see Suede in here so that's such a nice surprise. A shame in retrospect that they didn't get a #1 in a different week then, their Coming Up album is excellent indie pop.

Crazy That Suede did so much, never had guessed

And now sadly if they’d release a new single the’d probably sell 1 copy on itunes :/

What was the rest of the Top 3 in sales?

I guess the spice girls will feature alot here as the preventors.
Trash is probably my favourite track to feature here so far, didn't know it sold so much!
Did not expect to see Trash here. This thread is going to throw up a lot of unexpected songs. Amazing that it would have been number 1 in more than 20% of the years weekly charts. And probably enough to get to number 2 in a further handful of weeks too.

Trash!

Definitely my favourite track featured in the list so far and I honestly never knew that its sales were so good. Shame they didn't pick a different week, would have been a great #1. I can accept the Spice Girls but injustice that it was beaten by Robbie murdering Freedom.

150k and 146k

actually impressed at Robbie's awful cover doing 148K

bit unlucky for him being so close to Wannabe

but still amazed at Suede, that they could sell so many singles on 1st week, that's a lot of fans

101.HARD TO SAY I’M SORRY- Chicago (87,000) #4

gqDU7yg.jpg

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1982

Despite a history stretching back to the late 60s and consisting of 24 studio albums and almost 40 in total, Chicago only have 7 charted singles in the UK including the No 1 “If You Leave Me Now” from 1976. Back in 1982 however they certainly sold enough copies to make the top with “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” the lead track from their 13th album confusingly called “Chicago 16”. It was a US no 1 but could only make No 4 here, 1982 is, incidentally, the most featured year on this rundown oddly!

100. TOGETHER AGAIN- Janet Jackson (91,000) #4

No 1 in 11 weeks in 1997

Inspired by the loss of a good friend to AIDS, this was Jackson’s second release from the “Velvet Rope” album and became her 12th top 10 single in 11 years. Buoyed by the festive period the song flew off the shelves and became not only her biggest seller but also even a potential chart topper in the strongest year for sales of the 90s.

And I thought it would be 1981 lol, wonder if there’s a reason for that? Just the exploding sales of the era perhaps?
