56. YOUNG GUNS (GO FOR IT)- Wham! (99,000) #3

No 1 in 16 weeks in 1982

George Michael's first hit got caught up in the demise of The Jam who were then one of the biggest groups in the UK so understandably it stumbled on its way to the top of the pile. Famously it got its break on TOTP when the show let them appear despite being outside the top 40 after Marvin Gaye pulled out of a performance of “Sexual Healing”.

55. CENTERFOLD- J Geils Band (101,000) #3

A six week US Chart topper it was pretty much all they’re remembered for in the UK, a tale of a man who finds that his teenage crush has since been in an adult magazine and in torn between sadness and lust- they don’t write songs about that anymore do they?

54. WIND BENEATH MY WINGS- Steve Houghton (109,000) #3

No 1 in 16 weeks in 1997

Late 97 is, as may know, a time of massive sales with one of the most concentrated examples of million sellers. The week this entered at No 3 the top 11 contained 5 future million sellers including Aqua and the charity version of “Perfect Day” both of which were ahead of Steve Houghton in this particular week, otherwise 109,000 is easily a chart topping tally, all helped by Houghton’s role in “London’s Burning” which made him, briefly, a bit of a heartthrob.

Centerfold is a great song.

Londons Burning was great sunday night TV :)

Yes, love 'Centerfold'! I've never watched London's Burning and don't really remember Steven Houghton but great sales for a #3.

53. SLAM JAM- WWF Superstars (45,000) #4

Tipped for the Christmas No 1 in 1992 by some including Pete Waterman (who was never shy about bigging up one of his own tracks) this was written and produced by Stock & Waterman and has the hand of Simon Cowell in the mix too. Anyway it didn’t make the top (thanks Whitney- that should have secured your place in Heaven if nothing else did) this did sell in alarming amounts for 7 days at least.

52. ME!- Taylor Swift Featuring Brendon Urie (65,761) #3

With a full on pastel toned explosion of colour this marked Swift’s new “Lover” era upon release and sold more than “Look What You Made Me Do” in either of its weeks at No 1. It claimed back (from Ariana Grande) the record for most views on vevo in its first 24 hours so clearly the world was eager but Stormzy and Lil Nas X had other plans for her in the UK charts.

Never heard of that 'Slam Jam' song and not sure my life is any better for knowing it exists now...

'ME!' is a little overhated imo but still definitely not worthy of being one of her highest charting songs.

51. BANG BANG- Will.i.am (80,156) #3

Composed for the film “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack that perhaps helps to explain the “Charleston” feel. It was his 11th top 10 single but oddly enough his first (and to date only) top 10er as a solo credit and you can see not far off becoming his 5th chart topper.

albeit only by virtue of the female vocalist being uncredited!

and from Sandro Silva and Quintino not demanding artist credits after he shamelessly ripped off their song Epic for the song’s drop.

(I totally forgot how much that song sold that week too, though it did have the help of a Voice performance)

I loved 'Bang Bang' at the time and it felt like a pretty weird song to blow up (certainly more creative than will.i.am's usual standards). Not heard it for ages though and god knows if it still holds up now.

The fact that Taylor Swift song sold so much yet High Hopes couldn't even get Top 10! :(

Not a fan of Bang Bang, there were far better tracks on the Great Gatsby soundtrack that deserved more success. Never heard the WWF song before but it doesn't exactly sound like a masterpiece. Altogether a luckily not #1 selection there.

'High Hopes' presumably has a much higher overall total than 'ME!' at least though, it was just too much of a slow burner to make the top 10 in any one week.

Bang Bang was great, that sale must have been almost entirely off the back of the Voice performance since it was at #42 the week before. Leah McFall impacting the charts again just after her iconic cover of I Will Survive :kink:

Me's chart peak was #3, not #4!

50. I’M IN THE MOOD FOR DANCING- The Nolans (96,000) #3

No 1 in 17 weeks in 1980

Way back to the beginning of this countdown period, The Nolans were the biggest Irish export pre U2 cornering markets all over the globe including a lucrative Japanese chart. This was by far the biggest and most recalled hit of theirs and almost breached the 100,000 mark in January 1980.

49. I QUIT- Bros (59,000) #4

Released at the height of “Brosmania” in the autumn of 1988 “I Quit” may have been their worst performance of the year by only making No 4 but it actually sold more in a 7 day period than any of their other hits that year- odd but true.

48. HOUSE ARREST- Krush (59,000) #3

Long before Moloko Mark Brydon was in this house outfit who in early 1988 scored a top 3 single with this track. It contained a sample of “White Lines” which helped it become one of the first house top 10 singles ever ahead of the second summer of love.
