Well they have no excuse when the stock is sitting there, surely they cant mess that up :o

You’d be surprised!

  • 5 months later...

After listening to the Glitter & Gold: The original Podcast:

• They talked to the producers of the album.

• A top 5 for ‘Lately’ and top 10 for ‘Too far gone’ would’ve paved the way for the album to be released back in the days.

• ‘I’ll wait for you’ was planned as single #3. There was a synopsis for a Christmassy video with reindeers and snow. They also wanted her to go live on TOTP with a piano (creating an ‘Angels’ moment for Lisa).

• They wanted to release the album around Christmas.

• ‘U sure do’ could be a double a with the song mentioned above or as a single release. They mentioned ‘Rush’ as a later on single in the campaign as well.

• ‘Why can’t I’ and ‘C’mon lady’ were also songs recorded for the album.

• Lisa wasn’t the priority for her manager.

Thoughts?

That's really interesting to see there was quite a well thought out plan. From what I have heard (haven't listened to the full album I gave up on it) the album just wasn't strong enough anyway.

I do wonder how she would fare with a release now looking at Claire's success.

A shame for Lisa that the #11 peak for Too Far Gone derailed those plans! I wonder if they would have gone ahead with them even if it had made it to #10 instead? There was so much importance placed on Top 10 in those days!

Lately sold 20,000 copies to be #6, it was 2,000 sales behind the #5.

Too Far Gone, its first week sales are unknown but the #10 sold 12,000 copies.

The album isn’t terrible - certainly no worse or better than artists who actually did have their albums released during that time.

The original plan sounded good but back in those days 1 underperformance counted for a lot which Lisa experienced the hard way.

Hard to know if Lisa released a new album now would it do anywhere near aswell as Claires albums as vocally I don't think Lisa is seen in the same league.

I think if lisa went all out at best she would get low top 10 which would be incredible for her but she literally would have to put in a lot and I mean lots of work to achieve it.

It was very interesting indeed listening to this episode!

I don’t know if a third release would’ve saved the campaign but it’s definitely a shame she didn’t got a chance (and both the singles were very close to top 5/10). Loved the love from the producers for the album and believing in Lisa (something the management lacked which also effected her).

And the album is definitely not that bad. Just some fillers and the genres are a bit over the place if you ask me.

It's not an album I love if I'm honest but had she better management at the time it might have saved her and given her the confidence and opportunity to move onto album two that could have been stronger.

Looking back she had an horrific run with the press which I'd say killed her confidence completly.

Agreed. I don’t think her career would’ve lasted for ages but definitely could’ve been better with some changes/ different events.
Yes her solo career if it had gone right at the beginning was likely to have never really lasted beyond 3 albums but it would have been nice if she had managed one era that we could all say was successful.
I think they saw dwindling success and just gave up straight away on her and never gave her a fair chance plus the press was in no way helpful either.
