This is in no way a final tracklist Colm (nor have I got any kind of sequencing sorted) - but I wanted to play around with a few ideas. This is idea 1 !

Apols for the lack of formatting, I did this all in Paintbrush on my Mac.

Wish I could do stuff like this! :(

6 chart-toppers for me in that 40, I lean more to CD 1 than 2 which has stuff I don't know on it. I can't do my top 40 of 1991 because I've never sorted my "sales" for 1991 through 1993 (work in progress, half-way through 1991) but if I were picking Most-Important tracks of 1991, it would be hard to omit Nirvana, REM, Massive Attack, KLF (Justified & Ancient), Utah Saints, Shamen, The Source/Candi staton. Beyond that I'd prob plump for personal faves, so that'd be OMD's Pandora's Box, Bomb The Bass, Electronic, PM Dawn, Ce Ce, Rozalla, Pet Shop Boys' Streets, Madonna Rescue Me, Kirsty MacColl's Madison, Cathy Dennis, Banderas, Marc Almond's My hand Over My Heart and some others a bit more borderline.

15 is a good match Colm, I didn't expect that much of a crossover between our tastes. *.*

Oh yeah CD2 is dropping more BANGAHs than a clumsy butcher.

I love the font you're using. It's close enough to the font they used on some of the 1993 annual series.

You can!!!

well, I prob could have a go if I buy myself a decent PC - I nearly did it today but PC World had bloody sold out of the one I've had my eyes on for 2 years, and won't be restocking. There's a moral there...

Am I being stupid or should I know what the 59 means in this entry?

3 1 59 RIGHT BESIDE YOU Sophie B. Hawkins

Sorry missed the reply to this, yes, it's as Alex says, Weeks on chart following on from chart peak. I charted songs for over a year long before downloading and streaming made it an actual regular thing

I understand.

It's the font from Now! 30 - which is the earliest Now! that I own and therefore the closest match I could find to 1991 : )

Have you got a tracklist sorted Colm? I'd be interested to see what kind of things you've included that I haven't. Expect The Pixies “Planet of Sound” is there?

I haven't looked at it in a few weeks. Sequencing is tricky.

This is what I have so far (alphabetic by song title)

Mine seems a lot less exciting than yours. I do applaud your second disc. I may steal some of them when I put some time into listening to your selections.

There's a case to be made for creating Now Dance 1991 (and 1992, of course too :D )

Dandy*s fourth set (or did Shoat hack your account?)

Now That's What Dandy* Calls songs that got played to death by Heart FM and Atlantic 252.

No matter which passer-by you pick in the English speaking world there will be songs in this list that they deplore beyond most others. And that same person would also pick a few out and say, with a complete lack of self-awareness that "that's a good pop song".

That is the inherent defect of a list of songs that radio played into an early grave in the 90s. They get played because people like them. And continue to get played until people stop liking them.

Enough of my ponsy "meta-review".

I'm not sure I can think of anything that's missing but, having a flick through the Now albums of the 90s

kd Lang - Constant Craving

Elton John - Sacrifice

Annie Leonnox - Why/Lovesong for a Vampire.

Sometheing from Crowded House

Bee Gees - For Whom the Bell Tolls

Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds

Various Artists - Perfect Day 1997

Personally, I'd have used Come Undone instead of Ordinary World.

Edited by Colm

If I had been responsible for that fourth list, there would definitely have been no Sixpence None The Richer or Toploader which is ghastly sugary slop. Or "Here's Where The Story Ends" which I hate not because it's a terrible song, but because it's the most perfectly average 5/10 song I've ever heard in my life, but FM radio had you believe it was the greatest song in the world ever of all-time never to be beaten.

But pretty much everything else there is of course INCREDIBLE

Oh yes I could deffo make a whole Now Dance 1991 - I mean that is pretty much the basis for my CD2!

That's a good list, I'd also considered Seal and “Such A Feeling” over “Playing With Knives”, but I think the latter is so iconic and easier to sequence- I'd probably say that “Such A Feeling” would perhaps fit better on a rave or dance specific compilation.

I was going for my favourites rather than what's easy to sequence.
  • 1 month later...

An attempt at 1992. CD1 is staying up way past its bedtime and doesn't care about the consequences.. CD2 is all about the start of Britpop with the very first Suede single from May 1992.

Not happy at all with the sequencing but wanted to share my initial tracklist with you!

Also: many will already know this, but the main vocal hook in “Halcyon” is simply the reversed sampled vocal harmony from “It's A Fine Day” so they are naturally next to each other. *.*

I wasn't clubbing in 1992 so I was more pop/rock oriented but I'd cherry pick Motorcycle Emptiness, Weirdo, damn!, Utah saints, Snap!, and chuck in some more:

Movin' On Up Primal Scream

America: What Time Is Love The KLF

Am I The Same Girl Swing Out Sister

Let's Get Rocked Def Leppard

The Days Of Pearly Spencer Marc Almond

Hang On In There Baby Curiosity (Killed The Cat)

Sense The Lightning Seeds/ Terry Hall

Hazard Richard Marx

Ain't No Doubt Jimmy Nail

Even Better Than The Real Thing/ Remix U2

Sleeping Satellite Tasmin Archer

Keep The Faith Bon Jovi

End Of The Road BoyzIIMen

Deeper And Deeper Madonna

Stay Shakespear's Sister

:)

Dr. B - I want to have your babies.

Love the inclusion of Weirdo.

That's a totally refreshing take on 1992. I've sort of stalled on 1991 because I have a lot going on at the moment.

Oooft, “Sleeping Satellite” - that's a good shout. Tasmin Archer did a Q&A for a music forum that I used to be on back in 2006, and I think the question that I remember someone asking (from a Typical chart loon) was 'When “Sleeping Satellite” entered at number 50 did you think it was going to be a number 1?'

Thank u! Yeah I've been working on it in the background for some time, gotta say 1992 has always been a soft spot year for me with so many faves, so it came together really easily. “Papua New Guinea” had to lead Disc 1 rly. : )

I'm a big fan of 1992 - dance music was utterly destroying every other genre.
