in my opinion, it's the label's fault for not investing bigger on Spotify's playlist support, send some checks, make some deals and have the song added to HH

but personally the song is just ok but its not wow song of the summer

But it did get great playlisting initially, from Spotify and Apple Music.

I love Raye and all her music but looking at it from the labels perspective, how long should they keep spending money on her when the songs don’t do well

ERRRR hang on I’m not sticking up for the label I’m just saying to them it’s a business so why would they invest £££ knowing her album isn’t going to sell?!

She had Playlist support! The labels can only do so much, It works on an algorithm based on searches/unique click throughs and how well previous singles have done etc..

I’m really not ‘Sticking’ up for the label more making the point that a label won’t invest if there’s not a penny to be made when they’ve already kept her going for 7 years which is more than most artists get before they are binned for younger ‘More on trend’ artist.

That’s rubbish though! Take iTunes it’s got good Capital and Radio 1 support and it’s 59p and barely top 100!

Then look at Sigrid with ‘Mirror’ it has rubbish playlist support but is top 20 on ITunes!

She just doesn’t seem to hit it right with her own songs, maybe that’s partly the labels fault for making her produce records she doesn’t want to be doing so it comes across as less authentic.

I’m baffled, I love most of her stuff but there’s no denying something is missing with the general public.

What? don't mix iTunes and Spotify, it takes 10 sales to go top 100 on iTunes, some artists do, some don't, depends on the genre, so don't read too much into that. But being able to go top 100 on iTunes has nothing to do with Spotify.

The new song only had support on Spotify during the first day, she was on NMF but the effect lasts 1 day. She has had ZERO support that matters since then, of course it has done nothing. What labels can do? Send a check and have the song added to HH. How do you think HH works? Songs are not added magically... labels pay or have deals to have songs by their artists added...

I'm so proud of her, it really can't have been an easy thing to do and was obviously weighing on her mental health.
This is really sad to read but unfortunately this kind of thing is super common in the music industry - I guess I do in a way understand where the labels are coming from but it does seem pretty cruel to just completely stonewall artists from even releasing an album. Hope that she finds a way to get out of her deal.

Exactly my point even on release Raye can’t get downloads on iTunes even after she begged her fans to download and support it, which tells me after 7 years her fanbase is pretty limited.

If you honestly believe HH / THH is purely run by labels paying to be on there you’re so mistaken!

I love Raye but like I’ve said a label isn’t going to push an album while she’s flopping hard! They are still trying she gets promo slots she was on Sunday Brunch, the video has a budget....

I feel so incredibly sorry for her, just imagine the pressure that has been put on her! It reminds me a lot of Lisa Scott-Lee back in 2005, sure everyone made fun of her, but still. These "go top 10 or will drop you, or this has to be a success otherwise we don't release an album" is just cruel. I feel some people on this topic also don't understand there is a human being behind this. It's not just a popstar, it's a human being with feelings and emotions. I cannot imagine having a contract for 7(!!) years and being threated this way. Also, I feel the label messed her up with forcing her to change genres, turn to dance music etc. Maybe it would be for the better if she gets dropped and she can make the music she wants again?

Definitely! Ok it's business, but there is a person there. It's the same as say Amazon being soulless awful employers really, they're using this human being who has hopes and dreams to just churn out identikit dance hits with the vague promise of just maaaaaybe getting what she wants at some point but only if they make enough money off of her. And I doubt it will be what she wants, her album won't be what she wants to make, it'll be a load of generic dance-pop stuff with no identity.

No wonder she isn't really catching on, to the average listener there is no identity because they have made her swap and just churn out average flash in the pan dance songs that do ok but have no lasting impact. She is so much better than those and actually the likes of Cigarette and Love Me Again did pretty well even though they didn't make top 40. Plus while this was 4 years ago now, she did do well with Decline. She probably would have done ok had they kept her on that route.

But bottom line, it is just really sad this young woman is being pressurised and used in this way.

She has just okayed some songs that she feels passionate about / loves on Insta Live and they sound 10000x better than the material she has been putting out. Ugh.
